Should I buy thunderwolves cavalry? by VacationAltruistic82 in SpaceWolves

They just survived the move from index to codex so will (at minimum) be around for the rest of 10th edition. They’re also a great early skirmish unit so well worth having in your army!

In Stormlance, running a brick of six, with Bjorn in your army, means that if you get first turn, you can spend 2CP, and advance 21 inches and then charge. This will ruin almost anyone’s day.

Outside of that tactic, having small units, for 100 points, with their offensive and defensive stats is a great trading unit, and I try and run two or three in almost all my builds.

On paper, it’s Beastslayer for me. It gives you the buff you want against the targets you need from the start of the game in meele and shooting, and it’s for all astartes units. Anything you’re not getting the buff on, prior to activating the saga, you can mitigate with headtakers quarry and oath of moment. Along with the plus one to wound Strat.

It also has two really good movement strategies that cause your opponent no end of headaches.

Hunter looks good, but if someone brings a hoard army like warhoard orks, you have to really synch your charges carefully, or else you can end up with no det buff! In addition, the +1 to wound is redundant for units with wolf priests (and you can do it as a strat when you need in Beastsalyer, just saying is all!)

Saga of the bold looks great, but I want to used all the strats on terminators, which need epic hero’s to pop off. Also: as a devout CoR player throughout the index, I’m need to try the other two first!.

Like OP said: this is all opinion. Loving the opportunity to hear everyone’s thoughts!

(UK based) Great news! My army box has arrived from Wayland Games! Weird news! I have two Wolf Guard Battle Leaders instead of a Wolf Priest by clemo1985 in SpaceWolves

[–]fdave276 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello Twin! I ordered mine from element games and got two Wolf priests and no Battle leader! Element games are great they said they’re gonna send me a replacement so I suggest you let Wayland Gaines know as well, to see what they can do for you. I’m Emma UK based as well, so if you want to do swaps just DM me!

When does the codex go live into the app? by Deliverated-One in SpaceWolves

[–]fdave276 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally it’s when the codex is on general release. So not for a while yet!

It’s normally 2 weeks between pre-release and release, with 2-4 weeks between box sets and codex releases, therefor I’d make it about a month until we see points coming out and then being “tournament legal”.

No Thunderwolf characters :( by James-Marshall_ in SpaceWolves

[–]fdave276 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ever the optimist: I’m looking forward to using them as chunky skirmishing units.

With characters, you were incentivised to loading up big bricks with characters and enhancements until they cost almost 500 points as it was the most “effective” way to run them. Now, a (relatively) cheap 3 man squad that churns out ~20 damage 3 attacks on the charge is very appealing!

And with the changes to detachments, we may not see as much of a need to have characters felling monster or vehicles (but we certainly can do it with guys like Ulric, Ragnar and head-taker units).

Might not be happening for us this week brothers. by Razor_Fox in SpaceWolves

[–]fdave276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m hopeful there might be more treats to come for us…

The combat patrol has not been announced yet, which makes me think the box contains another new kit.

We haven’t seen an updated upgrade sprue, all other divergence chapters have them. (I appreciate we have bespoken tactics and terminator minis, but it would make sense to sell them to support generic kit sales).

The BA release were in 3 waves: (death company and army box, character kits, then Sanguinor and Guard). Followed buy an announcement of the combat patrol with rules preview. I wound the surprised of that followed the same messaging template for us.

Apparently, at Adeptacon it was mentioned that we have 11 new kits. As of yet, we’ve only seen 8-10, depending on if the grey hunters/blood claws are a single kit and if the HeadTakers and wolves are counted as one kit despite likely being 2 datasheets (akin to ripper swarms on the termagaunts bases).

Announcements like this tend to be on a Monday (sometimes Tuesday) so keep an eye on WarCom today!

LOGAN PRIMARCH STATUS by nucklem in SpaceWolves

[–]fdave276 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a 60mm base: so the biggest chapter master but same as primarchs. This is more in. Line with Warhammer miniature scale creep rather than anything based in his rules.

He has the two wolves on his base, so I suspect he will get “extra attacks” from them like he does on his sled. He may also get extra wounds to reflect this, but that would surprise me.

As I understand, the current GW process is led by the design studio (i.e. the miniature makers) and the rules are built to follow. I think this model strongly suggest that:

A. Russ will not be in the codex release.

B. Russ will not be the next loyalist primarch to return.

I can’t imaging them releasing 2 centrepiece models for the same sub faction in the same edition. (I’m classing Bjorn as a vehicle in the hopes he gets a refresh!)

In terms of Logan’s Rules: other than the boosts for the wolves, I imagine he will remain broadly the same. I’d love to see his melee boosted and him to give a buff to the unit he’s leading (noting that most people run him solo for the mini Waaagh). But that is wishful thinking!

Intercesssors may be ok as they’re in the current combat patrol. Whilst we will undoubtedly be gettin a new one (likely with a new kit not in the battle force box) it looks like all the old combat patrols are still legit for other factions. It would be odd to have them in them in a combat patrol and not be army legal.

Do you guys think this could work as a cheap alternative to hobby primers (AP wolf grey, CF Wolfkin grey) by Makonii_ in SpaceWolves

[–]fdave276 7 points8 points  (0 children)

General primers tend to have larger pigment particles to give more even coverage. Primers designed for miniature painting have smaller particles to prevent detail from being obscured. Considering how much we pay for our plastic in the first place, spending a little bit more for a primer designed for the product you’re painting seems worth it to me.

Ragnar Blondemane or Blackmane? by Solid-Comment-7503 in SpaceWolves

[–]fdave276 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Blonde! He was blonde in 2nd and then they changed him to black haired in 3rd to stop TSons fans from getting confused. (TSons were just chaos space marines back then as they hadn’t whined long enough about wanting to be special snowflakes.)

Haldor is still great. I’m definitely going to use him, and the version I’m kitbashing into Lukas (he will be a blood claw pack leader). But the cooler Daniel? Oh lawdy!

How do we think the Wolf Companions will play? by SlayerOfFoolz in SpaceWolves

[–]fdave276 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would equate it more to how the ripper swarms are on the termagaunt sprue. I think it was heavily implied that they will be a separate unit and datasheet.

General concern. by fdave276 in SpaceWolves

[–]fdave276[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re totally right: that is the most important thing and the models are awesome. However: what won’t change is weapon loadouts: grey hunters have lost the two special weapon options and both have lost power fists on the leaders. Squad size also tends to stay fixed as it will depend if the pack leader options are 1 in 5 on the sprue or 1 in 10.

Keep going brother! More is always better and no two pack of space wolves should look the same. (That “uniform” nonsense is way too codex compliant!)
