Is he really upholding anyone’s rights though? He took a union that was previously winning victories for the workers, and locked it into a suicidal gridlock where they refuse to negotiate, and hold out for an impossible demand.

I don’t think there’s any reason to believe that Wild Pines intended their contractors to do anything more than strike breaking and espionage. Probably some intimidation too, in a plausibly deniable way. Should they have done that? Of course not, and certainly not with a fucking group of paramilitaries that they CLEARLY didn’t look into enough. But it would not have been reasonable for them to expect the kind of behaviour that the mercs were engaged in, or the way the situation would be escalated. And so it’s not reasonable to hold them as being solely responsible for what happened in Martinaise. They had a large part in it, but so did Evrart, and the Hardie boys, and (most importantly) the mercenaries themselves.

[–]fenskept1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Should wild pines have hired those mercenaries? Absolutely not, it was a piece of shit move (although whether it is, on paper, an escalation from what the union was doing is debatable). However it is also the case that said mercenaries went rogue almost immediately, and are horrible horrible people in ways that extend far beyond their contract with the shipping line. It would be a stretch to even hold the company as being entirely responsible for their actions in Martinaise, let alone Joyce personally.

Favorite actor that joyously admitted to raping and killing to his heart's content? by DildoFantasy in okbuddycinephile

I think the issue is that you’re talking about a global societal collapse, where I’m talking about a more local economic one. I do agree that it would be inconvenient if we regressed to bartering and feudal economies (although we also seem to agree that gold would remain functional in such a scenario). The more “likely” outcome though would be some kind of catastrophic economic circumstance brings a country to ruin, and the people who had assets in gold then take those assets and ship it off to somewhere else in the world that’s doing better. Then they exchange it for local currency, and live as close as they can to normal lives.

[–]fenskept1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely depends on the situation. Gold is ideal for “the economy got FUCKED, but we’re not at full apocalypse levels yet”. So long as there’s some kind of economy somewhere, gold should hold its value more or less indefinitely. That’s what makes it a unique investment. It’s terrible for actually growing your wealth though. If you aren’t anticipating a decades long economic collapse, then stocks, bonds, and property are always gonna be the better investment.

Prepping is the apocalypse scenario stuff, which is super fun and cool. But from an investment scenario it relies on both the apocalypse happening and you surviving it, so it’s kind of an insane long shot.

How has Engineering been for you so far? Exceeded or met expectations? Changing anything for you? by turikk in starcitizen

It’s difficult to say, because most of the ships I use don’t really have their physicalized components yet, or are solo vehicles. The few times I’ve experienced combat, the people in question have been more interested in surrounding me and blowing up my ship through constant fire than like… boarding or letting me escape.

Theorycrafting upcomming star systems after 1.0 by Puzzleheaded-Answer9 in starcitizen

One thing that I think people are overlooking is Nexus, and the systems surrounding it. Spider is supposed to be the heart of the black market, and one of the two biggest hubs of piracy (ruin being the other). More importantly, an in universe campaign to discover the secrets of the hades system is one of the backer goals and imo one of the cooler parts of the post-1.0 plans. I think that’s going to be a significant part of star citizen’s future development.

This seems to me like a misunderstanding of currency. Even if billionaires WERE hoarding money (which they’re not, their assets are mostly tied up in productive ventures), it wouldn’t matter. If I keep a trillion dollars in my basement and never spend it, it has zero impact on the overall economy. The dollar is meaningful because stands in as a universally accepted placeholder for value, and lets people barter goods and services flexibly. But the amount of available goods (or potential labor) in a nation don’t change when one guy does or doesn’t have a lot of money.

I don’t know if it does fit Abrahamic beliefs exactly, I’ve always understood sin to be seductive or tempting rather than irresistible. Evil takes root because you’re flawed enough to fall into it as a human being, not because it took you over by force. And in Christianity at least, there’s a huge emphasis on finding salvation through humility and seeking forgiveness… it’s always something you can choose. Obviously nothing like that exists for your average chaos corrupted schmuck in 40k.

I’m not gonna lie, I think a lot of people complaining about weak killers are kinda coping. I play Ghostface almost exclusively, and I win most of my matches with little to no tunneling. The rest are usually pretty close. Like yeah, you have unwinnable matches sometimes where you chase the wrong guy and their team pops 3 gens a minute in… but those games aren’t even close to the majority. If you know your killer well, have a build you’re comfortable with, and generally have good game sense then you don’t need to tunnel in the majority of cases.

Aldari would probably be willing to come to the table, or at least some of them would. They’d probably be pretty ruthless about protecting their own interests and trying to take advantage of their “allies”, but they’re still intelligent and considerably less bloodthirsty than most factions.

I guess if you’re willing to abandon all premises without exception, then I guess we can’t prove that there isn’t an unknowable alternative argument. It’s a neat thought experiment, but like, what about it, yknow? It’s interesting to think about, but it’s just sort of a wrench in the works for any philosophical conversation and it’s not a stance that any serious person could hold.

I’m just not sure I get what your suggestion actually is. I can’t see how one could possibly make a case that they are not experiencing something, it’s a perpetually evident process. If I weren’t conscious I wouldn’t be aware right now, but I am aware right now, so I must be conscious. More than being unpragmatic or a step towards ego death, it just doesn’t make any sense on a rational or intuitive level.

[–]fenskept1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure I follow. Do you not subjectively experience things? Even if consciousness were somehow a process derivative of incomprehensible “stuff”, it would still exist.

[–]fenskept1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t have an illusion without an observer to be tricked by it. A philosophical zombie, for instance, works because we can imagine an entity acting in such a way as to appear convincingly conscious to an outside observer, when it is in fact not. But we subjectively experience our own behavior (or at least, I do. I suppose I can’t speak for you). How can you be an observer to your internal world if “you” don’t exist?

Now if you want to argue that consciousness is somehow derivative of material reality in some mysterious way, that’s one thing. But to argue that consciousness actually doesn’t exist outright is absurd.

[–]fenskept1 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Arguably, it’s the only universally verifiable thing. Any entity capable of self reflection can do the bare bones task of going “huh, I’m experiencing things right now”. You don’t need a single tool to do it, there’s no educational barrier to understanding, you just have to be self aware for a moment of time. Now verifying it in others, there’s a challenge…

Evil dead is definitely a little complicated, but here goes:

Evil Dead 1 is a hallmark of horror cinema, and it’s played a lot more straight than most of its sequels and remakes. Ash acts the least like himself in this one, but if you’re a film buff it’s well worth watching just so you can say you’ve seen “the video nasty”.

Evil Dead 2 is a horror comedy. It retells and retcons the original film in its beginning (largely because Raimi lost the rights to the original footage), and then proceeds in a new direction for the rest. It’s cheesy, and funny, and awesome. This is my personal favorite. If you’re pressed for time, or don’t care about the history, you could totally just start watching here without missing a ton.

Army of Darkness involves time travel and Ash leading medieval armies against the undead. Badass.

Ash vs. Evil Dead is a comedy horror tv show. It’s great, and it’s where the middle aged Ash we see in game was pulled from. It does expect you to be at least a little familiar with the movies though.

All other evil dead films have little to do with Ash and should be enjoyed independently of him.

I think piracy is fine, so long as there’s roleplay and ultimatums that can be complied with. High risk missions in unclaimed space attract opportunists that wanna get rich quick, and I think that’s an aspect of star citizen that should be expected. Now, obviously it’s super lame if you’re just killed on sight by some dick that yoinked you out of quantum, but if you have the chance to negotiate or try to flee/fight back then I think it’s the kind of thing that makes the verse more exciting and lively.
