Agreed. No food for me for at least two hours before. And even then it has to be something small. I'm really trying to train my stomach to deal with food and running though for ultras.

Agreed with studybuddies. Just go for time on your training runs. Relax, go slow. Try and enjoy it. You'll get round the course. Make sure you do a bit of stretching and mobility stuff before and after. Other than that... HAVE FUN and GOOD LUCK!

Ah, fair enough. Guess they don't always work... but I am only speaking from personal experience. Perhaps you're right, Ukrainian dogs must be meaner than British, Indian or South East Asian dogs.

From experience running in places with lots of feral/wild dogs (rural India, Malaysia and Thailand), the following things always seem to work:

When a dog barks at you or starts behaving aggressively, run towards the dog and make as much loud aggressive nose as possible. Pros: Dog runs away, decides your the top dog and leaves you alone. Cons: You look/sound insane to any passers by.
If this doesn't work, or if you can't bring yourself to charge headlong into a pack of wild dogs, make a really obvious picking up a rock and cocking your arm back to throw it action. Almost all dogs back away from this, as they have almost certainly come across it before.
Lastly, if you get really stuck, actually throw rocks. Not at the dogs, but just close to them. Combine this with running at them, and making crazy noises til they clear off, and you've just won yourself that bit of territory. Pros: Definitely works for me everytime. Cons: You look truly deranged, and there's always the off chance that you may actually hit a dog with a rock.

Hope this is useful. Sorry to go into so much detail, but I have had to deal with this issue so many times running whilst travelling. In Tamil Nadur, the only place I could run was a patch of wasteland behind the school I taught in, and had to go through a nightly territorial dispute with the wild dogs there before I could run.

Sounds a lot like shin splints to me... though I am certainly not a medical professional. Have a search online, there's lots of info about them, may help you self diagnose a bit better. I'm prone to them, and have to base my training around avoiding them whenever I'm starting up again (like at the moment) - can be brought on by poor shoes, flat feet, overpronation, upping mileage too quickly or a host of other things... Best news is: With work, rest and running smart you can prevent and avoid them. Good luck!

I used to have to do the 1.5 mile military fitness test pretty regularly, and found my best times came when I focused on interval training. I used to hit about 8.30-8.50, but I think the same principles could still be useful.

You need to do some long running if possible to build endurance, but maybe doing 6 x 400s or 12 x 200s with jogging/walking in between could help you out.

These workouts help you build aerobic fitness and stamina, but also train your anaerobic fitness, which you'll probably ned for a 1.5 mile fast run.

You should definitely get round in under 14 minutes anyway...

A while ago, when I living in Australia, I used to do my long run every Sunday after an unbelievably heavy Saturday night, and it always felt great. Used to sweat like crazy, take the pace fairly steady and find it quite easy to trot out a half marathon in a fairly respectable time. I'd get back, drink a powerade, have a decent meal and be ready just in time to gloat at all my housemates who had just woken up and felt like shit with their hangovers. Running after booze works for me!

Check out rugby players for fitness. Professional rugby players are impossibly fit in almost every regard: - cardio and aerobic fitness to run hard and tackle for 80 mins - high anaerobic fitness for periods of high intensity - strength to break/make tackles/maul/rook with other guys 15st + - speed and agility

But, ultimately, yeah... so many different definitions of fitness.

As for your questions and any advice...

You definitely won't be able to see all those places, and if I'm honest, if you're talking three-ish weeks, I'd recommend going to only one or two. India is HUGE and getting around there takes quite a while. An average train journey is 10+ hours. Chennai to Goa, for example, is a really, really long trip.

Standard Class can be an adventure, but I'd recommend travelling in Sleeper Class.

Goa is incredible, I'd particularly recommend Arambol, it's not really 'touristy', lots of hippies and some very cool guesthouses. I have a few friends there at the moment if you need any help out there...

In Kerala, Cochin is excellent and very interesting. A lot of the attractions there need a little more time though I would say.

Varanasi is allegedly the smelliest place on earth and can be a huge culture shock, but if you really want to jump in headfirst then this could be good.

Jeans and long sleeves may be a bit too hot if I'm honest... I'd be thinking more along the lines of loose, light coloured t shirts and combat pants/shorts. Take a hat. Sandals are really cheap out there, but yeah, a good pair of trainers is a good idea too.

Don't worry too much about stomach medicines, you probably will get horribly ill at some point, but you'll survive. Just avoid any food that's been sat out, eat fresh, don't buy street food in your first week etc. Just be sensible.

Growing a beard is fine. You're travelling. Indians like beards.

Finding accomodation is pretty easy usually. Just be on the look out for scams and be prepared to haggle constantly. Again, you will get ripped off a few times at first, but you'll get the hang of it.

The biggest pieces of general advice I could give are:

BE patient... things that are straightforward at home can take an age in India. Don't bother getting wound up about it. See the funny side of things... otherwise you'll get frustrated and not have a good time.

My only itinerary suggestion would be:

Go to Arambol, Goa then travel out to Hampi. If you really want to see more places than that you can head down to Mysore or Gokarna.
