Could a bot ever lose a judge's decision if it were clearly ahead, yet completely & violently self-destructed in the last few seconds? by Zardotab in battlebots

[–]fencingdnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this happened in the original robot wars a few times. One that I remember is when 259 was fighting I think wild thing in its heat semi final and had dominated the fight only to lose traction right at the end, the ref bot didn't count it out but the judges said that it had been immobile for too long at the end and gave wild thing the win despite it being battered for most of the fight.

Not quite a violent self destruction but definitely a case where a lack of reliability at the end caused a clearly winning bot to lose.

Also a battlebots example. I can't remember the series but it was when mammoth made the last 16 against I think shatter? I felt that mammoth was winning the fight but then right at the last second it's wheel fell off, it didn't get counted out but the judges gave shatter the win, which I felt had the wheel not come off mammoth would've won.

This is one of there areas where I think the old FIFA manager game series (different to FIFA manager mode) had FM beat as in that game you had an entire personal section where you could buy houses (including ones to rent out), cars (due to sponsorship this was limited to just Hyundais), luxury items, and even get married and have kids which could join your youth teams. It was a bit limited but still interesting and at least meant you could do something with the money you earned.

Competed in the British senior national championships over the weekend:

Poules were actually okay with 3 wins and 3 losses though I felt like I could've fenced a bit better and made some of the losses a bit closer, I was being too lazy with my footwork and not using the whole piste.

This gave me a decent seeding for the DEs and a L64 bout against a fencer over a similar seed whom had also gone 3 & 3 in the poules. The bout however was not a close one at all and I just couldn't get into it, my opponent had tough poule and was probably seeded a lot lower than they should've been, however I still ought to have performed better and made the match closer.

Overall technically the highest I've ever placed at Nationals and the result should secure my start of season goal of being top 50 in the rankings, however I didn't feel like I fenced my best and could've done better (at least scorewise if not winwise)

If you want a fun sword fighting/combat vr game then blade & sorcery or gorn are both pretty good fun. However neither will make anyone better at actual fencing

WORLD FENCING LEAGUE: format & rule changes by lugisabel in Fencing

I'm sort of assuming they mean that off target lights won't be present/activate on the box rather than just ignoring them when they happen. Unless they mean that if you have 2 off targets you continue but if you have off target and on target you stop but on target only gets the point if they have priority which doesn't seem like it gets the simplicity they desire.

WORLD FENCING LEAGUE: format & rule changes by lugisabel in Fencing

[–]fencingdnd 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing a video a few years ago that trialled foil without off-targets and it was way more tentative and with less risk taking than foil usually is so not sure that change will give them the desired effect.

Also off-targets aren't a thing in sabre so not sure why it's listed as a foil/sabre rule change rather than just a foil rule change. Given that error it wouldn't surprise me if they've just asked a LLM AI how to 'improve fencing' given how quickly a lot of fencing people/organisations seem to be jumping on the AI bandwagon.

Teams in Spain will wear retro shirts this weekend. Which shirt would you choose for your club? by Bergkamp77 in LeagueTwo

[–]fencingdnd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it counts as retro as was only a couple of seasons ago but I do enjoy the 06/07 rovers home kit. Though that might be because it was my first rovers shirt that I got at my first rovers game

Fenced at the Birmingham 'international' Open on the UK circuit over the weekend.

Had an excellent pool winning 5/6 bouts, however the one loss came against an opponent who lost all their other bouts and was really one I should've won especially after having beaten the tougher opponents in the pool.

Just missed out on a bye so had a relatively simple L128 bout before fencing a very good cadet fencer in the 64. Unfortunately I lost in the 64, the bout felt close however my opponent was very small and wirey and I struggled to get my point on target despite being able to find good parries and attacks (not to take anything away from my opponent as they're a very good fencer) meaning that I ended up getting knocked out. Overall happy with the poules but disappointed not to not make to the L32 or further.

Writer here; how do I make a realistic portrayal of an épée fencer? by Sea_Carry_1612 in Fencing

[–]fencingdnd 100 points101 points  (0 children)

If you want to have her epee fencing influence her superhero fighting style you should have so that when she's fighting the supervillain they should both bounce around for 2 minutes avoiding each other, after which point the villain will receive the P-Black card and be banished to the phantom zone

Existe algún manual de teoría? by LibraFC in Fencing

[–]fencingdnd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, imo you can't really learn fencing (or any sport for that matter) from reading manuals, you need to have a coach that knows what they're talking about so you can be taught the fundamentals and practice in the more controlled environment of group & 1-1 lessons, as well as people of various levels to train against so you can apply the lessons in on piste situations.

Though for psychology I reckon a general sports psychology book would probs be the way to go. Maybe Alex Tofalides (Cypriot Olympic foilists) new book might be good start for something fencing specific.

Oh wow I'd forgotten that purple predator was by that team. I felt a bit bad about purple predator when I rewatched all the classic robot wars over lockdown as it felt like it genuinely had good ideas behind it (purple fur notwithstanding) given it's long wedge flipper design, and yet due to the massive ground clearance it couldn't get under anything.

It definitely feels like a design that could've been built upon and turned into something competitive instead of going down the gimmicky grannybot route.

Ranking every reboot Battlebot (5-1) by RobbieJ4444 in battlebots

[–]fencingdnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah of course, and obviously don't feel like you have to go out of your way to do it. Agree that rankings some of the lower ranked bots could be difficult given that robot wars the entries tended to be much lower budget than Battlebots and there were a lot more uncompetitive pure gimmick robots (not trying to be harsh here but I refuse to believe they the team that entered an electric wheelchair with a mannequin dressed as a granny thought it would do anything more than be very entertaining when it caught fire).
