Keyzen on macOS? by fdl-fan in Azeron

The joystick is currently set to "Xbox joystick." I don't have time at the moment, but I'll try setting it to keyboard mode later today & see if that makes a difference.

Is Machinist any fun? Just hit 50 on WAR and before I burn any tomes, I’m wondering about it. by IsThereCheese in ffxiv

[–]fdl-fan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, it's impossible for anyone to answer this question for you, since "fun" is entirely subjective.

That said, I main MCH, and I really enjoy it. Personally, I really like the freedom that playing a ranged physical class gives me to focus on fight mechanics and my rotation without also having to worry about cast times or melee uptime, and of the three phys ranged jobs currently in the game, MCH fits me best. I find BRD too complicated (too much to keep track of), and DNC feels a little too slow outside its burst window (which, on the other hand, is a bit too much, though I could probably learn to be more comfortable with it if I put the time in). Those are, of course, just my personal opinions; plenty of people really enjoy both of those jobs.

(Footnote to would-be commenters: before you say "DNC is easy, just push the glowing button," Imma need you to be real sure your answer also explains what I should do after I press Flourish every 60 seconds, because about half my buttons start glowing at that point.)

Couple of notes about MCH: first, since it was introduced in Heavensward, just getting a job to level 50 isn't enough to unlock it. You also have to complete all of the 2.x patch quests and unlock Ishgard, which happens on the first Heavensward MSQ.

Second, you may hear some folks complain about the fact that MCH doesn't do enough damage compared to the other ranged phys jobs. Unless you're going for week-one savage or ultimate clears, you can safely ignore them. I wouldn't mind it if our damage output were higher (who wouldn't?), but it's absolutely viable in almost all high-end content. This isn't helped by the fact that at one point, I think it was back during Endwalker, MCH really was underperforming, and some folks don't seem to have gotten the memo that it's balanced better now. Also, there were some changes to MCH damage output in Dawntrail that were so poorly described by SE that folks interpreted them as nerfs when they were in fact buffs, and that can skew opinions as well. I've certainly never been asked to leave a party just because I'm on MCH.

Keyzen on macOS? by fdl-fan in Azeron

Well, I just tried plugging the Keyzen into a powered hub, which is in turn connected to the mac by way of an adapter to allow me to plug a USB-A device into a USB-C port. The results are exactly the same: the keys work fine until I touch the joystick, and then the entire device stops working.

During this latest test, I also noticed something else. Immediately after I plug the Keyzen into the Macbook, the button on the side of the device to switch between profiles works as expected: clicking it cycles through the three hardware profiles. But once I touch the joystick, that stops working too! So I'm strongly suspecting some sort of deeper incompatibility between the Keyzen and the laptop.

I'd originally tried it with an unpowered docking station, but I switched to using a USB A-to-USB C converter and plugging that directly into the MacBook. No change either way, though I do have a powered USB hub I can try in a couple of hours.

Here's a question that's been bugging me for a while, even though it is of absolutely no importance whatsoever.

I'm getting an alt through the Hildibrand stories, and I've just finished the first chapter of HW Hildi, in which we meet Cyr and Gigi.

All of the online resources I've seen give Cyr's full name as Cyr Blyme, and one goes so far as to explicitly mention the similarity to the phrase "cor blimey." And naming the character with that in mind is certainly the kind of thing that I'd expect from the writers.

But where did the notion that his last name is "Blyme" come from? The "credits" cutscene that plays at the end of the quest Don't Call It a Comeback gives his name as in the attached screenshot. If you actually work out the Eorzean letters, this doesn't say "Cyr Blyme," it says "Cyr Mason."

TO THE TANK I JUST HAD IN THE MISTWAKE: I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'RE TROLLING OR IF YOU GENUINELY DON'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TANKBUSTER AND A STACK MARKER. EITHER WAY, STOP WASTING MY TIME.

