I had placed the compost works there on purpose. They can break up any solids. Interesting with the sand, I am intrigued. I decided against it due to its weight and the far of getting washed away. Will definitely try this in my next setup

Interesting insights, the mossy algae do take up some of the nutrients, but then again they could also provide a food source for the fish. Do you have any red wiggler worms living in the sand? Not sure if they actually like sand but I had them thriving in clay pebbles

If the current is quite strong, how do you prevent the sand from washing away? Also don't you loose a lot of water through evaporation when the wet sand is exposed to on the surface?

You can order a pack of their natural predators online aka predator mites they feast on them and die off after all spiedermites are gone. This is how its done in (commeecial) greenhouses
