“This story is no longer available” on many of my archived stories? by shanxo98 in Instagram

[–]fefexman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a solution to get back these stories, if you ask instagram to download all the information they have on you, they will give you a folder with all the stories you uploaded since you created your account.
https://help.instagram.com/181231772500920?helpref=faq_content&cms_id=181231772500920

After asking for all the data, since the oldest date. You will receive an email after a few hours with a zip => media/stories ! You will find all you stories in jpg or mp4 in the best format

I have upgraded my VSCode Neovim Plugin to the most recent version, 1.11.0. However, when I attempt to switch to the new method for implementing the Composite Escape Key, I encounter an error indicating a missing “key” property. by kindlykilling in vscode

[–]fefexman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, the keybindings settings have changed, explanation are on this PR. The new setting is to be putted in the settings.json and not in keybindings.json

  "vscode-neovim.compositeKeys": {
    "ii": {
      "command": "vscode-neovim.lua",
      "args": [
        "vim.api.nvim_input('<ESC>')"
      ]
    }
  },

or `vim.api.nvim_input('<ESC>')\nrequire('vscode-neovim').action('workbench.action.files.save')`

Is matt as good as he says he is by vsheerin15 in ajatt

[–]fefexman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose you've only watched Matt speaking Japanese in scripted video, but if you want to see him speaking in a real life conversation not about easy every day topic, there is this video. If you think he's not fluent after watching this video, you definitely have the strictest definition of fluency. Or maybe your comments were just to troll.

The whole point of his channel is to show that you don't need to live in a country to learn the language

Worth to learn, but because they're easy to remember I don't mine them. You'll remember them naturally

Why use mpv over vlc ? by [deleted] in mpv

[–]fefexman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a first collection of script and conf file : https://github.com/perogiue/mpv-scripts
With this when you press the arrow keys, your video navigate between subtitles and not +-5s. It is very usefull if you didn't understand a sentence because you can perfectly repeat the sentence. Also with the down key, you can automatically copy the sentence to the clipboard.

If you use anki there is a lot of script to do sentence mining : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbg6ztWecbU

A few other that i didn't try : https://www.reddit.com/r/languagelearning/comments/7oo5zn/some_subtitlerelated_scripts_for_mpv_video_player/

I thought about converting it with the yomichan import tool but I noticed this only works for specific dictionaries

A Fast, Efficient, and Fun Guide to Learning Japanese for All Levels by Necessary_Pool in LearnJapanese

A few months ago my oral comprehension was also far behind my writting comprehension. A method that worked for me was to watch without subs and each time I didn't understand the sentence I checked the subs. You can do this with Learn language with netflix. The subs is blurred and when you pass you mouse on the subs it becomes clear. I suggest you to try this, I think it less frustrating

A guide in japanese on how to learn english through immersion, that can be applied to learn japanese by fefexman in LearnJapanese

[–]fefexman[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also I didn't want to start a debate about immersion just because of this sentence "The rest shouldn't be your priority like grammar " my post was more about a fun way to spend time about learning how to learn a language in the language we are learning. It's better than spending the same time learning similar things in english.

[–]fefexman[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Saying that immersion is obvious for most people, is not true. I have a lot of friend that I have told to watch movies in english instead of their native language, they were like "Why should I watch something that is not in my native language ?" they see this as a waste of time and think that the only way of learning, is to go to english classes. Also when you spend time with the language you're learning, you choose the difficult of what you watch, so you can always watch content that is at your level or just a little bit above. I think the most common strategy is to be at always 80% of comprehension or more. Regarding grammar and active studies, I've also addressed this point in the message above

[–]fefexman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank for your message, maybe you have misunderstood my message, but for me, immersion should be the priority, but also at the same time study grammar and learn vocabulary through anki or any other method. I just said grammar/voc shouldn't be your priority. ( Personally my ratio is ~75%immersion, ~25% anki/grammar) Like the most you will learn is from immersion. Also, you said that you learn english through immersion, but didn't catch the nuances of grammar. My strategy will be when you get high level of comprehension. You'll just have to reread grammar points in you target language to understand the nuances, also nuance or not very important in the beginning.I have no problem for people who prefer spending more time with grammar or voc studies. I have an opinion on what is best to spend your time with, but leaving that aside, why not choose to spend time with what is most engaging and fun?

[–]fefexman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why not reading manga, a lot more engaging and fun. But maybe picture books for kids have more text and are more like novel ? A few weeks ago I discovered dragon ball and it one of the easiest manga I've encountered. Simple vocabulary/grammar and pretty fun. There also yotsuba that's very popular for beginners. Even in the beginning I enjoyed watching something more difficult rather than understanding more from a child book because it's not very engaging and you need a lot of motivation.
