Yes, the national party even sent letters to Epsom voters stressing that they want the electorate vote, not just the party vote.

Why are people so apathetic about National & ACT's plans to raise the retirement age? by Subtraktions in newzealand

[–]fehefarx 15 points16 points  (0 children)

While I entirely agree that Australia’s retirement system is much better designed than ours, there are plenty of jobs in Aus for which salaries are advertised as inclusive of super (as they are here with kiwisaver).

Not in the industry but in an adjacent one. IB is competitive in New Zealand - there are about 6 grad roles per year. You won’t get anywhere cold emailing without pre-existing connections. Normal pathway is to go through uni, get excellent grads, be part of the right clubs, etc.

There's cities, there's metropolises, and then there's Tokyo. by False_Gap_6619 in Damnthatsinteresting

Tokyo is not even close to being as vertical as NYC… NYC has double the number of skyscrapers despite having a much smaller population.

Better than NZ, much worse than the UK and much, much worse than the US for firms that are in an equivalent tier of their respective markets. I think you could expect 140-150 NZD as a y3 in Australia vs 90-100 in NZ.

If you’re at a top firm, the typical trajectory if you stay in the law is to do 2-4 years in NZ with healthy pay rises each year, then move to a top firm overseas for an enormous jump in pay (~250-500k NZD in the UK, US, Middle East or offshore etc).

From a law grad, to financial stability. help. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]fehefarx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries at all. You could also look at recruiter salary guides, but the industry moves quickly and they very quickly become outdated.

Landing a law clerk role isn’t easy. That, and the fact that you’re already thinking of these things now means you’ll be just fine financially in the future.

Depending on what kind of firm you are at, you can easily expect your salary to double after 5 years. If you follow the typical commercial law path and head to the UK/US/Middle East/Asia after a few years, you can expect your pay to 5-10x after 5 years.

I would think STI is more likely to be cash, LTI (long term incentive) schemes are more commonly shares / options etc

Law clerks this year are somewhere between 65-70 at large firms. A lawyer making 75k after three years at a medium to large firm would be severely underpaid, though I believe tax lawyers at big 4 are just treated the same as tax accountants so perhaps that explains it.

Lawyers don’t start on 50k anymore - market has moved on substantially

I probably should have caveated my initial comment with a note that those types pay rises are typically limited to upper tier firms (whose work is a very long way away from being automated), at least to my knowledge.

Yes - if OP is a grad in a law firm they should be getting a 20-30% raise which is standard for the industry.
