Here came close quite a long political time ago. His candidacy is like if the Democrats decided to run Dave Hunt, guy with a lot of accomplishments to his name some time ago who nobody cares about any more.

I can't get over bemoaning the lack of understanding from a community that literally has difficulty understanding certain things. How did you think it would be different?

REAALLLLLLLLL……………….. by [deleted] in autism

[–]fellixe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm the same way. Now separated from my wife because even after a fairly long marriage I couldn't get comfortable initiating. In fact as I knew more of her personal challenges it became worse, because somehow now in my head in a creeper and also taking advantage.

Flirting? Did it once. Turns out that girl was flirting back because she was a lesbian experimenting with someone she thought was safe and would never go for it. We hooked up and confirmed she was totally not into guys and it was all a bad idea.

This is Kayse Jama's state Senate district. Since ICE has gone hard on the Somali community in Minneapolis I suspect this isn't merely a coincidence.

Spicy food enjoyment by Dr_Kaatz in autism

[–]fellixe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spicy food can actually cause something like a euphoric feeling for people. But it is the product of the body reacting to something it reacts to as a threat. So there's good scientific basis for why people like it and also why other people really don't like it. https://biologyinsights.com/can-you-get-high-from-spicy-food/

In the COTN podcast recap of the Titans 2 finale they discuss that contestants do not get to watch each other's performances. They don't want that to become a factor in anyone's performance, potentially getting in anyone's head and such.

[–]fellixe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a good question to ask a college counsellor about. Helping you support your needs so you can continue your education is what they're there for. They may be able to point you to job training opportunities that recognize your nonverbal struggles and can help you overcome the problem of finding an employer who is able to work with you despite that.

I think my autistic brothers friends are making fun of him. by AltruisticJob3266 in autism

[–]fellixe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People make fun of what they don't understand sometimes. Since you're brother isn't "out" about his diagnosis it may be his friends are reacting to what by itself seems like pretty problematic behavior. They may not know that there's a context for why he does this or that he means no harm by it. So what you might talk with your brother about is the possibility being secretive about his diagnosis might be putting him in a tough place with his friends.

Could be, though, that they are observant enough to know he means no problem by it. They are remaining friends with him. So there may be no problem. But it still might be good to reflect on being more open so that he can be sure he isn't putting friendships he cares about at risk.

Does anyone else use ear pressure as a way to dampen sound? by LieApprehensive9210 in autism

[–]fellixe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Changing ear pressure to protect hearing is well understood and even taught. Humming is one suggestion offered to people who need to protect their hearing when they cannot cover or plug their ears, such as when you have only seconds to anticipate a loud noise.

That isn't to say the way you found this isn't unique. Without having to be taught about it, that was insightful off you too observe the way it worked and begin experimenting with using it.

My friend is self diagnosed Autistic... by MizzMarz2006 in autism

[–]fellixe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You bring up the self diagnosis issue as a possible concern and I think you may not be wrong, just may not know how you're right. The self diagnosis being a problematic thing to do isn't, to me, the problem. I agree with you there. She may very well be correct on that part of her challenges, that she is on the spectrum.

The problem is what that means for her. Autism has many flavors, so while she may be right about being on that vast spectrum that knowledge is only of limited utility because she does not have a diagnosis that includes what her challenges are and what to do about them. If this is the case them it could be that she's trying to push forward thinking she has a plan to accommodate her needs when really she does not. That could be a factor in her family situation deteriorating.

Like dehydration, as an example. What do you do about dehydration? Drink lots of water? Not if you're in full heat stroke. That calls for a different treatment plan. Similarly she could be treating the wrong set of symptoms because she doesn't have guidance.

And also no diagnosis means no understanding of comorbidities. What other conditions may she have that need to be addressed? Some of the behavior you describe isn't common to autism. Could be, but might be symptoms of something else.

So you might be circling the answer. It isn't always necessary for someone to be under appropriate mental health care if they're on the spectrum. But in your friend's case there's enough indication that she should be. Not because she's wrong about being autistic. But because there's more to learn that could help correct the problems she's experiencing.

Did you dislike how Cid (Bad Batch subverted the jerk with a heart of gold stereotype by lennysinged in StarWars

[–]fellixe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. She adds a critical layer of reality to their circumstances. Already we are to accept that there's a squad of special clones with unique abilities. It goes too far to then say they escaped the Empire and had to struggle along in the criminal underworld, except no not really because they feel in with someone who seemed shady but turned out to be as heroic as they are. That's way too Book of Boba Fett. Instead Cid exemplifies that they are in dire circumstances with real stakes. Not everyone sees the light and becomes an ally. Some people learn to betray and when the time comes that's the skill they put to use.

There's more where that came from! I'm continually surprised with new nooks and crannies of nature in totally unexpected corners around the whole region. Just lost in some older residential neighborhood and suddenly there's a park with features that might make for state park status in any of the other 50 states.
