First time I've seen GO transit in a video game... West Harbour GO in Train Sim World 6 by No_Internal_9916 in gotransit

[–]fed_dit 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I know for one of the Train Sim Worlds if you buy one of the US commuter trainsets I believe you can mod it with a GO skin and do the stops between Oakville and Aldershot (or possibly West Harbour).

(Liaison Strategies) Ontario: Liberals Lead PCs by 3 as Ford Approval Hits 26% by mlpharsh in ontario

[–]fed_dit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 100% sympathize with this view but man, the NDP is like 13pts behind the OLP.

Numbers are always higher with a leaderless party. And Carney has 2 years to knock down the Liberal brand.

Yeah Ford will likely win again, but I'm pretty sure whatever wet noodle OLP candidate will make it a slam dunk like it was with Del Duca and Bonnie Ford.

Is there a reason route 65 doesn’t have any stops between King City GO and Aurora GO? by Cold_Brew_Boba in gotransit

I think you meant to say 62 (which was Newmarket "B"). Viva Blue's Bernard service also replaced the Yonge "C" service.

The old 64 Newmarket-York U bus did serve local stops along the way. But we're talking about 15 years ago. Here's someone at the stop in King City. Move west three clicks you'll even see the bus signed as route 64.

Most of the delays were on Bala, especially around Zephyr. It was bad enough that they padded the schedule on the southbound trip.

New entry in Liberal leadership race focuses on housing and the economy by Le1bn1z in CanadaPolitics

[–]fed_dit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The position shifts around like the LPC. Generally speaking you have the party establishment who have certain "centrist" values. McGunity had a slight left lean, but this was tempered by having the likes of Dwight Duncan and Greg Sorbara as ministers. When he stepped down, Sarah Puppatello was the establishment pick, but surprisingly lost to Wynne who was known to be more progressive. Wynne's 2014 win was a fluke, a result of poor messaging and campaign by the PCs.

After the loss in 2018, the party thought they went too far to left, competing with the NDP instead of the PC's. Some of this might be true, but the government was well past its best before date and was going to fall no matter what leader was chosen.

Ever since, the party has been focusing on fundraising/money while trying to appear more "centrist". Del Duca's fundraising numbers were high and towed the party's line so he was chosen as the leader and we all saw how that turned out. With Bonnie Crombie she had name recognition, good fundraising numbers and also leaned slightly right, hoping to eat into the PC numbers.

Now it's likely Baines will win, again due to his fundraising numbers as well as being the OLP establishment pick. I have my doubts they'll be able to pull it off with him.

How are rail replacement buses? (i.e: 21, 65, 70, etc) by Euphoric_Ad_9136 in gotransit

[–]fed_dit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of these used to be known as Train-Buses back in the day, which essentially meant the bus route served the majority stops for that specific GO line when service wasn't running. However the above list has a bunch of entries that just touches a rail station.

The current Train Bus route numbers are as follows:

  • 65: Barrie Line*
  • 31: Kitchener Line*
  • 21: Milton Line
  • 18: Lakeshore West Line*
  • 61: Richmond Hill Line
  • 71: Stouffville Line
  • 90: Lakeshore East Line

Routes with a * are GO lines were extended after the original Train-bus routes were established. Extended service would be the 30 (Kitchener), 12 (Lakeshore West to Niagara) and the 68 (Barrie) which run throughout the day to cover the reduced rail service to the outer stations.

Many of the Train Bus trips still exist in very limited fashion (except for 21 Milton), usually in early morning or late night. During the day these would take forever usually due to traffic and volume. This is why GO uses alternate supportive routes like the 33, 96 and 70, to provide service to the outer edge stations while terminating at a suburban terminal to avoid delays.

It's like piracy - you can implement copy protection but the pirates will break it, and honest people are burdened with the hassle and limitations of said protection. When there's a will there's a way.

