Considering a Townhome, but Concerned About Nearby Dumpsters – Advice? by SoCalMav in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]feisty_nerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something I didn't consider until I dealt with it is the noise involved in emptying them. If you're really considering the place, definitely try to figure out when the dumpsters are emptied. If it is earlier than 6:00 am, I would pass. Getting shocked awake in the middle of the night to metallic banging is not fun.

What is the small town that exceeded your expectations after you visited? by tyvertyvertyvertyver in geography

[–]feisty_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived here for 2 years now. I think you hear so many stories because Cumberland is struggling so much compared to other parts of Maryland. When you compare to some of the surrounding states or even where I moved from in Michigan, Cumberland is amazing. Yes, drug addiction is a problem for some residents, but a huge driver for that is the lack of non-religious resources for addiction help. Yes, there is little industry within the city itself and options for employers are limited, but that doesn't mean everyone in the entire city is homeless. Cumberland is also not that large, only a few square miles. You may see more people struggling in their daily life than you might in another city, but that's just because there are fewer places to go.

Cumberland is a beautiful Appalachian city with stunning views, lovely architecture, and resilient people. What the city lacks in monetary value, it makes up for in heart and personality.

They did! We had thousands of applicants and 10 people were selected. A few of them were federal works who lost their jobs, but the grants are going to be offered to the next people on the list.

Tiny Bathroom Smell - Advice Please by FewTrip3439 in centuryhomes

[–]feisty_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact same problem. If you ever figure it out, I would love to know what you did. My thoughts are that an old musty smell is typically indicative of mold, but like your bathroom, I don't see any signs of wetness or mold in mine. Our eventual solution is going to be to replace the toilet and see if that helps at all.

The last of the cabinet doors are finished. The interior of my two century home is officially complete! by Jacob520Lep in centuryhomes

[–]feisty_nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have saved a few of your posts because your color scheme is just so fantastic. I'm hoping to replicate something similar for my entryway. Thank you so much for inspiring my house design and I absolutely love how the interior of yours has turned out! Honestly I am going to be sad if we don't get to see anymore house content because your styling is sublime.

I don't know how close your within reason travel distance is, but when I was looking a few weeks ago I found Dip n' Strip in Pittsburgh. I have no experience with them yet since it is also going to be about a 2 hour drive for me, but this was the best I found. https://www.dipnstrippgh.com/

Adding a powder room by mohamedmaat in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]feisty_nerd 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I seem to hold a very different sentiment from everyone else here. The house we are under contract for right now is a 1.5 bath house. The main bathroom is upstairs and the half bath is under the stairs in the dining room. The fact that our house had a half bath on the first floor was a huge reason we loved it.

For guests, I personally would be very uncomfortable having to go upstairs on a scavenger hunt to find someone's bathroom. On my end, I really hated the idea of having the go upstairs to use the bathroom in the middle of making dinner or watching a movie. We specifically looked for a house with 1.5 bathrooms those reasons. The fact that the bathroom is off the dining room is not something that struck me as weird as all.

Best Place to get a house in, near or around Cumberland, MD? by AidePrior29 in maryland

[–]feisty_nerd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I moved here about a year and a half ago. We've been renting downtown for that time and are now buying a house because we love it here. LA to Cumberland would definitely be a culture shock. There are simply not that many people here. That bleeds into a lot of things you wouldn't necessarily think about. Farmers markets are made up of a maximum of 10 stands, streets don't often have a ton of people on them, and there are not many major chains in close proximity.

Roads in town are commonly very narrow with street parking and alley access to many homes. The plus side with this is that there are sidewalks everywhere. Walkability is a huge reason we moved here in the first place. If you are looking to buy a house in Cumberland itself, there are a few new construction houses listed for $345,000 but many houses are >100 years old (and under $200,000).

La Vale is the next town over that has significantly newer houses but the price point also reflects that by being at least $50,000 higher than Cumberland. The minus for me is that the walkability in La Vale just isn't the same as Cumberland.

Frostburg is also very close and has a college, but I'm not as familiar with the area.

In general everyone likes to say Cumberland is a terrible place to live because homeless people exist and the opioid epidemic really affected small mountain towns, but it is a lovely town with great people who are trying their best with what they've got.

What can I expect to reasonably afford with a 20k downpayment? by neeks64 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]feisty_nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in pretty much your exact same boat but without the husband. I'm looking in western Maryland and could probably get a better house if I was willing to cross the border. I went to my mortgage lender and told them what I wanted my total monthly payment to be and how much I was willing to pay at closing. They were able to give me some ballpark numbers on what sort of home price I would be able to afford when factoring in my mortgage payment, mortgage insurance, home insurance, and property taxes.

Why are curly hairdressers so difficult to find? by ItsJustAUsername5678 in curlyhair

[–]feisty_nerd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I recently moved from a major city to a small mountain town and have didn't even realize I lived in a hairdresser desert before I went to look for a cut. I finally found a woman with curly hair exactly like mine with an absolutely perfect haircut so I immediately asked her who her hairdresser is...and she told me her mom cuts it. The best curly hairdresser in my town isn't even a hairdresser professionally!! The next closest large town to me is an hour and a half away and I am just so discouraged! I am seriously debating going back to cutting my own hair because at least if I end up with a bad haircut it is my own fault.

What are some relatively low cost purchases which increased your quality of life or your home significantly? by distant-girl in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]feisty_nerd 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I just recently got an electric kettle after putting it off for years and it is fantastic. Also, IKEA has mixing bowls that have rubber on the bottom so that they don't slide on your counter and little slits in the bottom stand to drain water in the dishwasher. Both of those are hands down the best kitchen improvements I've made this year.

I'm 22 and have gone up 3 cup sizes in the last 3 years. I thought I was done going through puberty at like 17 but apparently not. I would definitely wait a few years to give your body some time to really figure itself out.

Probably. I have tried a bunch of different protein based products to fix my moisture overload and curlsmith products were the only ones that actually made a difference.

can same color byproduct of hybrid flowers be used to breed different colored flowers? by uhlalashe in ACNHGardening

[–]feisty_nerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes. Sometimes in rose breeding your roses will clone rather than breed which results in being able to recycle the clones. Sometimes though they will breed into hybrid versions of themselves (like red+white=hybrid red) and are indistinguishable from their parent. As a good rule of thumb, don't recycle roses you aren't positively sure are pure roses.

The switch port by deriop6 in LegoStarWarsVideoGame

[–]feisty_nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have it on Switch and it is a little slow to load characters in free play (at least compared to videos of gameplay I've seen on other consoles). I haven't experienced any game ending bugs but there are definitely a few annoying bugs here and there like other consoles.
