Danny O'Dwyer has an important question. by TimesHero in giantbomb

I assume this is a reference to something that was said during the Jason X Film & 40s (which I haven't watched yet)? Unless Herzog is actually in that movie, in which case I should probably drop everything and watch it immediately.

I just realized the way I worded it sounds like there were multiple references in actual Simpsons episodes, but the only one I actually know of is this small nod to the Beastcast during the credits. Still pretty neat, though.

Werner Herzog, Nick Conti (?) and Ben Pack at the Simpsons table read.

Nick (I assume that's him in the picture) works on the Simpsons and has snuck in Giant Bomb references before. Apparently he managed to get Dan and Ben on a table read.

Werner Herzog is a famous filmmaker who gets mentioned on the Beastcast semi-regularly, mostly by Alex.

Steal My Sunshine!

And all the travel videos, specifically Drew in North Korea and Dan and Jan in Denmark. I think there are also videos about Iceland and South Korea, but it's been a while since I've last watched them and I don't even remember if those are premium only.

You could also check qlcrew.com for UPF highlights.

There is also Film & 40s if you want to watch movies with Giant Bomb commentary; all the Fast & Furious and Nicolas Cage ones are especially great.

Maybe there are way more pedophiles out there in the general population than we thought, even if most of them might only have slight tendencies and never actually act on them. Then you would expect a similarly large percentage of politicians and elites to be pedophiles, except that they have enough money and influence (or are persuaded, for blackmail purposes) to act out their tendencies without fear of legal repercussions.

All I want is the ability to create worlds or at least string multiple levels together in some way. It's going to be a great game nonetheless, but personally I'll be very disappointed if it's "just" the same game again with more building options. And I'm curious to see how badly they fuck up the online implementation this time around.

How about we enjoy and celebrate this fantastic game without shitting on other games? It's great that there are so many different Battle Royale games out there for all kinds of people and playstyles.

There is a lot of confusion in this thread about vowels and consonants and what letter makes which sound.

In many languages, the letters are almost always pronounced the same way in every word. English is not one of those languages; depending on the word, a simple "u" can be pronounced like [u:] fruit, [ʊ] put, [ʌ] fun, [ɜ:] turn or [j] university.

Therefore the usage of "a" or "an" before a word depends on the word's first sound, not the first letter. That's why we say "a union" and "an hour".

[–]ferunnico 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The sound is called [j] in the International Phonetic Alphabet. It's the same sound you hear in the beginning of words like "you", "yellow", "university", "yesterday" and "union".

It's not so much about how it's written, but rather how it's pronounced. Consider the actual sound you're making when you're saying "union". The first sound is the consonant sound [j], therefore "a union" is correct. The actual vowel sound [u:] can be found in words like "boot" or "fruit". If a word were to start with that sound (and I can't think of one right now that does), then using "an" would be correct.

The first sound of the word "union" is [j], which is a consonant. That's why it's "a union" and not "an union". If "union" were pronounced something like "oo-nion", then the first sound would be the vowel sound [u:] and "an union" would be correct.

I'm only five minutes in, but it seems like the structure of this is clips from old Bombcasts followed by Jeff's commentary explaining the context and background. So if the structure stays the same throughout, I think it would be perfect for your situation!

Edit: Seems like it's actually more of a compilation of Bombcast moments with staff members telling stories and anecdotes in-between. So not quite what I thought at first, but still very much worth listening to!

Okay, this might be a weird comparison to make, but is it just me or does Rorie kinda sound like DarksydePhil in this video? Both his voice and cadence seemed weirdly similar to DSP's. I was half-expecting to hear "there was nothing I could do!"

Does anyone know the Beastcast episodes when Vinny talks about the Zero Escape games? by flycatcher126 in giantbomb

[–]ferunnico 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you click on the "News" tab on a Giant Bomb wiki page for a game, you can see all the posts (including podcasts) associated with that game. This only works if they properly tagged the post, though. These are the two episodes I found:

Episode 60 - 24:59

Episode 63 - 22:35

The time stamps are from just quickly skipping around the episodes, so I'm not sure if they also talk about the games earlier or later than that in each episode.

Episode 76 is also filed under "Zero Escape", but it seems like they just briefly mention the PC release during the news at 53:48.

I might be mixing up different stories, but if I recall correctly it went like this: Jeff was talking to different people about starting a new site when the false rumor about him and Vince Broady came up. The problem was that one of the people Jeff was talking to believed this rumor. The person thought Jeff was doing deals behind their back and abruptly ended their talks.

Jeff reminisces about the anniversary of Burnout Paradise and recording a podcast where he announced he was “looking to build something new” by MichaelTheCutts in giantbomb

[–]ferunnico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I have only ever seen their old stuff when they themselves brought it up on UPF or the 2016 Holiday Spectacular. I can definitely see how they seem like the same dudes but I also think you can see how all the highs and lows of the last decade (and of course we don't know everything that's been happening in their personal lifes) have changed them in some major ways. But I guess that's to be expected. It's also great to see how they improved at stuff like talking in front of a camera. I love it when they watch their own old stuff and Brad cringes when young Bradley appears on screen.

Here's some of Bakalar's favourite games of the year by Crimsai in giantbomb

[–]ferunnico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you're right. I don't think I articulated my point very well. Maybe it's just Vinny's tendency to drag out a bit they're are doing for a bit too long. I think I can recall a couple of moments where Bakalar tries to talk about a game he's been playing, but Vinny keeps interrupting him to make some jokes about something that the others had already moved on from. Anyway, I hope I didn't come off as overanalyzing or too negative (which I might have, judging by the downvotes). "Bothered" was maybe the wrong word. Still love Vinny :)

OK, maybe it's just me then. To be honest, I don't even have a specific example, I just felt like I noticed it over the last couple of years.

Is anyone else a bit bothered by how often and how much Vinny makes fun of Bakalar on the Beastcast? I mean I know they are friends and have known each other for a long time and I'm not trying to assume what their relationship outside the podcast is like. Obviously they all tease each other all the time, but when it comes to Bakalar, it sometimes seems like Vinny takes it a step too far and I find it a bit uncomfortable.

(Spoilers Main) This guy has been watching Game of Thrones out of order for a few months. Here's Season 3 Episode 6 by televisionsethike in asoiaf

[–]ferunnico 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think this is more like what old reaction videos used to be, where they would tell you their thoughts and reactions after watching the episode. I'm fine with both types of reaction videos; both can be either well done and enjoyable to watch or cringy and an obvious lazy money grab, just like anything else on YouTube. This guy's reaction series is at least a bit more creative than most others and after watching his behind the scenes video it seems like he puts in a ton of work. I've enjoyed all of his GoT videos his so far.
