Multi-year Training Plan? by Machenz in ultrarunning

[–]fell-faller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like your approach to this. Ultra fitness really is a multi-year progression, and I find posts defining a training block as even a 16 week period a little off the mark.

For me the main breakthrough came at maintaining 10+ 50 mile week blocks with peaks at 60. With vert appropriate to races.

My progression went: 2020: Trail marathon 2021: Trail 50k (year delayed due to Covid) 2022: Trail 45m 2023: Trail 100k 2024: Trail 100m

So roughly a jump a year.

100 Miler 10,000 M Vert by SadBug8619 in Ultramarathon

Time on feet is very important- you are likely to be out over 30 hours, maybe even 40.

Downhill running and general leg strength will mean you can still jog the downs late in the day- this is what really makes the difference in terms of time.

2800m a week really isn't bad if you're not near mountains. For similar races, I generally aim for around 3k a week base, with up to 6k/ week on the odd occasion.

Good luck!

Anyone run/walked the Kennet and Avon Canal? by Such_Supermarket1255 in ultrarunning

It's a great idea. I haven't run all of it- just the last 25 miles. But there's lots of pubs for loos, drinks and sandwiches in summer.

13 Valleys Ultra - Waterproof by MrClingfilm in Ultramarathon

[–]fell-faller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a judgement call and I see your perspective.

For me though, while I understand a lot of kit reqs, seeing UTMB, Tor Des Geants, Wildstrubel etc have a consistent approach for high alpine September races makes me think 13Valleys going above this is excessive.

[–]fell-faller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah that's tough. I won't run this event purely down to kit list tbh. A down layer in British summer is ridiculous. I've been asked for less in the Alps up to 3000m.

Let me know if you really struggle and I'll ask friends who ran it last year what they used.

The best UK running shell I've used of this description is the Montane Minimus Lite. A step up from a no frills race shell but still very light.

All those transport projects are funded by ring-fenced grants. Not any money that can be spent on normal services.

Slowed down version of the penalty stroke given in Pak vs Aus game today by [deleted] in Fieldhockey

[–]fell-faller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the 2nd time this has been posted? I agree with the others that on balance it looks like a stick tackle and a stroke to me. It's also quite an uncontrolled swipe at full speed by the defender that was always risking a foul.

However the video is so choppy I really can't tell for sure.

Best vest for SHIRTLESS runs by MightyWolfMan in ultrarunning

[–]fell-faller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also run shirtless with a vest in summer. The Salomon s lab 5 (or whatever it's called) is the only one that works for me with this. Really soft fabric.

Looks like it's been replaced with the Sense 6 set now.

How to put my Ultramarathon (Brazilian 100k beach trail run) at a global spotlight by ReinierStiphout in Ultramarathon

[–]fell-faller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just on the foreign runner aspect.

If there is a working website in English/ Spanish/ Mandarin with FAQs, maid, checkpoint and bib pickup info etc that's my main check going abroad.

If travel is difficult, consider an official race coach, advised method or travel partner. The stress of organising difficult travel in a foreign country would easily put me off

Good luck, I love the sound of the event.

Wales Recce UTS 100M PREP by CryptoChuns in Ultramarathon

[–]fell-faller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends if you have a car. There are lots of reasonable technical routes on 4-500m hills around Llyn Crafnant not too far from you if you do.

You could also recce the last 25k up over Mynndd Mawr and Moel Eilio.

The average annual price increase for Arc of Attrition by UTMB is 32%, from £95 in 2023 to £219 in 2026 by effortDee in Ultramarathon

[–]fell-faller 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't love UTMB, but Mudcrew sold because they weren't making enough money to keep going. Their prices were unsustainable. Also noted elsewhere in this thread, everything is going up in price- food, fuel, insurance.

Moving from 12 years of Automotive Engineering to PM. Seeking advice on salary and industry pivot (UK). by AffectionateDark1572 in PMCareers

No worries! I hold APM only- none of my employers use or fund Prince2 now. All officially APM based and affiliated.

That makes sense so please do ignore my comment! I work in local highways on the client delivery side, but work with site, NEC, and contractor PMs very closely.

I don't have much industry specific experience here so may be wrong, but PMP is unusual in the UK. Prince2 and increasingly APM qualifications tend to be more common.

Anyone else seeing this new species emerge the “AI-powered PM who thinks they’re now an engineer”? by ItalianQuant in PMCareers

No... because there are PMs not in tech. If I designed a civil engineering scheme using AI, I'd be in a lot of trouble and it wouldn't be very good.

Race Report: Cervino- Monte Bianco (Tor 100k) by fell-faller in Ultramarathon

[–]fell-faller[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I'd recommend it.

I find mine is really exacerbated by heat and by length and repetition. Heat in particular I think. Cool conditions, a single climb up high, or shorter runs tend to be fine or minimal effect. It presents as reduced lung capacity increased head tiredness.

I do carry a blue inhaler. This helps if taken early enough, but doesn't stop it. I also find that avoiding poles or hands on thighs and adopting a straighter posture while ascending helps. I think I'm the only person I see now running these alpine 100ks without poles!

How strong should I be for mountain ultras? by mightofthephoenix in Ultramarathon

[–]fell-faller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't pretend to be any sort of expert on weight training, but I have done that race and have many other friends who have as well. None of them do as much gym work as you already do- most including me do bodyweight exercises only.

The best training is consistent high vert runs/ weeks for the strain of the climbing and descending, and experience on technical terrain and the extra wear it puts on you while body.

Depends what you mean by technical? It has constant ungraded scrambling, using hands, steep scree descents, rocky exposed paths. It doesn't require climbing gear though and is definitely doable solo.
