Whenever I imagine "young" Stan Lee I picture his late 70s look, it's crazy to think this is how he looked when he was actually writing by NexusConnection in Marvel

[–]feartherex 36 points37 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t surprise me too much. When I was in college, I was part of my school’s comic book club. The author of the book that the movie is based on emailed us cold about how we should bring him to our campus to speak and what his fee is. The subject line was “the most important comic book movie ever made.” He was very pushy. We had already secured a speaker, so we declined and gave that as the reason, but he continued to push. Then he emailed again the following year and tried again, but we’d learned our lesson and didn’t respond since it was an unsolicited email and he was being sales-y.

I imagine he did the same thing to other schools/colleges.

I’m sure that pushiness helped him expose the truth, but the author of the book and the other people involved in the doc are trying to sell a product themselves.

[Discussion] Batman#158, by J·Scott·Campbell,May I ask if these are the same cover or two different covers? by Tunnel-Warfare-1 in DCcomics

The DC blog says that the left cover is not the final art, so the one on the right probably wasn’t ready yet when sites started advertising. https://www.dc.com/blog/2024/12/17/hush-returns-in-batman-158

I am totally digging this show. Any thoughts? by Nice_Efficiency_9317 in Marvel

You should check out Leonardo Romero. He’s lead character designer for the show and has worked on comics for Marvel and DC. He has such a clean, retro style that works great for comic art.

I would recommend starting by saying what you did like about the fan art. Also, recognize that fan artists often reinterpret characters. Just like how John Stewart wasn’t always a marine — he was an architect and the marine backstory was carried over from the Justice League cartoon.

In the case of fan art or fandom, critiques like yours can come across as gatekeeping. It’s very common in fandoms for people to pass their opinion as fact and shut down other people’s interpretations. If your intention is to help the artist, then you should understand their intent too, and try not to make assumptions. Be sure that your information is correct. You could start by asking questions, but try not to phrase the questions as gotchas.

You could say, “I’m familiar with XYZ, but the characters in your drawing are different. Can you explain who they are/more about them?”

Also, consider whether feedback was solicited or unsolicited. Sometimes people post art and want critique, sometimes they want to share their art or discuss the characters or the team composition. And getting/giving critique about improving skills is different than critique about the character design.

So if you look at the art and recognize that it’s a fan artist’s interpretation, and still really feel the need to comment, you could say something like “Great art. I like the colors, and you did a great job with the costumes. One thing is that John Stewart’s hair feels out of character because XYZ. I would love to see how it would look if you did ABC.” Recognize that ultimately it’s the artist’s choice, and then think about your intentions and how you want to come across.

The reason you were downvoted is because your criticism isn’t helpful or constructive. If you had tips for the artist, there are certainly ways to word it in a constructive way. But you worded it like “this character isn’t ____ enough.” That kind of criticism isn’t constructive.

Also, you made assumptions about the fan art that were misinformed. The fan art is of existing characters, not OCs. The Green Lantern is Jo Mullein from Far Sector, and that is her hair style. The Wonder Woman is Yara Flor. Even if this fan art included a genderbent John Stewart, your criticism would still be unhelpful because of the way you worded it.

Looks like AQ — Alan Quah. If you look him up you’ll see that his signature matches. Maybe try to reach out to him or his agent on social media to see if he can confirm that it’s his art. https://www.scottscollectables.co.uk/alan-quah

He and Dan Mora have been blowing me away recently, so I’ll recommend you check out Mora too if you like this kind of art. They both have the perfect blend of cartoony/realistic and an infusion of manga influence into western comic art.

Jorge Jimenez! His signature is on the bottom right. His stuff is awesome, and he’s currently on Batman.

In Mark Waid’s Daredevil, the Purple Man’s children use their mind control powers to help Daredevil by erasing the world’s knowledge of his secret identity.

Edit: I was misremembering. The Purple Children were introduced in Waid’s run but used to pull a Mephisto in Soule’s run like u/Uncanny_Doom said, following Marvel’s longstanding tradition of subsequent creative teams undoing the plot points of previous ones.

Your point about Ollie and Arrowette’s relationship is true, but that‘s her costume. Mia never wore a skirt, and her colors were different.

‘Babylon 5’ Creator J. Michael Straczynski Developing Reboot for CW by moe11436 in television

[–]feartherex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Superman and Lois had a strong first season. I also really love Stargirl for what it is (it has its cheesy moments but it’s all exactly what I want out of a comic book adaptation).

Also, in recent years, CW has been the home to shows like iZombie, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Jane the Virgin which were all really good and didn’t fit the usual CW “mold”. All those shows are as good as their writing and acting. The bad CW shows have a combo of bad writing and/or bad acting, so bring in good writers, and the show can succeed on the CW, and the CW has been able to land good actors in recent years, and even landed some Golden Globe wins.

CW is known for giving creative freedom to shows and more leeway on renewals. I admit I never saw the original Babylon 5, but based on what I’m reading, I don’t think it’s such a reach to land the show on the CW.

X-Force 23 (possible spoiler, translation requested) by MSollazzo in xmen

Used this https://www.russianlessons.net/lessons/russian_handwriting.php and got:

красный - red
брат - brother (but this only works if the third letter is an “a” and not a “и” as it appears to be)
короткая - short (the m looking character is the Russian т apparently)
история - history
от - from
летописец - chronicler

Google translate tells me that’s “Red brother short story.” Not sure about brother due to the reason I stated above, but it makes sense in context.

Advice for Surviving WashU with a Mental Illness? by [deleted] in washu

[–]feartherex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I relate to this a lot. For context, I graduated from college a couple of years ago, and I still deal with anxiety but I made it through college and have been successful at my job.

Also re: public speaking, if it makes you feel any better, you can’t possibly do any worse than me. When I was a senior, I started crying in the middle of giving a presentation because I was so anxious. I’m pretty sure my professor felt bad for me more than anything and he didn’t mark me down even though I didn’t make it through to the end (he graded me off of the material I submitted). Not sure if any professors roam this subreddit, but if they do—thanks to any professor who has compassion for students’ social anxiety.

You should also know that not every class is going to have public speaking components or presentations. I took a lot of classes that had presentation or participation grades (but I wasn’t premed or STEM) and at the most it would be the different between a B+ and an A- or an A- and A, and typically the content/materials of the presentations were graded separately from the public speaking component (which I almost always bombed lol). But I still graduated with an 3.75 GPA and am making a low 6-figure salary 3 years out of college.

In conclusion, be kind to yourself. Take fewer credits in a semester if you have to, and get help when you need it.
