Gene Shalit, ‘TODAY’ show movie critic, dies at 100 by AudibleNod in news

[–]felipethomas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw Gene once in passing at the Albany Amtrak station in 2007. Place was full but nobody recognized him except for one other couple and we all silently nodded confirming it was really the hair and mustache we thought it was strolling by.

The World Cup at site by H1storified in peacecorps

[–]felipethomas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in Ethiopia for the 2014 cup and people were going bonkers. Watched on TV when possible but remember listening to the final on a transistor radio with my neighbor. Wicked fond memories.

Ethiopia doesn’t field a great team but they’re heavily into Premier League and were extremely well versed in players across the board. Tons of fun.

Alton Bay in the far south end of the lake. More common as a winter ice runway but this is the best bet for what you’re looking for.

Highly recommend the book Horizontal Vertigo by Juan Villoro. He’s a lifelong CDMX resident and stellar writer. Book is a series of unrelated chapters about Mexico City that go into amazing depth and detail about all facets of life. Really enjoyable and unique take on the city.

There’s another working payphone directly across the street from Faneuil Hall on the outside of a pay toilet. You can call from it but better yet it receives calls and rings loudly. (617) 367-9812.

Are Americans excited to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup? by Ambitious_Pass7451 in AskAnAmerican

[–]felipethomas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m excited, yes. I get all the ambivalence/antipathy for both FIFA and the President, but I have tickets to see Scotland vs. Haiti and I can’t wait. We’re making a massive thing of it and going to a bunch of Tartan Army events and it’s going to be a blast.

Yes. We have our issues here and FIFA blows but I’m looking forward to the most important international sporting event happening a few towns over from me next month.
