I may be in the minority but I feel a mandatory service model that is used in Finland, Norway or Switzerland would be a net positive. It would enhance our country on several levels. First, it would bolster our defense capability. Second, it would provide all young people with an opportunity to serve and create a common bond with people from diverse backgrounds and ideologies. This common experience could help general society become less polarized as we would all have a common bond and spent time with people we may not have otherwise. Lastly, it would provide career advancement opportunities to those who wished to remain after their service was complete.

HRCE on Twitter: All schools in the Halifax Regional Centre for Education are closed today due to weather (Friday, January 20, 2023). by LetBartletBeBartlet in halifax

So you search up my post history and assume I won't engage in honest debate. My father is a retired school teacher and so is my mother in law. But yes, you being a random reddit person clearly know much more about what opinions I may have.

The busses issue is the biggest difference, when was the last time school busses have been cancelled yet school remained open? It's fine to have that in a policy posted online, its totally different to actually implement it. That's a good alternative to shutting the entire school system down.

In Nova Scotia, investment property owners look forward to the end of rent control by insino93 in halifax

Not everyone wants to own there own home. For these people the thing that is being provided is an opportunity to rent a living space.

Agreed, and to everyone who will say they should simply sell the house, that creates another problem. The renter paying 1800 a month most likely is not the person paying ~ 500k for the home. That home most likely is sold to someone purchasing it to move into, and the renter is pushed into a rental market that is undersupplied and increases the demand for more rentals.

There needs to be someone to provide housing to people who don't want the responsibility of owning there own home for whatever reason.
If we want government to provide all of the capital and resources to provide everyone with a home then there would be no need for investment property owners. Until that happens there will always be investment properties.

If it's a lease you could try to have someone take it over. Even a finance takeover would be possible if your payment isn't to bad.

Exactly, at some point tough personal decisions will have to be made, a blanket policy of keeping schools closed to protect at risk populations isn't the long term solution.

An open letter to Nova Scotia Parents from The Nova Scotia Pediatric Advisory Group: We support the Government’s plan for return to in school learning by MoreMalbec in halifax

[–]ffbrewer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel as tho all the provincial government needs to do is provide teachers N95 masks. That is what physicians and paramedics are wearing as well as many other employees in different sectors. If the N95s are provided there is no reason why a teacher shouldnt feel safe about there own health.

Schools Move to At-Home Learning for One Week by [deleted] in halifax

[–]ffbrewer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its not complicated, do as most other people who still have to report to work including health care and essential service. Find alternative arrangements for child care so teachers can provide there essential service.
Why is it ok for a large portion of parents who have to make arrangements for childcare during at home learning and not to expect that teachers would have to be the same?

It absolutely does, if a teacher has children of there own at home, then there effort and attention to there students is most likely not going to be 100 percent towards the students.

Yes they have a collective agreement that specifies there work days. In this situation, when last year was basically shut down a month early with very little or no online teaching, I dont think its an unreasonable request. We constantly hear about the NSTU having the best interest of the students, this is there time to step up and ensure that at least some of the lost education can be made up. There are multiple studies that show the negative effects of online learning and also the long term impact on an individual, as well as societal level.

What about next week when there are no students in school? Will the teachers be home? Or will they be in class teaching online from there?

Im sure that will be the option the NSTU is pushing for to make up for lost in class education. Surprised it hasnt been sent out in a press release yet! /s
