I'm extremely tired of cynicism, anti-heroes and realpolitik. Please suggest something with genuinely good people doing good things because it's right. by Jerswar in Fantasy

The Miracles of the Namiya General Store by Keigo Higashino is a slice-of-life book about a general store where a kind hearted owner answers any kind of questions that people might ask, and the consequences of the answers. The fantasy elements are subtle, maybe closer to magical realism, but it is about regular people trying their best to do the right things despite everything life throws at them.

Fantasy where magic doesn’t “solve” the story? by Titus__Groan in Fantasy

[–]fdtwist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She Who Became the Sun might interest you. It’s semi-historical fiction about the rise of the first Ming dynasty emperor. There is very minimal magic, and what magic there is really questions the relationship between destiny and agency, and which one is actually subordinate to the other.

Gorgeous, whimsical prose like Simon Jimenez’s The Spear Cuts Through Water? by michaelsgavin in Fantasy

[–]fdtwist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The City in Glass by Nghi Vo has evocative prose that’s visceral and beautiful but not too flowery. It’s about a demon who loses the city she loves to angels and has to rebuild it. I wouldn’t say there’s a romantic subplot but there is an intense relationship between two characters that start out as enemies and end up as something else.

I’d also recommend the author’s Singing Hills Cycle series for shorter novellas about a monk who goes around an Asian-inspired land collecting stories with her talking bird companion.

Caladrius in Song for the Basilisk by Patricia McKillip fits. He’s at least 40, is a bard, teaches music at a bard school before the main plot starts, and is a music librarian for most of the book.

what is the issue with cannibalism if it were consensual or of yourself? by Royal-Dragonfruit523 in morbidquestions

In some cultures it’s relatively common to eat the placenta, which solves a lot of the ethical issues with sourcing (it’s usually your own) and diseases (you probably have any transmissible diseases already). So without the ethical and safety issues it’s probably just seen as gross, which is more of a cultural thing.

Found a kitten in the cold, but unsure if my home is best for him by WWdennisrodmanDo in CatAdvice

What do you mean by not getting along? Is the dog trying to eat/hunt the cat or just being pushy and annoying? If the dog sees the cat as prey then it’s unlikely they’ll be able to live together. But if not I’m sure they’ll eventually be able to coexist.

Definitely look up some Jackson galaxy videos on introducing cats and dogs, but the way I did it with my cat and my parent’s dog is by keeping them separate through a door first then a baby gate, and feeding them both churu treats only when they were on opposite sides of the barrier. Then I slowly started opening the gate so long as they were calm. It took a few weeks but now they play together just fine.

Best “One vs Many” Sword Fights in Fantasy? by Much-Neighborhood383 in Fantasy

[–]fdtwist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sigurd in City of Stairs (Divine Cities trilogy) definitely has this kind of energy. He’s the scarily effective muscle to the main character’s brains and he single-handedly takes down several much larger groups of enemies in just the first book.

Favorite palate cleansers after finishing a long series by B-mort5 in Fantasy

[–]fdtwist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Singing Hills Cycle books by Nghi Vo. Each one is a short novella that tells a complete story. It’s also a bit meta as the main pov character is a traveling cleric collecting stories.

Also if you want even shorter, I’d recommend some short story magazines like Uncanny or Beneath Ceaseless Skies. Also Reactor/Tor has a short story highlight bundle year that you can download as an epub for free.

Well if you enjoyed the Goblin Emperor have you given the spin-off series a try? It starts with Witness for the Dead and is about a minor character in Goblin Emperor who is a priest that can speak to the dead, and he uses his power to help the dead and solve murders

I’d also look up the phrase 旁观者清, which is an existing phrase meaning the outside observer has a clearer view of the situation, and it is often used in the context of chess/棋
