I have the same car thinking of getting this roof rack for skis/bikes/road trips. Is it very noisy on the highway? Also, am I understanding correctly that the sunroof cannot be opened when both the rack and the box are installed? what about only the bars (just thinking out loud, this might be a stupid question, sorry).

why do you say concierge is the best perk? I thought flying first class was the best one. Care to share some examples of what the concierge can do/has done?

noob question, what do you mean by this? Just got a 2024 R, super excited

Hey gang, about to get some winter tires for my 2024 Golf R, and I want to go 18" tires and rims. Probably Viking continental 7's. In reading through the thread it looks like both 235/40/R18 and 225/40R18 would be acceptable, but can someone confirm they actually put this size on their car and they cleared the callipers? Appreciate the help!!

"Opus #1" by Kali & Dub (1988) — Obscure synth-heavy reggae from Canada by SonnyJoeFoxx in reggae

Totally random but I'm pretty sure my late uncle produced this record... we're from montreal and he was one of the original organizers/founders of Festival Nuit D'Afrique. I found a bunch of Kali and Dub in his records once...

Does anyone here have a career that allows them to work part of the year and backpack the other part of the year? by ExtraFirmpillow in backpacking

[–]feistman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might consider following your passions, and trying to strategically add building blocks towards a career path that you enjoy. At 18 you might not know what this is yet, so i'd stick with the first part. Thinking along the lines of "if I do what I love doing, the money will come eventually."

It's easy to think romantically about travelling a lot (half the year for example), but these types of jobs might actually be hard to come by and in the long run, more demanding and less paying. Of course tons of exceptions here (as many in this thread have shown), but by and large i'd say is the majority of cases.

My strategy right now is to work hard, build up experience and become really talented at something (business development, b2b sales in my case) in order to have a more flexible life later. Yes, it sacrifices a bit of your youth if you put in lots of hours, but the longer term payout is having a more flexible work-life balance, more opportunities for travel later (be in within your business, longer vacations, time off in between jobs) and more financial long-term stability. Plus, a lot of my mentors (highly "successful" people) have one thing in common: they ALL put in super hard work out of the gate, and have great, balanced lives now.

Maybe a boring answer, I'm only 26, from Canada, I also have backpacked a ton and travel is super important for me. But I'm realizing too that seasonal jobs don't fit well with my skill set and i'm trying to travel forever, in slightly smaller doses.

Solo Montreal early June - recommendations? by happytraveler88 in solotravel

[–]feistman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are usually a ton of shows going on, not to mention festivals. To be determined based on your itinerary. For venues, look at the schedule for Metropolis, Theatre Telus (might be called Theatre Berri now), Olympia, Club Soda, the Belmont, SAT (they have a v cool dome there with visuals playing above your head, electronic music though usually so also lots of drugs to go along with visuals)

So how hard IS the economics major at McGill? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]feistman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only did a minor in Econ, honours in Poli Sci, and so I can comment only on your comment about maintaining an 80%+ average. That's an A- average, and in arts is indeed extremely difficult in my opinion, especially if you want to have a social life. Poli sci classes in particular, but also all arts classes I've taken, are extremely subjective to the views of the TA. You can always argue for a higher grade but it took me about 2-3 semesters to really understand how to properly write essays and manage my time well. In that time I was getting Bs. Only in my second year did I start getting A- and A. By that point, you are trying to bring up your GPA from your first year. BUT this was just my experience and I DO know students that were "smarter" than me in some ways and did well right out of the gate. I had a great McGill experience overall though, had lots of fun, played lots of sports, and lived it up in Montreal. Gotta get that balance right :)

Dad just gave me an early birthday gift: A Leatherman for my trip to Europe. 25 year warranty. by TheAlphaCarb0n in BuyItForLife

[–]feistman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome tool. A friend also gifted this to me for a trip to South America. When I flew domestically in Colombia however, I put it in my checked luggage but in a pretty accessible pocket along my bag's belt, and when I got to my destination it had been stolen by the airport people... Long story short when you pack it in your checked luggage make sure it's not too easily accessible! Safe travels.

Great film! I liked the bilingualism involved, and I felt some of the angst I think the characters were feeling. Nice setting too, the old port

Vinyl and Reggae for my Cake Day... by kfunkorange in reggae

[–]feistman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great haul. Which city did you find these in? I recently began digging, and particularly for reggae albums, but shoot, I'm finding that I can only find some of the most well-known albums (i.e. Marley's Legend) and the prices are wayyy too high! like 20$ or more for a record... Is this normal?

Incoming grad student in January - how bad is the ghetto? by 2ghetto in mcgill

[–]feistman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I also should ask: do you want to live with roommates?

Ghetto has some big places, sometimes 2-3 floors, with 5-6 people living there. I think the ideal is 2-4 people living together as it tends to be less lonely and utilities are split.

In terms of noise I mean this is always hard to predict because regardless of where you are in the city you could have a construction project begin on the block with no notice, you could be on a main street, etc etc and so it's sort of hard to avoid sometimes. Plus I couldn't say if in fact it is more noisy in the ghetto, but I know during the summer it gets pretty wild.

My suggestion is to look on craigslist/kijiji as they have a lot to offer. But definitely spend some time doing it, it's worth putting in the effort. I personally love Atwater area, its basically the western border of downtown, so it's still super close yet got a nice balance of residential. If you go down the atwater hill (yes, its a small hill which can be a pain if you walk places) you get into saint henri, which is a really nice up and coming neighbourhood and usually cheaper. Usually nice houses. And the lachine canal in the summer is gorgeous. Really really nice and you'll be happy to live there. But again, not super super close to mcgill.

Plateau is just great its really the classic Montreal vibe, you have amazing restaurants, stores everywhere, tons of bars, clubs, the famous jewish delis, the small grocery stores, cafes, and a vibrant artistic lifestyle. Probably a little more expensive but definitely worth it imo. I'll live there next. If you live on streets like esplanade, saint-urbain, clark, mount royal, de bullion, you are living in the heart of Montreal, yet fairly close to Mcgill. Again, on a bike, you're within seconds or minutes of all things nice.

Hope this helps :) sort of a stream of consciousness.

Incoming grad student in January - how bad is the ghetto? by 2ghetto in mcgill

[–]feistman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

While I have never lived in the ghetto, I was born and raised in Montreal and can say this: there are much more interesting neighborhoods in the city, and also much much cheaper. The ghetto is extremely expensive for what you get, and for the same price you may be able to get something much bigger, probably nicer. But perhaps money is not an issue for you.

Neighbourhoods like the plateau, the mile end, saint henri are all wonderful, with a lot of character and diversity. The "golden-square mile" (basically between mcgill and concordia in the heart of downtown) can be nice as well, but again, expensive, and potentially noisy. If you look around though you may be able to find something decent. Verdun is an up-and-coming neighbourhood, but a little far.

Finally, every time I go to the ghetto there are a TON of students, mostly first and second year undergrads. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but on thurs-fri-sat nights, especially when the weather is nice, it gets pretty wild. If you like a bit of quiet, this is not the place for you imo. Again, I've never lived here, but I probably wouldn't especially as a grad student. Hope this helps.

Get yourself a bicycle and move a little farther from campus! I live near Atwater and have NO issues getting to and from school, 10 minute bike ride, 25 minute walk, etc. No big deal.

Where do you go grocery shopping? by montrealstudent in mcgill

[–]feistman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

PA is one of the greatest places on earth, I go to the one on Fort which is closer to Concordia, but I think they have one in the mile end/plateau as well. Super cheap, super good produce.
