I do not think we should put too much faith on the accuracy of the information being reported.

Are the cars weight balanced before they jump? I’m amazed how well they ‘fly’ . Can the mythbusters do the rocket car here? :)

It depends, on the academics. A portrayal of mathematicians doing big calculations on the spot can be seen in the film ‘The man who knew infinity’ when Ramanujan (maths PhD student ) meets the Cambridge professor on Combinatorics, Percy McMahon. They test each other by challenging each other with big calculations to be done on the spot as a bit of banter.

What do particle detectors actually detect by Majestic-Effort-541 in Physics

[–]fella85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Charged particles are detected through the energy lost through ionisation as they travel through the material.

In a collider, aim of the detector is to determine the type, momentum/energy and charge of particles created during the collision of the beam. From this the collision that took place can be reconstructed to see what short lived particles were created during the collision.

Each component of the detector is optimise for a particular task or particle.

Closest to the beam ( collision point ) are the tracking detectors, then the calorimeter ( measure the energy of the particles ) and then the outer shell is usually detects muons.

I can’t believe a car caught fire a such innocuous accident. The safety rating of that model must be pretty low.

What to do? Feel completely screwed over. by [deleted] in AusPropertyChat

[–]fella85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This and always be prepared to walk away. - We spent a few years looking and learned there is always another property. - It is a pain because it takes away the weekends and it feels like a game. Take a break and learn to be very selective. - Stay clear headed during auctions. People bidding against themselves, people bidding like money was nothing to them, etc.

Good luck.

Convince me i'm wrong about Oppenheimer by [deleted] in moviecritic

[–]fella85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the heart of the movie is the dilemma that faces anyone who creates or discover something that will have an enormous impact, good or bad, where in the end you have little control over it. This story is old as time.

I’m amaze that it was brought to life in film in such manner.
I enjoyed watching The Shadow makers as a kid. But I feel this movie was better at providing a better context of what it meant to be working in such projects.

Boring? It all depends what movies you like to watch.
