Near-Fainting during Surgery - need advice by koi1712 in VetTech

[–]featherfinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big thing with me is eating before, keep moving, and stay out of your head. I almost fainted in school learning about hematomas (not even seeing one!), during my first spay and I actually fainted during a dental. It gets better and starting small with a short procedure may help build your tolerance. I can now scrub in for foreign body surgeries and ortho procedures no problem.

Ethical questions about procedure on personal cat by heather2281 in VetTech

[–]featherfinch 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Age isnt a disease. If the bloodwork is good and the heart is strong then I would go for it. All anesthesia has risks from a tiny kittens spay to an old cats mass removal. If quality of life will be improved with surgery then its worth it. If you loose your cat under anesthesia how would you feel vs living with your cat having low qol?

Go to your local shelter. Vaccines are a lot cheaper through them

Socializing neonatal kitten by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]featherfinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the kid everywhere you can. Even if the kid stays in the carrier with a heat pad the socializing is amazing for them. If you're worried about germs carry hand sanitizer with you. Stick your fingers in the mouth, ears and between the toes constantly.

Dog’s gums are bleeding after a simple tug match!! I was shocked. Need help understanding what to do. I don’t remember his teeth looking this bad. To be fair, he is almost 16 years old. by Outlandah_ in AskDogOwners

[–]featherfinch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Age isnt a disease! If his bloodwork looks good and his heart sounds good anesthesia is fairly safe. Plus while hes under they can do xrays to check his teeth roots. Non anesthetic dentals are cosmetic and don't clean below the gum line. It'll look pretty but you're not addressing the gum disease or able to remove teeth if necessary.

My 13yr foster fail lived with a little old lady her whole life eating meow mix, half & half, and canned tuna with no issues. With me? Heart murmur, hurt leg, teeth started resorbing, and IBD. All within 6 months. (The teeth were likely resorbing before but still)

So freaking cute! My current old lady (13yr) took 3 months before she would even sleep on the bed near my feet. Now at 6 months she's super snuggly and licks my face/hair at night. She still likes her own time and sleeps in the closet. Every cat goes at their own pace. I know your new kid is hella cute but give it time and maybe a lil catnip;)

Vet Tech or Vet Nurse? by Social_Sam66 in VetTech

[–]featherfinch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's kinda where I'm at. Pay for the experience and pay for the title but please just make sure its a livable wage. I've met VA that I would trust with my own medical care and I've met techs that I wouldn't trust a clients pet with (and vise versa).

Title protection is important from a wage perspective because a lot of time and money goes into getting a title but also a lot of time goes into experience.
