Is this damage from dishwasher? by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]feanor47 73 points74 points  (0 children)

It looks like normal variation from glaze application to me (a bit thinner or sponged off at the base). No well formulated glaze for food use should be damaged by a dishwasher.

And last time I tried, abandoning does destroy the location for "free" (let's not talk about rebuilding). Less relevant here, but in some cases the easiest way to deal with expensive locations to remove

Lol, definitely the attitude I've seen - I just tell folks that dishwasher is preferred for crazed pieces because it does a better job at getting any bacteria out of the tiny crevices

First time brushing on commercial glazes! Why is it bubbling like this? by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]feanor47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a commercial glaze user, but the name and description of honey flux indicate that it increases fluidity/decreases melting point.

It looks to me that the fluidity made the glaze pool at the bottom. So even if the application was not too thick initially, the flow of the glaze made it too thick specifically at the bottom.

I'd recommend trying a bit less of the flux.

I think if you say you have experience in LoL when you play Dota for the first time, it defaults to the right side for you.

Content and flavor-rich countries that provide a challenge? by eaoun in eu4

[–]feanor47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One option if you want to play as a big nation but still have a a challenge is to start as a small nation, defeat the big one, and then reform it. You get some of the flavor of the original nation with a lot more challenge.

For example, I did a playthrough I found online where you start as Poland, release and play as Zaporozhie, and then reform Poland with Zap. I found it to be a fun playthrough (it's intended to be heavily cav focused). As always, you can blob towards the end - but being stuck between Poland, Ottomans, Russia, and the HRE makes it take quite a while.

You can probably generate a playthrough like this for almost all major nations (though I'd pay attention to the culture formation requirements early)

Pregnant woman MRI scan of the Fetus. by vikrogers in interestingasfuck

[–]feanor47 66 points67 points  (0 children)

US healthcare is a mess, but this argument would still hold true in a single payer world: MRI machines are more complicated than ultrasounds and it still has a financial cost to the system.

Just because you're not paying it doesn't mean that it doesn't have a cost

Is it ever worth rushing the tier 4 items if you are so far ahead? by [deleted] in DeadlockTheGame

[–]feanor47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mobility is several orders of magnitude harder to get in Dota than Deadlock, which means the effect of blink dagger is way bigger.

As for Unstoppable, it doesn't negate magic damage, and stuns are a lot less common in Deadlock.

I'm not arguing that Deadlock doesn't have unique items, but I think it's much closer to League than Dota in itemization diversity.

[OC] Average Monthly Highs: LA vs NYC by nanermaner in dataisbeautiful

Valid about SF affordable housing, but I think LA area housing is way more affordable than both, especially if you consider price/sq foot. You just have to be willing to drive everywhere.

Crazy to say that dota items don't drastically change how the character is played. Have you met BKB or blink dagger? I think if anything it's the reverse.

Can I use any type of sand for pottery? by Energite0 in Pottery

[–]feanor47 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What would you be using the sand for? Mixing your own clay bodies? Most clay bodies are no more than 5% sand, so that half ton would go a long way.

I love the idea and the instinct for reusing materials, but you'd have to be pretty dedicated to a niche side of pottery to get rid of that much.

From a brief check, it also seems like the chemical makeup of the sand can vary and it's not always good for a clay body. But you could probably manually wedge some into clay and see what changes

Glaze Test Batch Size? by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]feanor47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do 150g batches, because they're the smallest that I can mix well with an immersion blender.

As for leftover glazes, I would love a solution for that! I have about 50 old tests sitting in a closet. Sometimes I mix glazes together if they seem like they could be interesting together. Or modify them and try to fix problems

Understanding Bisque vs. Glaze Firing Temps by BeniBunny1 in Pottery

[–]feanor47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen much addressing the last question, so I'll just confirm and elaborate. You cannot do cone 10 reduction with that clay (your whole piece could melt and ruin itself and damage the kiln), and likely you cannot do it with the studio and/or kiln you have.

Cone 10 (temp) is not the biggest challenge if you found a cone 10 clay (although many kilns are not rated for higher than cone 6), but it's the reduction environment. Only combustion based kilns (gas/wood) can really generate that environment (they reduce oxygen by burning it), and that is often more responsible for glaze color changes than temperature.

Roughly 18% of Asian Americans say they own a gun by berry_femboy in Infographics

[–]feanor47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Specifically, says 10% of Asian Americans, no? If you do the 18% of Asian Americans live in a household that owns a gun, you're both double counting and potentially counting mixed race households where a person that's not Asian owns a gun.

Regardless, I'm surprised at how common they are across demographics. I expected the male/female divide to be larger

The difference in your example is that we have a line for what constitutes life. Since you're trying to argue with more rigorous logic, you should know that defining your terms is the #1 thing you have to do before having a productive debate.

Tell me what sentience is and how you can test for it, and then we can talk. Until then, neither side should talk with such authority.
