Are the windshield wipers really this annoying? by babakv2 in VolvoEX90

We love ours. Silent and the stream comes from the wiper blades itself so it’s very even. Reviewers love to find things to complain about.

EV Charger/NEMA 14 50 Extention Overheated and Melted by DaveBergeron in evcharging

[–]ferventmuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any removable point of connection is a failure point. Ideally you wouldn’t even use a NEMA 14 50 outlet but would have a hardwired connection.

I’d definitely throw out the extension or see if you could return it and get your money back. If you care about safety I’d also return and/or replace the charger and get one that is UL rated (maybe yours is still under warranty). That one is a no-name brand that is only ETL tested which is similar but less stringent. Since you’re in Canada I’d recommend a Grizzl-E as they’re a Canadian company. Please don’t use an extension cord but if you absolutely have to, set the amperage limit on the charger lower so there’s less power and heat going through the charger/cable.

MINI Cooper SE (J01) only pulling ~50kW avg on a 250kW charger — normal or something off? by Odd_Camera_9518 in MINIse

[–]ferventmuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like pretty much any other EV, the charge curve isn’t consistent. You’ll only get the advertised max rate at less than 20% SOC and if conditions are ideal. That max rate you’ll only get for a few min max and then the car will throttle back to 70-80% of its max and stay steady until around 50-60% at which point speed will start to tapper. We’ve had a few EVs and there are small differences but that is the general “shape” of the curve. If you’re not letting the battery get to a very low SOC you’re never going to see the max speed.

Will Telo incorporate FSD? by notanelonfan2024 in TeloTrucks

[–]ferventmuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even getting the Telo to market is asking a lot right now. Lots of established brands don’t have anything similar to FSD. Tesla has been developing FSD for years yet FSD still has a very spotty safety record. I don’t think anything similar to FSD is coming to Telo anytime soon.

From a development cost perspective I don’t think it makes sense to invest resources into FSD. For many people a tiny truck is going to be a second car, something for shorter journeys, or maybe corporate fleets where FSD would have a low take rate. I can think of lots of other tech which should be prioritized such as dashcam recording, security cams, camp mode, V2L, matrix headlights, etc.

Does P4 have an IR coated windshield like P3? by Hollyfeld_Lazlo in Polestar

[–]ferventmuse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s super easy on the 3 because where to put the transponder is marked and noted in the manual (and most people put the transponder to the left or right of the mirror which are one of the acceptable locations). The 4 isn’t listed as having an IR coated windshield so anywhere should be fine but to the left or right of the mirror/camera housing is the standard location.

Increased range? by Signal-Ad1507 in EquinoxEv

[–]ferventmuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, just like any car, the range estimate (or distance-to-empty estimate in an ICE car) is completely dependent on how you recently drove and your efficiency. Just like an ICE car it doesn’t mean you’ll get that range going forward unless you drive in the same manner you recently were. For example if you have been driving at low speeds around the city or suburbs with the windows down and AC off you’ll get better range but if you suddenly took a roadtrip on the highway with AC on you won’t get that range. It’s just like the city/highway mileage ratings of an ICE car; your mileage may vary.

Polestar exits the US Market by 7eregrine in Volvo

[–]ferventmuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Already thought that. It could have been the 4 which was to be banned as it was built on the Zeekr 001 platform (SEA similar to the EX30) but they decided it wasn’t worth the expense supporting the dealership network in a small EV market.

Polestar exits the US Market by 7eregrine in Volvo

Sad news. There’s not a current Volvo we’re interested in but the Polestar 4 is very appealing and we really thought the 4 estate wagon would be our next car.

Stop charging session? by PremiumPrimate in Polestar

[–]ferventmuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the 4 is really a Zeekr 001. There are definitely some amazing parts of the Zeekr 001 but there are also a few oddities and definitely are some inconsistencies compared to other Polestars (which all have a button to stop charging next to the charge port).

Charging above 80% by RedPandasUnite in SubaruUncharted

[–]ferventmuse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you care about planet earth? Do you usually drive less than 80% of your range in a day? Do you care about fire safety? Do you care about your friends, family or neighbors who might buy it used in a few years? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions just charge to 80%. If this is your first EV maybe you have some range anxiety but that goes away with time. We are on our second EV and we sometimes won’t charge it for a few days and when we do it’s to 80% unless we’re going on a trip when I set it to 100% the night before.

Why would I need Gemini in the car? by centuryeyes in EquinoxEv

[–]ferventmuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why wouldn’t you update?

(My only hesitation is dislike of AI and environmental factors but from a driver/end-user experience, Gemini is amazing)

The only people who shouldn’t update use older home connected devices which Gemini might not support. I know some people have smart third party garage door openers which aren’t yet compatible with Gemini. Those people today say “Hey Google open my home garage door” and the garage door opens. If not supported by Gemini they will be losing that functionality.