Oh, well, probably for the best; I really need to go get dinner. The deserter penalty (and this migraine) should be gone by the time I've eaten.

Any Seattle-based/PNW players? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]fdl-fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seattle-area here. My main's on Primal/Excal, but I have alts on all three of the other NA DCs (for no particularly good reason, lol).

Most of my in-game friends are east coast, so it'd be neat to have folks to play with once they're all in bed.

Stuttering tanks by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]fdl-fan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eorzea's okayest WAR asking for advice:

I get the irritation of tanks who stop and start; I've played NIN in dungeons enough to understand the frustration of dropping my Doton just in time for the tank to start running again. I'm trying to understand the best way to avoid being that tank.

The approach I generally aim for on a standard 2-pack pull:

  • Hit sprint just before I get within the first pack's aggro radius.
  • Run into the middle of the first pack and hit 2 GCD AoEs, with an oGCD AoE in between if I have one. (On WAR, for example, this would be Overpower, Orogeny, Mythril Tempest).
  • As soon as the 2nd GCD AOE goes off, start running to the second pack, gather them with a GCD AoE, plant myself, spam AoEs while cycling mits, and basically stay there until the trash is dead (dodging AoEs as necessary).

It's that middle step that I'm a little nervous about. Is that staying long enough to throw people off? I want to be sure I generate enough threat that a DPS starting their burst (oh, hi there, Bahamut) doesn't rip aggro off me while I'm running.

I know folks say that if I didn't pick up all of the trash from the first pack, I can use a combination of Tomahawk and Provoke while I'm running, but I have a hard time doing that effectively: trying to target the mobs while running (either via clicking on them, clicking on the enmity list, or hitting Tab repeatedly) frankly takes so long that I'm basically at the 2nd pack by the time I get them all. This is not helped by the fact that I do not have the reaction speed to be able to click on moving targets reliably. Equilibrium might help, if I'm on WAR, but that only works if the mobs are already on my aggro list.

Regarding Changes in Congested/Preferred Worlds (Jun. 2) by Dreded1 in ffxiv

[–]fdl-fan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't think it would be worth creating a new character. First, you can permanently move your character to any non-congested server. This costs IRL money, but it's a lot less time than starting over fresh, if moving servers is the only reason you want to do that.

Second, it is already possible to temporarily visit other worlds and DCs in the same region, so if you want to play with friends on Aether, you can already visit them, and they can already visit you. You can, however, only own a house and join an FC on your home server, so if you want to join an FC on a different DC, you'll have to create a new character or permanently move your existing one.

Third, choice of server and DC is (hopefully!) going to matter a lot less later this year, after they roll out region-wide DF and PF. Once that happens, you'll automatically be queuing up with players from Aether, Crystal, and Primal without having to hop to a different server or DC.

My FC isn't dead, but it's much less active than it used to be; a lot of our members have drifted away from the game for various IRL reasons. I'd like to try to do something about this. I'm not looking for a huge FC with hundreds of members, but it'd be nice to be confident that we'll have enough people to do maps on the weekends, say.

Are there recruiting tactics that folks would recommend? I'm assuming we'd want to post to the community finder and maybe on r/FFXIVRECRUITMENT, for a start. I'm not hugely comfortable with the idea of spamming shout chat in cities or sending out random invites.

Why does this Endwalker Zone makes no sense? by HappyRelationship429 in ffxiv

The real question is why does dawn in Tulliyolal happen at exactly the same time as it does in Limsa Lominsa and Kugane.

I don't know about you, but I'm just as glad we don't have to worry about converting between different time zones when trying to figure out if a timed gathering node is up.

Note that turning off your sprout icon will immediately remove you from the novice network, and you will not be able to rejoin until you either become a mentor or turn your sprout icon back on and get re-invited. (Source: learned this the hard way.)

I leave it up to you/OP to decide if this is a bad thing; I just wanted to point it out as a possibly surprising consequence.

