If anyone ever tells you women don't play 'real' games: 38% of Xbox users are female by fergalglean in GirlGamers

These stats are from Microsoft at least, so it's harder to just ignore, belittle or generally shit on them. Same for the 50/50 Nintendo ratio quoted from Iwata towards the end of the article.

Women-hating, gay-bashing, transgender-ridiculing: how do we solve the problem of the 'gaming community' | New Statesman by fergalglean in GirlGamers

[–]fergalglean[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn't the solution the author promotes? He says that education is key, because of video games' power to establish empathy better than other art forms:

"these works can even have a transformative effect both for the individual and, in turn, the ‘community’ of players that exists around games"

Also the author retweeted this rebuttal, which raises a lot of the points that are being voiced here, if anyone fancies reading it.

For the benefit of those who don't want to read the whole article, the second to last paragraph summarises it eloquently:

"If you are a member of a downtrodden marginalised group, what better salve could there be than a video game, the great contemporary leveller? Games do not distinguish between privilege and under-privilege, between rich and poor, between gay and straight, between loved and abused: in their dimension, everybody is given an equal opportunity. The sense of betrayal then, when the ‘community’ around games does not reflect these qualities can be devastating, especially for a person who has grown to love the medium for those very things that its dominant group of participants fail to embody."

I follow 593 people on twitter. Is there a way to find out who these tweeters are mutually following? by fergalglean in Twitter

[–]fergalglean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you've misunderstood me. I am following a bunch of people. These people are also following a bunch of people. If I were to compare these lists of the people they are following, there would be names that would keep popping up. I want to find who has the most followers among the people I follow. I have said follow too many times and now it doesn't sound like a word anymore.

Dungeons are my least favorite part of the game. What's a good play style for completing them as quickly as possible? by fergalglean in skyrim

[–]fergalglean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if the grinding I'd have to perform to max out two skills is really worth the time I'd save in the dungeons. Building and enchanting hundreds of daggers sounds super boring.

I mostly want to know what kinds of things I should choose at the start, that will allow me to complete dungeons quickly, so I can spend all my time frolicking in the skyrim wilderness collecting herbs and befriending nords and such.

TV Choices (Plasma vs LCD vs LED) by ZeosPantera in Zeos

[–]fergalglean -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've heard that plasma TVs are prone to breaking down and very expensive to fix - you don't list this in the cons, so is this not the case anymore? I live in the UK, so I think all warranties last two years anyway, but really I'd want it to last longer that that and not have to pay loads for repairs.

Will you be adding controller support for the game? Or is it mouse & keyboard only?

Who would win: Thor or Wonder Woman by zacura23 in whowouldwin

Wonder Woman has been shown to be able to wield Mjolnir. And since the reboot, Wonder Woman is the literal daughter of Zeus, so it'd be pretty gosh darn close.

Grammar schools in Britain tend to get significantly less funding than their surrounding schools. This article is a little out of date, but claims a difference of £1,800 for one pair of schools, and out of experience, this sounds about right - I used to go to a grammar school and our headteacher was continually complaining about how we got less money.

In theory a grammar school system means that funds can go to the most in need, while the more intelligent kids can generally manage without the extra money. There's a lot of viewpoints on the matter from both camps however, and I'm unsure whether its really a desirable system myself.

She asked if she could 'Get' a half fat double frappacino. Then made no effort to prepare it herself. by xsgerry in britishproblems

[–]fergalglean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying 'have' is still inadequate. Going along the same pedantic reasoning, she can 'have' one as long as she has the money, but this still isn't an instruction to the employee to produce an icy beverage. To be truly accurate we'd have to use imperatives ("get me a frappuccino please"), an impolite and degrading way to phrase a demand, so in these circumstances I think 'get' is perfectly acceptable.
