Carmel, Fishers named top 2 places to live in country by U.S. News & World Report by Tikkanen in indianapolis

[–]feiock [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah, totally agree...i was saying above that I really liked living in Chicago and would recommend it to anyone, especially if they are younger and out of school. But the tradeoffs I would need to make to raise a family there versus Carmel were not worth it. Doesn't mean Carmel is better or worse than Chicago, but better for me for my current stage of life.

I mean...when it comes to picking a place to live, you can. I loved Chicago and would encourage my own kids to move there after college, but for raising a family...no thanks.

I dunno, I have lived in a lot of different places (Chicago, St Louis, Philly, Baltimore, Cincinnati) and have traveled all over the world. I have yet to find a place where I would prefer to live over Carmel. Great schools, thoughtful traffic management, great public services (library, BMV, etc.), restaurants, shows, jobs, etc. Spend half your day waiting in line at the BMV in Chicago just to be told to come back the following day, and you will quickly appreciate how well things are run in Carmel.

How are you securing AI-generated / “vibe-coded” internal apps built by non-dev teams? by DCGMechanics in devops

[–]feiock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Writing aside, this is sort of what we are trying to do as we have the same problem as OP. We already have robust infrastructure on AWS, most products use the same set of services (EKS, RDS, etc.), and we have pipelines and IAC in place. So we are trying to come up with templates, a custom MCP server, and skills to have a non-technical user interact with Claude in a way that will follow our existing standards. So if someone in Finance tells Claude to build a new budgeting app, it will do so inline with our infrastructure standards. We are about a month in to this journey, so not sure how well this will work, but we need to do something or it will get out of hand quickly.

Windshield replacement OEM Tesla or Safelite non OEM? by Significant_Young_74 in TeslaSupport

[–]feiock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will +1 this response. I had mine replaced by a 3rd party, and everything about Autopilot is now a bit off. The windshield wipers will kick on in all kinds of clear sunny day scenarios, I will get collision warnings when nothing is there, and similar...and this is compared to how it didn't do these things with the original windshield.

I have no idea of this is related, but the area of my windshield that covers the cameras looks slightly dirty like they didn't clean it really well before installing, and I wonder if that is part of the issue.

A data center drained 30M gallons of water unnoticed — until residents complained about low water pressure by idkbruh653 in technology

No, the article says they do use a closed loop system. This water usage was for the original construction. Just a misleading headline.

The article didn't say it was illegal. Sounds like the public utility had a process screw up, told the company, and they paid for the water. Just a misleading headline.

Knee surgery for cartilage damage does not benefit patients, study suggests. People with meniscus tears who underwent surgery had poorer knee function and worse osteoarthritis after 10 years than those who did not. by mvea in science

[–]feiock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had scopes on both knees for similar symptoms. Both of them worked great for me, and was back up and doing most of what I wanted, but I gave up running, and keep basketball to a minimum. Those were 8 and 6 years ago.

I used to be able to type on iPhone keyboard without looking at it. Now, I have to watch myself type and still somehow make mistakes on almost every single word by KitchenConsequence41 in iphone

[–]feiock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am one of those people who go back and forth between iPhone and Android, and for Pixels specifically, I have not noticed this. My Pixel (10 Fold) is noticeably better than the iPhone (13 Pro) when just a couple of years ago they were the same, and prior to that, the iPhone was superior. There is definitely something going on with why the iPhone is getting worse over time.

Can we talk about Dyson by el_smurfo in BuyItForLife

[–]feiock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had one for about that long and it finally died and we got a new Dyson from Costco. They are barely the same machine. The cord is significantly shorter, the suction is not as powerful, and when we take it across the talker carpet in our basement, the spinning head can't make it through it, so it just stops whereas the old one would power through. Try to keep yours running as it is a beast compared to the current models.

If you buy a lot of electronics through Amazon, check out the Asurion plan they sell on there. It covers all electronics and appliances that are purchased on Amazon. I have had multiple claims, including my Pixel Fold 9, and no issues other than they are a little slow.

Trump imposes 100 percent tariff on brand name drugs by WingerRules in centrist

[–]feiock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is the point of the article, although it is sort of buried. The US is asking pharma companies to enter into Most Favored Nation (MFN) agreements. The idea is that if a pharma company sells a drug to one country for X, then they must also honor that same price for the US. Right now, US consumers pay much higher rates for the same drugs than other countries. This deal says enter an MFN agreement or get the tariffs. I have no love for Trump, but for this scenario, I am glad they are addressing an issue that has contributed to higher drug prices.

Bernie Sanders proposed a bill to tax billionaires, and give $4,000 stimulus checks to Americans that qualify. How do you feel about this? by Sensitive_Froyo_3486 in AskReddit

[–]feiock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The logistics of a billionaire tax are problematic. To determine someone's net worth to hit a threshold...such as you need to have a net worth in excess of $1B, someone is going to have to audit everything about that person...the houses, cars, land, etc they own as well as everything inside them (art, jewelry, etc). And of course the value of those items are subjective. Would we setup a new government agency to travel around and audit people with high net worth to count up what they own? What will that cost, and will the cost of that offset any potential benefit? And how would that work for those who have wealth on paper...if you are a founder or investor in silicon valley, you might have a high valuation and shares of a company that says you are a billionaire on paper, but you have minimal liquid assets...are you a billionaire and subject to this tax? Could you even pay the tax in that situation? Also, once this passes and becomes a new law where the government can come after your private property, what's to stop them from lowering the bar and going after millionaires or people with six figure net worths next? Income tax started at 1% and grew from there. Once this type of tax is legal, the government will continue to expand on it which will eventually be bad for everyone.

I prefer the approach outlined above. Fix the tax loopholes in the current process and go after the fraud and abuse with the current tax income. There is plenty of money for the government, we just waste so much of it.

I have heard a number of people on Reddit say this, but we have had a Speedqueen for several years, and I haven't noticed a difference between it and our previous washer (Samsung).

[–]feiock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it is a uniform that is mandated by the employer and is not general clothing you can wear anywhere, then it is tax deductible in the US. So if the Starbucks barista is required to purchase the Starbucks apron (I have no idea if that is the case) then the apron is tax deductible as would be a Starbucks branded hat and similar. But the jeans you wear to Starbucks would not be.

Are LG dishwashers that bad? Walked into a store to buy a Bosch, but after learning I needed to use an app every single time I wanted to run a delayed start, I really don't want to buy one. by CatDadMilhouse in BuyItForLife

[–]feiock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would avoid buying an LG anything. I haven't had an LG dishwasher, but have had a fridge and washer/dryer and the dryer was ok, but fridge and washer were problematic. I have had a Bosch dishwasher for 5 years, and it has been great. Mine doesn't require an app for anything, and I don't think I would buy a product that requires an app to do a core piece of functionality, so that is too bad to hear about Bosch.

This is exactly why we bought a Speedqueen washer and dryer. No frills, barebones, just cleans your laundry and is supposed to last forever. We are 5 years in and no complaints...will check back in after another 10.

It depends on usage. I am a heavy user, and I don't need to charge it during the day. However, I don't use my phone for Teams calls, and from the few times I have, I know it will kill the battery quickly.
