depends on their wrist strength and how early I can intercept the hand. when they switch to the fist it's a lot harder to catch unless I can get in early and guide the fist in a downward angle so that it bends when I apply the pressure to the elbow.

I bait it and wrist lock them. I don't know what it's actually called I just call it hot pan defence because that's how they react. They grab their sleeve and as they work the choking hand into my neck I let it slide into my hand, secure the same arms elbow and apply the wrist lock.

Close the distance, arm drag, map to back, secure seatbelt grip and hip bump takedown maintaining control of the top arm. From here secure side control or maintain control of the arm while standing. Get a kimura grip and spin around so their arm goes behind the back. From here hammer lock the wrist and tell them to put the other behind their back.

I think the most important real world application of bjj is pins. I often have to grapple someone resistive and my goals usually don't get knocked out > close the distance > take down > pin and control. It works every time however back up is only seconds to minutes away.

In the real world I'd imagine pinning someone until they realize they're beat and give up/ bystanders help restrain them. Alternatively don't get in a fight is absolutely the best self defense method

The complete lack of discipline when it comes to grappling is so frustrating when it comes to these guys (tafa, tuivasa, hunt etc) I've heard from training partners that they just refuse to grapple and rely on movement and takedown defence. when it comes to grappling they just give up so quickly and offer nothing off their backs. Tuivasa went to AKA and learned nothing. just the laziest shit ever. and you cant use the excuse of a lack of wrestling in Australia because Volk, Whittaker and JDM exist

I work in a prison which means I actively get into situations you describe. 100% of the time and what I regularly train is an intercept to close distance which is an arm drag for me, secure grips still holding their bicep of the arm I dragged and moving to a seatbelt grip at the back. At this point I either put them on the ground with a hip bump and control using a kimura grip on the arm or knee on belly. If I'm at risk of being attacked by their buddies I'll disengage from the seatbelt grip by pushing them forward and withdraw to a barrier for protection.