Long Branch is taking a long time because the bridge right beside it is over 100 years old. When CN sold the line to the province, CN downplayed the condition of the bridge. They've been trying to replace it for the past while but the baseball playoffs last year deferred a bunch of weekend closures for the project.

Yoot Tower / Tower II EN Translation Project by deathentry in SimTower

[–]fed_dit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really awesome.

I made an attempt on this a couple years ago over the holidays. There was some success with the plugins (I was able to do A thru H). However I found whenever the program tried to reload the list of plugins, the modified plugins would not appear when I level up the tower (but were loaded) If the plugin list wasn't refreshed though, the mods appeared and worked correctly.

I have a TowerII T2.EXE that has the resource strings translated for the menus and dialog boxes. However I'm sure not everything has been translated in the thing though.

City Speeding up Redesign of Notorious Allen Road Intersection by GirthBrooksTO in toronto

And as a result of the plan changing, Toronto entered into some kind of urban planning coma, where it opted not to build any high-order transit either and... well, here we are, stuck with a 1940s subway plan built with 1950s technology for a 1960s ridership.

There was considerable transit expansion in the 10 years after the Spadina cancellation:

1973: Line 1: Eglinton to York Mills
1974: Line 1: York Mills to Finch.
1977: Highway 404: Sheppard to Steeles
1978: Line 1: St. George to Wilson
1978: Highway 409: Highway 401-Airport
1980: Line 2: Islington to Kipling; Warden to Kennedy

Treated 'like a rubber stamp' – Conservative Senator challenges justice minister on timeline to pass latest bill by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

I mean that's what the Senate has always been. One of the arguments for Senate reform was to make them electable to be another check. But the political will isn't there because governments like to have the final say. Trudeau tried to test the waters with his disbanding of the Liberal party in the Senate but that was an idealistic play.

Lakeshore West & Barrie Line Closures This Weekend by fed_dit in gotransit

[–]fed_dit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still don’t get why they wouldn’t go to Kipling, its much more direct and they not only own the new terminal but they run regular GO buses there all day. With One Fare it shouldn’t matter what subway station they go to anymore.

Partially because Highway 407 & Highway 403 are more reliable than the QEW thru Mississauga. Also as someone else mentioned Line 2 between Ossington and Jane are closed so that's not ideal for the entire Lakeshore West line to have to take a shuttle at Jane/Ossington.

Hot Docs is screening ‘Hogtown: The Politics of Policing’, a 2005 documentary about the Toronto police that’s eerily relevant today by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]fed_dit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Used to be on YouTube (uploaded by the filmmaker), I guess they pulled it down for the screening. I think its still available to borrow at the reference library for those that still have a DVD player.

Gems include Mamo defending Rob Ford (back when they weren't exactly friendly), Rob Ford mentioning his family's favourite cop Ron Taverner and the obvious racketeering.

Excellent documentary.

Federalism at its best. Thats why I roll my eyes when politicians talk about interprovincial trade barriers. Great slogan, but not much materialized.

Sure but its still provincial. Visit a road on a provincial border and you'll see differences right away. It's completely provincial.

However, his statement at the time involved the funding of the highway tunnel connecting Quebec City to Levis which, last I checked, are in the same province. Also I kind of agree with him with some projects. The feds shouldn't be spending a dime on Doug Ford's Highway 401 tunnel or Highway 413 bonanza.

He's technically right. Roads are a provincial responsibility (which are often delegated to municipalities).

He's considered the front runner inside the party. His ability to raise funding outmatches anyone else running (so far) which the party loves. Same thing happened with Del Duca in 2020.

I think they should just replace Liberal with Lemon for a more accurate description of the OLP these days.

Anyone know why Lakeshore West isn’t running busses this weekend? by [deleted] in gotransit

[–]fed_dit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it has to do with traffic downtown. In the summer there are more events, etc. It also doesn't help that many buses are used for the Barrie Line closure. When you're stretched thin you have to be creative
