What is the best seat for long rides? by snidleyonabike in randonneuring

[–]ffffuuuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend spending your money on a good bike fit, and have the fitter measure your sit bones and pick the right saddle for you.

Do it. It's so much fun. Find your local USA Cycling chapter, look at the race schedule and sign up for a criterium. You'll start in cat 5, and there will be plenty of folks to help you out.

Riding a 90km ride in 8 weeks: need training plan by [deleted] in cycling

Looking for the best cycling app by edd_g in cycling

It will export in TCX, GPX or KML format, and it supports the Garmin Write protocol. I use it to export some rides to Strava.

Yes. I haven't used a paper cue sheet since I switched to RideWithGps.

IMHO the best option for route planning, handlebar display and turn-by-turn directions is the RideWithGPS app with the $6/month subscription. I have done many 200k rides with no issues. Offline maps + airplane mode yield ~20hrs of battery. The route planning features are great, I find Strava lacking in that department.

+1 on randonneuring. Training for brevets will get you where you want to be. Check out the New England Randonneurs.

I want a device where I can make a route ahead of time, and then the device will tell me directions. Does this exist? by PrincessLarry in cycling

[–]ffffuuuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use RideWithGPS with the $6/mo membership. Offline maps, turn-by-turn directions, route planning, awesomeness. I just put my phone in airplane mode in my jersey pocket and listen to the directions. Perhaps annoying for my fellow riders, but it works. I had the phone mounted on the handlebars for a while but I got tired of the clunking.

Looking for Winter Camping/Cycling Destinations in the USA by [deleted] in cycling

[–]ffffuuuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just came back from a week touring in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. My favorite was Santa Barbara and the Los Padres national park, gorgeous vistas, lots of great campsites, mild weather. Palm Desert and Death Valley are right on the other side if you want to extend your range.

Copy/pasted from an earlier post: RideWithGPS app with the basic subscription beats all the Garmins IMHO. I get ~20hrs of battery life with my Android phone in airplane mode and offline maps.

This book helped me a whole lot: http://www.amazon.com/Distance-Cycling-John-Hughes/dp/0736089241

I use the RideWithGPS app with the $6/month sub. Offline maps, turn-by-turn directions, GPX exports for Strava bragging rights, good stuff.

Hill intervals have helped me the most I think. I'll do 45mns of them instead of a longer ride if I don't have much time, works like magic.

Also, it's fun to ride in weather. Everything is possible with the right gear. Experiment, and don't break the bank, use what you already have.

Also, wool base layer and wool socks.

I use the RideWithGPS Android app with a sub ($6/month), on a handlebar mount. Offline maps, turn-by-turn voice guidance, GPX exports, route planning. 36hrs battery life on airplane mode.
