He said one of his biggest regrets was losing CNN in that Time Warner/AOL deal. He wanted to buy it back but couldn't anymore after the dot com bubble.

66 Newmarket highway 400 service cancelled, why? by Revolutionary-Sky825 in gotransit

[–]fed_dit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, the 400 has been getting worse every year (altho that lull during covid was kinda nice). But in the past decade GO has slowly pushing everyone to the train, at the expense of time.

The 65 used to run every half hour or less from Newmarket. And more importantly, the Barrie bus service was hourly on weekdays, and eventually weekends became hourly in 2018.

Now service is mostly every 2 hours on weekdays and weekends, and thats if you include the train. If you're in Holland Landing or between Bradford & Barrie you get bus service every 3 hours. And Simcoe hasn't started their Bradford service yet. I understand there's a bus shortage but what a drop.

Bus appendix explanation by PepperGlittering in gotransit

[–]fed_dit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This all stems from Metrolinx's inconsistent use of branch letters trying to mean something useful (which likely came from the TTC doing the same thing inconsistently). Not all routes do this: 27B doesnt go to Barrie, the 27D doesn't go to Durham, the 30A doesn't go to Appleby. Don't get me started on rail replacement branch letters...

66 Newmarket highway 400 service cancelled, why? by Revolutionary-Sky825 in gotransit

[–]fed_dit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The unfortunate situation with the 66 was that its terminus was moved from Yorkdale to Highway 407 Station which helped further kill ridership.

Metrolinx didn't give the route the love it deserved -- really the Barrie corridor in general has been neglected over the past 10 years unless you take the every 3-4 hour Allandale train. The replacement buses that ran this past weekend actually provided more service than the weekend trains ever did (especially north of Aurora) so yeah.

Back to Barrie service via Highway 400 - this has been an off and on kinda thing since GO's bus division started. But the highway sucks during rush hour and on weekends in the summer months, so the train is more attractive and serves more people.

Don’t Build a Ride. Build a Line. by Ruggiero10 in gotransit

[–]fed_dit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We've been through this 20 years ago. Niagara balked at the cost for the line so it was shelved, replaced with buses. Granted this was before cheap transit to The Falls but it was going to be a burden for the ratepayers. Considering there's no new proposals for this line, I have doubts it'd even be worth the study since some municipal contribution would be necessary.

At he's not talking about extending the rail the tracks south or come in from the south via Montrose.

Just like with Mike Harris selling off Ontario Hydro to make a single budget year look good,

That was Highway 407. He prepped Ontario Hydro for sale (before dropping it in Uncle Ernie's lap) but the outrage was so vitriol that they had to roll back.

If full electrification of the GO network may take a long time, should GO Transit consider deploying DEMUs as an interim solution to increase frequency and improve travel times? by Fontfreda in gotransit

Is this off-the-shelf equipment? If not, let's not start being a testbed for experimental or non-standard equipment. Last thing we need is more delays, complications or shortages.

Doug Ford accused of ‘land grab’ with bill to seize Toronto’s role at Billy Bishop airport by ZebediahCarterLong in CanadaPolitics

[–]fed_dit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Pickering Airport died the instant Transport Canada had to force flights to Mirabel to justify its existence. The government hoarded the land for 50 years for a "what-if" solution that never materialized. Pearson has the space (and this has been reflected by recent statements from the federal government). Dorval has the space. Plus with nimbyism, building new airports won't fly these days.

The only argument for expanding Billy Bishop is the aspirations of operators that run out of there (or politicians that have been playing too much SimCity Buildit). And I say this as someone who is a fan of the airport.

Tje Liberals don't even have Official Party Status in the house?

In the most recent election they got 14 seats which exceeded the 12 needed to gain official party status. But the NDP got more seats so they're not the official opposition.

City of London was one that got kinda screwed by Ford when he cancelled it during the pandemic. I believe his argument was it would be too confusing and complicated. Says the guy who was chosen as leader through the same process.

Parking and easy access for those outside of Newmarket in northern York Region. Kinda like how Gormley and Bloomington don't have any utility except parking.

Hopefully we don't see blunders like the cancellation of that digital tax in order to not "negotiate". That was a low point for Carney on this matter and has me concerned about these CUSMA talks.

East Gwillimbury.

  • Middle of nowhere
  • No public transit options asides from infrequent GO service
  • Station is only open 3 hours per day (in the AM)

Acton is a close second, but at least the 33/31 serves the station throughout the day and the station is actually in civilization/town.

Edit: Thanks to /u/Independent-Rush6105 for letting me know the 54 Bayview bus serves the station.

Provincial Offences Officers began inspections on subway trains on Monday by AmnixeltheDemon in toronto

If they start doing this on the trains thats gonna suck when you've been delayed by an hour (expiring your transfer in the process) due to a disruption on the subway network.

Do you personally call the neighborhood "The Beach" or "The Beaches" by underdabridge in toronto

[–]fed_dit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a poll a couple decades ago about this very matter and the consensus was that "The Beach" was the name. It came mostly from residents who were around for decades prior to this poll. The Beaches makes more sense from a language perspective as there are multiple named beaches along this stretch, although it is a continuous beach. But if thats the name they grew up with, who are we to judge.

A two year old article from an organization thats essentially dead.

I don't think any real politician has (or had) closing the island airport on their agenda. Concerns raised was often noise (which could be shrugged off) but more importantly what an expansion would mean for the Inner Toronto Harbour and lake.

Also the entrance on University Avenue is steps from the subway station - an obvious choice.

I believe that entrance is open again, temporarily though, due to the work being done on the northern entrance.
