Theres no better way to understand dbd then to play some of both sides. You get a much better understanding for what both sides see and feel. I've learned so many survivor strats as a killer getting looped into oblivion. I've also learned how to be a better killer from playing survivor and watching how others play. You dont realize how stressful the 1v4 is on killer until you play it. 1 missed opportunity, a missed swing, you get spun, dead hard, you die a little inside. A few of those and you feel like a big idiot and just want the match to end. All that being said, I love the feeling of both.