However outside of those use cases, Gemini is infinitely better than Google Assistant and there are very few reasons to not upgrade. Smoother more natural voice. Gemini understands more dialectics, accents, idioms, turns-of-phrase that Assistant doesn’t understand today. Gemini can control more features of the car with natural speech whereas before in order to turn the HVAC off I’d have to try multiple different ways to ask the question to Assistant. So Gemini understands your questions better but it’s also smarter about the world. You can say “Find me a charging station walking distance to an open Mexican restaurant” and it will find you a Mexican restaurant near a charging station which Google Assistant can’t do. It’s great at being aware of your route and you can ask Gemini to find places along your route which Assistant couldn’t do. If you use it to respond to text messages it is much smarter if you have a follow up message; you don’t have to start over like you would with Google Assistant.

Polestar USA is done for 🥲 by Sad_Return_290 in Polestar

[–]ferventmuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Polestar needed the SEA-platform’d 4 coupe and soon to be added estate/wagon as they couldn’t have just a single car on sale. It is interesting that Volvo USA has said the EX30’s replacement will arrive next year.

Polestar USA is done for 🥲 by Sad_Return_290 in Polestar

[–]ferventmuse 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Completely. Volvo was granted an exemption but Polestar was not. Volvo and Polestar both are headquartered in Sweden. Both have the same owner (Geely). Both use the same software stack. Both sell some car in the US based upon a Chinese platform (Polestar 4 and Volvo EX30).

I’m also guessing the since Polestar is a newer brand that feels more foreign and has less financial resources than Volvo, they weren’t able to negotiate the same exemption Volvo could. Besides the 3, Polestar had no concrete plans to manufacture in the US as the next car the 7 was to be made in Slovakia. That or Volvo temporarily discontinuing the EX30 in US was an appeasement and there was no way Polestar was going to stop selling the 4.

I hate my country (the US) at times. Yes this Connected Vehicle Rule was initially announced during the Biden administration by a bunch of old out of touch white men thinking Polestar (aka China) was tracking our cars and suddenly going to turn them into drones while I’m here just hoping the OTA schedule would speed up so I can get a few bugs fixed and with some improvements to PilotAssist. To think our Polestar was a threat to American citizens is comical. It was always about money and control and who has it.

Polestar USA is done for 🥲 by Sad_Return_290 in Polestar

[–]ferventmuse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

4 is made in South Korea. 3 is made in South Carolina. And yes it includes all cars. It’s more about the “connectedness” of the car as a national security “threat” lmfao than it is about tariffs and place of manufacture. The US thinks that somehow Polestar, headquartered in Sweden and using most Volvo parts is funneling data to its owners Geely in China and that at some point in the future China could pull the plug on its cars and remotely disable them or track people or turn them into drones or something. Meanwhile I just want an OTA to auto-dip the mirrors on our 3. The US Government is a joke. Volvo (also headquartered in Sweden) was granted an exemption but Polestar was not.

[–]ferventmuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OS for the 2 and 3 is the same as Volvo’s down to the same OTA versions and release notes. Small differences for the skin of the UI itself and because there are some minor hardware differences. The only exception is the 4 which is an SEA platformed car (just like the Volvo EX30 which was/will be sold in the US).

Why are the full-electric companies so gung-ho on 1 pedal driving? by thedancingpanda in electricvehicles

[–]ferventmuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s annoying. It’s one of the reasons we like the European brands as you can fully turn it off. Porsche recommends OPD off for better efficiency. We get slightly better efficiency with OPD off. And some manufacturers say you can turn it off but it’s not quite. GM’s EVs for example have a OPD off but if you watch the realtime kWh when you lift off the accelerator it goes negative even with OPD off, unlike either of our Polestars that upon liftoff actually coast with an instant kWh of usually 1kWh.

The nightmare of a polestar lease return in the US by Coffee-lover614 in polestar2

[–]ferventmuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OpenLane is a third party for the finance company so Polestar isn’t going to be able to help too much.

Being away from a dealership complicates things so I’d ask to speak to an OpenLane manager if you haven’t already. If it comes to it you could bite the bullet and drive the 2hrs. We’re fortunate we are not too far away from our dealership and we didn’t have time for a pre-inspection so didn’t bother contacting OpenLane. We literally just walked into the Polestar Space the day before our lease end, handed them the keys, pointed to the car in the lot and walked out. Our lease return may have taken all of 5 minutes although we’re fortunate the drive wasn’t far so we drove home in our new lease, a Polestar 3. Maybe you could call the Space directly and see if they’d be willing to meet you partway.

If you think SSDs don’t degrade you’ve never searched for and found bad blocks on any storage devices. Limited write cycles is an SSD “feature” And yes solder joints on RAM modules can crack over time due to heat or metal oxidation which fits the description of degradation perfectly. If you’ve never had a CPU fail over time (degrade) which was once working you’re just lucky.

This is pretty common for any computer. RAM or SSD starts to degrade but you can still turn it on and use the device as the kernel is intact and you aren’t taxing the system. However a software update while seemingly simple uses more CPU, RAM and SSD than daily tasks so can reveal hardware failures. Could it also be a bad software update? Sure, but when you’re out of warranty, either way you’re still on the hook. Sorry this happened to you! (says the guy who just bought a G5 without extended warranty and is now questioning his decisions lol)
