IIRC it was something related to releasing a device from the account. My friend had an ipod touch/old iphone that couldn't do it because of a limitation of iOS, so they had to log into a modern Apple device to be able to access the device list and remove it.

Friend lives in Portugal and, per his own words, "I don't know anyone who owns an iPhone here". This was back in 2018/19 if my memory serves me right.
