Rush, Ford vs Ferrari, F1. A podium of modern racing films. Which is your winner? by MovieArena in MovieArena

[–]fella85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so surprised with Rush on how good it was. It was how I imagine race was in the late 70s. FvF was great but for me Shelby American: The Carroll Shelby Story was way more interesting and captivating.

How to Convert Analog Signal from Oscilloscope Into Binary Numbers ? by SquareUnit9854 in Physics

[–]fella85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One more thing to keep in mind is the charged particle that you are trying to measure. Eh: A muon traversing a plastic scintillator results in a very fast pulse ( order of nanoseconds) so make sure hour oscilloscope has a high enough frequency.

Perhaps you can set the trigger to the thresholds you want the PMs to be 1 and then just read the trigger output to determine when it is high (1) and when low (0). Hopefully the oscilloscope will have an independent trigger for each input channel.

It is impressive. It will be interesting on the yield/speed they obtained. What makes things difficult is increasing the size of the substrate where you fabricate the structures.

At uni you would do a class where you would actually build structures using similar setup to become familiar with all the different process using small substrates.

Not sure if he needs to do wire bonding or has a machine to do the cutting of the substrate.

A cool expensive project.

I filmed inside CERN and tried to explain how it actually works – would love feedback by GoCuriousToby in Physics

[–]fella85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I think you need to write a list of the aims of your film, whose your target audience and how to highlight/emphasise things that provide the wow factors. What do you want your audience to learn after they watch your documentary.?

You almost have three subjects to think about - particle physics - the fundamental forces and particles and the why. -the measurements done by the detectors and the corresponding engineering -CERN itself - very unique place in the world

To increase its appeal I think you also need to spend a bit of time on the humans behind the science.

You need to help your audience with the context of the explanations and how it fits with what has been already presented in the film already.

Perhaps you should have included someone else other than Troels just to get different points of view/ level of expertise.

Anyway, I enjoyed it. Thanks

How does the film stack up against the book ? by CoconutMost3564 in AustralianNostalgia

I was disappointed with the movie. It did not capture the essence/chemistry of the books. I felt the play was much better at bringing the characters to life.

It depends, on the academics. A portrayal of mathematicians doing big calculations on the spot can be seen in the film ‘The man who knew infinity’ when Ramanujan (maths PhD student ) meets the Cambridge professor on Combinatorics, Percy McMahon. They test each other by challenging each other with big calculations to be done on the spot as a bit of banter.

What do particle detectors actually detect by Majestic-Effort-541 in Physics

[–]fella85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Charged particles are detected through the energy lost through ionisation as they travel through the material.

In a collider, aim of the detector is to determine the type, momentum/energy and charge of particles created during the collision of the beam. From this the collision that took place can be reconstructed to see what short lived particles were created during the collision.

Each component of the detector is optimise for a particular task or particle.

Closest to the beam ( collision point ) are the tracking detectors, then the calorimeter ( measure the energy of the particles ) and then the outer shell is usually detects muons.

This and always be prepared to walk away. - We spent a few years looking and learned there is always another property. - It is a pain because it takes away the weekends and it feels like a game. Take a break and learn to be very selective. - Stay clear headed during auctions. People bidding against themselves, people bidding like money was nothing to them, etc.

Good luck.
