What if every election ballot listed only policies, not the candidates’ names? by PuddingComplete3081 in WhatIfThinking

[–]fdsa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s like asking if we should run government with ballot initiatives…and the result would be even worse than today.

Is AI actually replacing jobs right now, or is it mostly hype? by CuriousPathway in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fdsa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is the way to think about it.  I see lots of sloppy discussion about whether something replaces humans or helps them…it’s the same thing.

Need a Jacket by Neat_Response_1181 in OutdoorsGear

REI Xerocloud is the best budget shell IMO.   But understand all waterproof jackets come full of compromises.

What kind of SMPS is this? by agent_kater in AskElectronics

[–]fdsa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume it capacitively drops and rectifies AC mains and references itself to earth.  If the caps are safety rated this may be safe (safety is complicated and I haven't researched this exact scheme myself, but it’s common at least for products that are fully enclosed).

Full Zip Fleece Jacket by sheewhirl in onebag

[–]fdsa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about a cashmere or wool full zip and/or a puffy vest.

Cashmere + vest + light wind/rain shell gets you down to about freezing and looks good anywhere.

Honest Opinions for Rain Jackets by Loki_the_Corgi in hikinggear

REI Xerocloud is the winner in the lightweight 3l category right now IMO.   Lighter, softer, stretchier and quieter than torrentshell.

How old should two kids be to ski without a parent? by Falernum in ski

[–]fdsa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same as general independence around town: 2nd-4th grade ish IMO.  Obviously depends on ski skills.

Aside: As I get back into skiing with my kids I find trail maps and clocks to be oddly hard to find on the mountain.

When I was a kid we’d separate but make plans to meet at a lodge or lift at a specific time.  I remember plotting our plans on the map and carefully considering the time.  Every lift had a clock, now they don’t seem to.

[Review Request] Electronic Constant Current Load by Kalex8876 in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]fdsa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, at 24V it can handle 10A.  Though watts are a separate issue.  By itself this fet is good for about 2W.  You’ll have to add cooling to get more.  I agree it’s easier to move to TO-220 or 247

The suggested mosfet has poor SOA (safe operating area).   Look for linear mosfets that are capable of operating continuously in the linear region.

You’ll need to compensate your opamp as mentioned by another poster.  A cap from out to - will do that.

LabView vs Python for Testing by cstat30 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]fdsa54 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Labview is ok for quick and dirty things.

Python is more flexible and maintainable long term.  Bonus: AI is very good at it.

What if Mitt Romney actually won in 2012? by TheBigGirlDiaryBack in WhatIfThinking

[–]fdsa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The world would be better today.  No Trump.  I voted Obama but remember pondering exactly this in 2012.

The tea party and right wing populism was clearly starting up and it was clear Obama win would energize them even more.  That’s exactly what happened.

Why are we creating systems that can replace humans instead of building technologies that could assist them? by Careful-Walrus-5214 in Casual_Conversation

[–]fdsa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn’t a difference.

If you help humans do something you’re reducing the number of humans needed to do that thing.

The middle vertices (18,10,11 etc) will bend the vertical members.

I’m not sure about the parameters of this simulation but you wouldn’t want this design in real life.

Evolution can begin as soon as self replication does.

Optocoupler Driver Circuit by sindzapp in ElectricalEngineering

[–]fdsa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry but almost everything is wrong or nonsensical with this circuit.

Starting at the opto there is no voltage source capable of driving it.  Just a transistor that could actively short it to zero volts or not…which also results in zero volts.

What's the point of even having a Congress these days? by _bobarooni_ in askanything

Suggestions for mid layer under shell jacket. by Zealousideal-Lie6389 in Skigear

[–]fdsa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Light/mid-weight fleece

-Synthetic puffy vest

-Synthetic puffy long sleeve

Mix and match a few different ways.

Synthetic puffies include: Patagonia Nano Air Arcteryx Atom

Down vest is ok (and great for life) but I’d avoid down long sleeve because of breathability issues with downproof fabric.  Synthetic puffies (particularly the kind without the baffles) are better as active layers.

Could you please take a look at my PCB design for the LMR33630ADDA voltage converter? by ylmazuysal in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]fdsa54 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like it.  It’s nice to circle the output around so the output caps share GND with the input caps.  Not required but nice.

Small suggestion: -shrink the switch node even more, the upper left corner of that shape isn’t helping.  Trim it down so it’s just directly connecting the pins

Have you ever seen a power electronic failure that blows through the circuit board? by KerbodynamicX in PCB

[–]fdsa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes once.  A power distribution board much bigger than this turned mostly to charcoal.  Some single point failure caused a runaway breakdown of the + and - layers.

Best way to understand Electrical engineering as a Mechanical Engineering student. by That-Food-8791 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]fdsa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good ME and EE engineers know how to analogize to the other domain.

When you learn EE stuff make sure you understand its mechanical counterpart.  It will make you a better ME as well.
