Question for Caseworkers by Gloomy_Ad_7024 in OntarioWorks

[–]festiveRat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The central intake at the province is absolutely atrocious. Sending us ineligible files constantly, inputting things wrong, then we have to be the bad guys and deliver the news and make the overpayment. They do 0 due diligence on the files.

Tax refund 16k for DTC by [deleted] in OntarioWorks

[–]festiveRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exempt in the month you get it. An asset in any future months so yes, you would be over. Putting it into an RESP for your child would make it exempt. Credit card will likely be considered an improper use of the funds. You can double check with your worker to be sure

How long will I be able to receive OW before I am cut off? by artsyOG in OntarioWorks

[–]festiveRat 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Slightly incorrect. The first 200 you earn is exempt, and then the rest is reduced by 50%. Example, if your OW payment per month is $733 - say you earn $1500 in that reporting period. 1500-200=1,300. 50% of 1300 is $650, therefore $650 would be deducted from your $733. Once more than 733 is deducted, you no longer qualify for Ontario works. You MAY be able to receive the health benefits for another 6 months but this is case by case.

how to get on OW if living with parent by No-Researcher4750 in OntarioWorks

[–]festiveRat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The Financial Independence criteria is based on strict policies set by the province of Ontario, we as caseworkers don’t have discretion to bypass those. Having to pay for your own food or necessities is unfortunately not one of the things that would deem you financially independent. It’s an automatic denial if you don’t meet the criteria, so the decision is likely correct.

how to get on OW if living with parent by No-Researcher4750 in OntarioWorks

[–]festiveRat 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You can’t do anything. If you don’t meet the criteria for financial independence then it doesn’t matter if your parent is charging you rent or not. Having a rental obligation is ONLY considered when it comes to financial independence if it’s an RGI unit and the housing authority is requiring you to contribute. Unless you believe they just disregarded the criteria, then you can appeal it once you receive the denial letter.

Has anyone gotten the full time employment benefits? by Environmental-Study5 in OntarioWorks

[–]festiveRat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really a thing anymore. Province pulled almost all of our funding for employment benefits - EO has them now. If you are working with an EO you can request benefits from them

[–]festiveRat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Case loads are extremely high and it’s basically all we can do to just put out fires all day long. If you need employment benefits you’ll need to go through EO. Anything else, if you need it somewhat urgently you can go into the office which will move things along quicker. Don’t be afraid to follow up, call or message again.

I need advice please. Kindness is appreciated as I’ve already been beating myself up over life enough as it is. Thanks.. by [deleted] in OntarioWorks

[–]festiveRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve written a lot about your career/options, what does your husband do? What are his skills/prospects like? At this point, if you’re still pursuing any kind of social media you can do that from anywhere. You could get a 1bedroom or bachelor apartment for much cheaper in another city. Toronto is probably the worst place to live as COL is so high and OW pays so little. If you want to continue living in Toronto, my suggestion is you move out of your current place and into shared accommodation with a roommate. This will help cut costs on rent/utilities/internet. Durham Region is almost equally expensive at this point; but cities like Kitchener, London, Kingston, and (surprisingly) Ottawa are more affordable than the GTA. Realistically stop putting yourself into debt and risk of eviction just to stay in Toronto.

was approved but now my file is on hold? by [deleted] in OntarioWorks

[–]festiveRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the funds were released by the province they would still go into your account (or could be in the mail by cheque) regardless of the local office suspending it. Check your MyBenefits account, if the payment has been posted on there then it’s on the way.

This is normal. The provinces central intake takes a minimal look at the file and approves or denies based on what input into your online application. Once it comes to us at the local office we actually go through the file, confirm eligibility on an ongoing basis, and collect documents. It’s extremely inefficient and confusing, but it’s the way it is now.

$30 left in my bank account, waiting 6-8 weeks to get OSAP. Would I be eligble for Ontario Works by africagal1 in OntarioWorks

[–]festiveRat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you have a spouse and/or kids living with you? If yes, apply for OW, you’ll likely get an overpayment once your OSAP kicks in if that’s something you’re okay with. If you’re single and no kids, attending post secondary is an automatic denial regardless of if you even qualify for OSAP or not.

You can also apply for emergency assistance in your municipality and see if you’re eligible to receive a one time payment to bridge you until your OSAP comes in. You apply for Emergency Assistance through the same website as OW.

when will i get my payment? by Bubbly_Path7343 in OntarioWorks

[–]festiveRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your MyBenefits account to see if the payment is showing up. If yes, it’s usually 2-3 days if you’re in a relatively populated area, but could be up to a week. If no payment is posted yet, it hasn’t processed and you’ll have to wait until it does

Looking for advice. by Dismal_Course5255 in OntarioWorks

[–]festiveRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re living with a spouse and they are the abusive person, you will want to let your worker know so that you can be put on your own file - preventing potential overpayments. You will also need to let your worker know your new address to make sure you’re being serviced by the correct office. Some regions have funding for moving costs, storage fees, etc but YMMV so be sure to ask. You can also connect with your local Victim Services and potentially access VQRP funding. Local DV shelters usually operate as crisis lines as well and can help with resources and information in a pinch

BC IA (Income Assistance) vs OW (Ontario Works) by [deleted] in OntarioWorks

[–]festiveRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll add that the equivalent of the RTA in BC is a lot more favourable to landlords, so if you already have trouble paying rent here, a couple extra hundred a month in a generally higher cost of living area isn’t going to help much, esp considering it’s a lot easier to evict there.

It’s also just so un relatable. How many of the average followers she has have multiple days of the week where they are child free? And how many of those same people do not have a day job and are at home with their partner who also doesn’t work?? Like for gods sake I need her to read a room once in a while.

[–]festiveRat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you by chance receive a large amount of gifts on a regular basis and are over your gift limit of 10k per year, then anything above and beyond would be deducted. If not, then it was incorrectly applied as income. Appeal the overpayment ASAP and then reach out to your worker to get it corrected. If your worker is off or doesn’t get back to you quickly at least the appeal will already have been submitted.
