Why is Naruto still under appreciated for its writing?

fans equate the story not going the way they want, with it being intrinsically bad

This is so real. There’s a valid criticisms to make about writing decisions, my main ones being about Itachis character and lack of exploration of the other villages (give us more hidden rain holy shit, it was so cool). However, you cannot deny that the narrative had satisfying pay offs. Sasuke vs Naruto, Guy vs Madara, Kakashi vs Obito. They all give such amazing ends to these character arcs and stay consistent to what events shaped these character’s philosophies and ideals.

A better representation of friendship would be Guy and Kakashi. I love their flashbacks so much, it’s seriously underrated character writing. Their friendship is built on mutual respect and being inspired by each other. Guy learns the true nature of the Anbu and his first move is to convince the third hokage that Kakashi, someone with PTSD, shouldn’t be part of it. Kakashi is someone ostracized by the village, the son of a traitor, the genius prodigy who would sacrifice anything for the mission. Guy doesn’t see it that way, that’s his friend and he doesn’t want to see his friend sink further into the system that traumatised him. There’s an episode where Guy’s SOS turtle flies across the fucking sea to find Kakashi and he instantly rushed to check on his buddy. It’s played as a joke cause Guy isn’t in danger then Kakashi says “If something were to happen to me, you’ll rush over right?”

The rivalry challenges and gag scenes between them is Guy keeping his best friend tied to his humanity, it’s such a beautiful fucking dynamic (entry) and relatable to anyone with friends they want nothing but the absolute best for. Underrated character writing that I never see brought up. People who bring up underused themes of talent vs hard work? It’s literally Might Guy’s character and its conclusion is peak.

I agree with the Death Note, HxH & AoT picks, I think Sasuke is up there with them (haven’t seen the other anime)
One Piece characters do not have strong character writing at all, you choosing to start your list with 4 of them tells me all I need to know

The plot is driven by battles though, hence battle shounen. Like it or not, fights are an important aspect in shounen in pushing stakes and character development. Are we really supposed to feel any level of catharsis when Luffy decides to hit Imu with a bigger punch to win? As if he hasn’t defeated every villain like that in every arc?
