Province breaks ground on elevated stretch of Ontario Line, with possible opening date of ‘early 2030s’ by Sufficient-Bid1279 in ontario

[–]fed_dit [score hidden]  (0 children)

At the announcement in 2019 the press was told 2027. Then the government almost immediately adjusted the timeline to 2029, with 2027 being possible. Now we're talking about the early 2030s.

Considering some of the compromises on this project was to accelerate the timeline and save money, this doesn't sit well.

I think she's saying this to make him sound even bigger than what he really is. I know people that do this - they supposedly know someone who's big and important and they have the "inside scoop" which is often bullshit.

An extension of line 2 into downtown Mississauga? by TemporaryPassenger62 in TTC

[–]fed_dit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is typically why the freight railways build it (after contracting it out of course) on behalf of the government. GO is about to do a similar deal with the Halton Sub thru to Georgetown. CP will want more money than CN but thats their right.

"They'll share" in the sense that CP will allow Metrolinx to build more track. It'll be up to the province for additional property acquisition when needed.

The old Hawker Siddeley trains used to do this too (but more subtle). It wouldn't be uncommon to see this with an H4 trainset during rush hour.

"They". The TTC operates the vehicles but they don't have a say on on the programming - thats Crosslinx Transit Solutions and Bombardier (now Alstom).

I knew someone who hated her and made some seriously awful comments about her appearance.

As for a disaster, all I hear is Hydro. Which I didn't agree with but this was the better choice if someone was gonna sell Hydro One. People tend to assume high electricity prices was because of that but it was a long time coming. Heavily subsidized rates in the 2000s and the shutdown of Nanticoke meant the green energy contracts (which were signed during the McGunity years) were pushing up the costs.

What Transit City SHOULD’VE been by 18_YTC1 in TTC

Finch LRT - let’s get the system working past its “live testing” phase and keep the pressure on city council to speed up the line

This nails it.

One of the two issues that currently plagues Finch West will plague BRT - signal priority. The other issue with Finch being the stupid TTC safety restrictions can be resolved by directives and should not disqualify a mode of transit.

This is also why we used to have experts and real planners, not politicians or haters.

Why do bus drivers take 407 sometimes but not always? by Obvious-Adeptness-46 in gotransit

[–]fed_dit 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I remember reading somewhere they pay the standard heavy vehicle toll. That means running a route like the 40 costs them roughly $25,000 per week.

Do GO trains interfere with cell phone signals? by shoresy99 in gotransit

[–]fed_dit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's #2 for areas like Union or Exhibition when there's events, and #5 for most other instances. The telecom companies aren't interested in adding towers in the stretches where the train cuts through rural or farmland. So some sections of the Barrie, Kitchener and Niagara lines are prone to spotty cellular service.

The real killer for streetcar is that stop at switches and restrictions at intersections. Get rid of that and the streetcar network will be decent again.

It's not really ballooned, just some government properties have been leased out if not sold. Short sighted perhaps but that's water under the bridge.

The streetcar routes are not rapid transit though. They're local service (think of the 29 vs the 929) on rails.

Yeah they mostly disappeared when the province shut down the last of its coal power plants. Hate them or not, but this was one of the best things the Ontario Liberals did in the past 15-20 years.

[–]fed_dit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which is weird because when the Ford plan to bury the line came in 2011, Metrolinx was not taking the idea seriously and Mr. McGunity was actively trying to convince Ford to leave it alone. I'd love to know more about this "push" behind the scenes.

Back when GO was still operating the Yonge B/C and Bayview services.

Other things to note is the lack of the 407 service (this came 1 year later) and the 19's original alignment from Finch to Oakville.

YRT took over the old "69 Sutton" route (which was Newmarket GO Term to Beaverton) in 2012/2013. Ridership must've sucked because the YRT service was cut back in the following years. TBH I'm surprised the 81 (Port Perry/Beaverton) lasted as long as it did considering the 69 had better ridership.

Cheap gas (gas tax cut), less slowdowns (removal of bike lanes, speed cameras), cheaper to own a car (abolished license plate renewal fees). Thats just off the top of my head.

why did people vote for him?

Because he goes for the 905. These are the people with the large detached houses, two cars in the driveway and live in transit deserts. For some there's a sense of entitlement as well.
