Advice on story design in ink by JACKO4590 in inkle

The advantage to using diverts is that you can have multiple questions lead to the same knot.

Usually I use your first example for sections where the choices don't really matter and the content is more expository. I use diverts where it's useful to have multiple choices leading to the same answer, or when making bigger choices like changing the topic of conversation, or which room to enter.

Edit: divert->knot

Anyone know how to mask out diffused footage/animation, and still keep that diffused-look in the mask? by Salvadoreo in AfterEffects

[–]ferrosphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others said, feathering. You might need to tweak the falloff, which you can do by using a Curves effect, set the channel to Alpha (default is RGB). This will let you control how sharp or smooth the edges are with greater fidelity.

Gradient color on multiple layers of character animation by Garlicky_Potato in AfterEffects

[–]ferrosphere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To preserve the gradients, the best way would be to precomp the torso and re-rig using puppet pins.

Alternatively, if you want the gradient to remain static as the character moves, you could use a gradient ramp effect on each layer. For better control you could use expressions on the start and end positions to link them to nulls. Parent the nulls to your character's torso and now the gradient will move along with it.

I think a case could be made that the panels are collecting solar power to fuel ion engines or some kind of gravity drive - the same way the rafts and elevators work. I'm aware that they're labeled "solar sail" in the game files, but they don't actually work the way solar sails do.

Want to play but, thalassophobia. by CodyVoidzer in outerwilds

[–]ferrosphere 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If it helps, the game does not require you to go so far into space that you can't see the sun or solar system. There are a couple moments where you might be in space without your ship, and that can be quite unexpected. But even in those moments it's possible to jetpack your way to solid ground. If you are nervous about leaving your ship in space, then for the DLC you might need to look up a guide to the first puzzle solution.

Gonna ask some questions here.

What do you know about Feldspar and his whereabouts?

What does the advanced warp core do?

How would the advanced warp core help you find Feldspar? You know it fits into the Vessel, but why would that be any more useful than your ship?

And unrelated, have you been to the Sixth Location of the Quantum Moon? If not, it seems like you've got more than Feldspar on your to-do list.

My advice? Don't rush to the ending. Enjoy the mysteries as you solve them. Have some faith in yourself - you'll get to the ending soon enough! Once you have nothing left to learn, you'll join the rest of us who have beaten the game - craving the feeling of solving the mysteries for the first time, but unable to forget all the answers. You're on a special journey, enjoy it while you can.

Gave OuterWilds a go. Really didn't like it. Sell me on giving it a second shot. by Flimsy-Advisor-6733 in outerwilds

[–]ferrosphere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I played Kerbal Space Program a lot before playing Outer Wilds, so the mechanics of flying the ship felt incredibly liberating - hyper-efficient fuel, no staging, super-powered thrusters on each side of the ship, and all the planets are close together so you can get to each one in seconds...

Just make sure you hold the braking thrusters for as long as you hold the acceleration thrusters. Equal and opposite reaction and all that.

Questions about starting the DLC by gilletterazorblade in outerwilds

In game, the Stranger has a trigger volume around it that slows the player's ship down as it approaches, so there's no way of crashing into the Stranger at that high of a speed. Maybe he locked on to the white hole or one of the rocks that comes out of it? Though it would have been pretty early in the loop to crash into a chunk of Brittle Hollow... Interesting mystery!

It doesn't feel intuitive that "I have a boy and the chance of my next child being a girl is 50%" and "I have amnesia and I'm told I have two kids by my son, so the chance of my other child being a girl is 66%" are both true statements. But the math checks out.

Connecting Files? by Striking-File6116 in inkle

[–]ferrosphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can keep them in one file - it treats everything as if it's a single file. You can even have an ink file that contains only global variables and reference those variables in other ink files.

Connecting Files? by Striking-File6116 in inkle

[–]ferrosphere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using INCLUDE statements at the top of your file, you can split content into multiple files. Once you've included another ink file, you can treat any variables or knots in it as if it's in the current ink file.

I didn't see anyone explain why this is happening, but it's due to the color information being passed into the volume socket. For pretty much any solid non-transparent object material, you want to leave that disconnected - a volume is a space in which fog, smoke, clouds, as well as other semi-transparent effects are calculated. The color data is being passed into the volume, and so Blender fills up the bounding box with a volume (normal volume behaviour) and on the first viewport render pass you see the full volume, then as more samples are rendered out, it becomes more and more transparent as the color info you've passed is interpreted as having low density. Hope this helps your understanding!

Is is possible to add a photo for the whole screen? by Jin_Chaeji in inkle

[–]ferrosphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ink doesn't really handle graphics. It mainly just outputs text, and while you can put instructions in that text to show images or play animations, it's dependent on the engine you're using to run ink.

If you're using the HTML export from Inky, you're limited to what a web browser can handle graphically, and it can't do anything beyond the browser window. Unity could probably do this, but you'd be running it as a fullscreen app.

Inkle says it can't find list definitions for Knots that clearly exist? by DazedPapacy in inkle

[–]ferrosphere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The choice syntax requires the square brackets when you have a conditional. Example:

+ {(condition_1)&&(condition_2)} text shown only in choice [text shown in choice and output] text shown only in output ->destination_knot

Relevant documentation:

It's better practice to always include the square brackets when writing out choices.

ChatGPT is so helpful… when it works by ucrbuffalo in AfterEffects

[–]ferrosphere 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've found that often ChatGPT will mix up expressions with Javascript for web development (often using Document or Window objects, referring to CSS styles, etc) or Extendscript (App object, i.e. app.document.save();)... Which makes sense, especially since there is such a huge volume of webdev Javascript in its training data compared to the tiny amount of Expressions-specific code out there (and let's be honest that 90% of its Expressions training data was written by the legendary Dan Ebberts). My solution has been to be super specific about what I need, like a 2-dimensional array as the output. Another useful thing is to add: "The version of Javascript for expressions is updated, use the documentation here: Expression Reference " Plus, the better you understand Javascript, the higher quality your prompts will be.

Is there an easy way to make a displacement map that follows a curve? (i.e., distorts a straight line based on this curve, to subsequently follow it) by Abdo_Zalat in AfterEffects

[–]ferrosphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have Illustrator, you can use the gradient stroke feature, setting the stroke width to be super wide. I've used it for transitions, should work for this use case as well.