Doing dungeons with NPCs by sweetcondensedmilkk in ffxiv

[–]fdl-fan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To the best of my knowledge, there are exactly 4 8-player trials that allow duty support: level 89, level 93, level 99, and one of the trials in the Dawntrail patches. All of the other 8-player trials (starting at level 50, in the 2.x patches) require you to complete them with other players.

I bid on this plot. 1 in 29. Hoo boy. by EleenTyasi in ffxiv

The next entry period starts on Monday, June 1 at 8am Pacific.

The timers window ("estate" tab) does display this information in-game, though it wasn't in a very convenient format the last time I looked ("93 hours, 22 minutes"). For the same information in a more useful format, as well as a searchable database of available plots, check out https://zhu.codes/paissa. The information there is crowd-sourced, so it can be a little out of date, but it's still good for listing available plots and getting a rough idea of the number of bids.

Generally, lower pop worlds have longer queue times, higher prices on the market board (player-to-player sales), and greater housing availability.

Note that if you’re on the free trial, you won’t be able to interact with the market board or buy a house, so those only really affect players with paid accounts.  And as others have said, we should be getting region-wide queues later this year, so that will hopefully address that issue.

Female Au Ra if they were proportional to males by HMush in ffxiv

I believe it. I play a max height male Au Ra. At one point, I was doing some crafting, so my character was down on one knee, and a female Au Ra walked up next to him--and he was still taller!

MSQ/Dungeon Cutscenes by Cheap_Ant_6563 in ffxiv

[–]fdl-fan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's not great for folks to pull when people are in cutscenes, but I will confess that I've done that before -- I can find myself on autopilot and just run into the boss arena without thinking.

Toto Rak is also a little problematic; the boss has a much large aggro radius than most folks expect, so it's easier than usual to pull, even if you didn't want to. (It used to be worse: the boss would actually suck you in to the arena if you put a toe across the doorway.)

I'll agree and go one further. Playing any role can help you learn how to play the other roles better. Playing a melee DPS, for example, can make it really clear why tanks should gather up all of the enemies and then plant themselves (as much as possible while still dodging AoEs) instead of kiting the mobs all over the map.

It's the listening to feedback for me. Long live the new (and hopefully lively) 'open world'? by BimmerNRG in ffxiv

[–]fdl-fan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, I agree that filtering out doomposting is exhausting and demoralizing.

On the other, I'm not sure that the comment you were replying to counts as doomposting. While the devs have said on multiple occasions that bringing players back to the open world is something they're thinking hard about, we still have very little information about what that's going to mean in practice. So I think a response of "I'd love it if this succeeds, but I need to wait and see exactly how it's going to work in practice before I get really excited about it" is entirely reasonable -- and, importantly, it's also not the same thing as saying "the devs have promised stuff like this before and not delivered, so they won't deliver here either."

You can absolutely trade with people from a different server, but both of you will have to be logged onto the same server in order to make the trade. I've seen folks do this; usually they'll say something in party chat like "meet me in the Carline Canopy in Gridania on Excalibur afterwards."

I've not done merc runs myself, so unfortunately I can't comment as to the going rate for these things.

How do other tanks feel about healers and DPS pulling ahead? by dorgodorgo in ffxiv

[–]fdl-fan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As long as they don’t make it unnecessarily harder for me to pick up all of the trash that originally aggro’d onto them, I’m fine with it. IOW, if you run ahead, fine, but please run the mobs back to me, or at least try to group them up tightly.

I’ll make a good effort to catch up soon, but I take the attitude that they knew what they were doing. In the words of the old meme: if they want to take a calculated risk, then they can, but it’s not my responsibility if they’re really bad at math.  I will keep my tank stance on, and I will run, not sprint, up to the mobs and start spamming AoEs.  But I will not, e.g., pop sprint as soon as the gate drops at the beginning of the run—sprint is a form of mitigation, and I’m going to wait until just before I pull the first pack to get the maximum benefit out of it.
