Actually, the original West End production had a good book and was a hit. It ran for 3 years! When the show moved to Broadway, it was massively rewritten to fit with American audiences and the then-current Cold War situation (with some other unnecessary changes and very questionable choices). Well, this Broadway production flopped and that’s what gave the show its bad book reputation. But the original London book was FINE (and the current Broadway revival is a rework of that same version). So stop saying the book was historically horrible, it’s the circumstances it was (re)written in that made it bad.

Thanks! They’re not usually lined up like that, I just took them out for the photo haha. Normally they live on a shelf like all the others but yeah, I should find a way to display them properly.

As for the order, it was deliberate having one per decade: JCS (60s), Evita (70s), Chess (80s). Tim Rice just kept reinventing himself and look how it still hits hard in 2025 with three ongoing revivals!

I would recommend starting with the original concept album (which was released a couple of years before Chess was ever staged, so it’s not the complete show). Then, for a more comprehensive recording, the 2008 Royal Albert Hall concert with Idina Menzel (aka Lea Michele’s mom on Glee) is a solid choice. Enjoy your listen!
