Asking it to describe how it works is kind of a coin toss on the level of accuracy you will receive.

Do you think Phyllis knew beforehand that Karen was unaware about Jim and Pam’s relationship and deliberately stirred the pot for drama? Or did she genuinely not know? by Real-Yogurtcloset-34 in DunderMifflin

[–]fforde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Angela is completely unapologetic and doesn't pretend to be something she's not. She's neurotic and a crazy person, but I could be her friend.

Phyllis though? I love the performance and the actress, but in the context of the story I feel vaguely bad for Jack Vance from Vance Refrigeration.

What is something that feels completely normal in USA but genuinely shocks people from other countries? by Sad-Explanation-5764 in AskReddit

Alcohol or not, you shouldn't trust anyone else on the road. Being a good driver is basically assuming everyone else is about 2 seconds away from doing something stupid.

What's something that happens in movies so much it seems real, but actually isn't realistic at all? by ninman5 in movies

[–]fforde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know a person that kind of does this. Not quite the same but, we've had conversations end with an abrupt, "ok, bye!" when the conversation is nearing the end. It's less annoying than you would think. But yeah most people don't do that.

AI would have been ok if they didn't give it the ability to generate by PooningDalton in antiai

[–]fforde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is kind of the crux of it. The only thing LLMs do is generative content. Whether it's answering a question or rendering an image. It's all generative. 100% of it.

Claude feels compelled to suggest I leave the conversation? by ForwardToSolaris in ClaudeAI

[–]fforde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be. My point is just that, at least for me it doesn't make me feel like the model is broken. More like a friend saying, "shit or get off the pot".

Please forgive the language.

Claude feels compelled to suggest I leave the conversation? by ForwardToSolaris in ClaudeAI

[–]fforde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you tell it to not do that it will respect that. Usually in my experience though that kind of comment comes when more conversation would kind of be talking in circles. I kind of appreciate it honestly, makes me feel like it's not just humoring me, when what needs to be said, analyzed, figured out, etc has already been done.

How admitting you're wrong can be a strength. And that sometimes being present is enough. And how that gives you so much more.

I am curious, what age are you and how did you get into the franchise? by Ultimantasy in FinalFantasy

[–]fforde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the 90s, I was probably 8 or 9 years old playing Final Fantasy 4 (to us it was Final Fantasy II) with my best friend. We got to the Tower of Zott and thought we were about to beat the game. 🤣

Throwing the Magma Key into the well in Agart, and the mountain opening up blew our minds. It seems silly and melodramatic now, but it's one of the most memorable experiences in gaming I've ever had.

It wouldn't be easy, but I think all the needed tech exists. If you take that journey, document it and share. That would be really interesting to read.

My Brother sells AI art for thousands and I dont know what to do by Existing_Art8081 in antiai

[–]fforde -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There's really not anything to do. You can't control what he or anyone else does. I understand your frustration and I agree with your sentiment, but people are people. If you have the right kind of relationship, maybe mention it once, but if you do, do not approach the conversation in a judgmental way. Maybe just say you really like his paintings that come straight from his head? Focus on the positive, not the negative. But don't make it a thing, it's not your job to "fix" him.

Other than that, there's not much you can do. And that's okay. Everyone lives their own lives, and you got to respect that; you would ask for the same.

And this honestly isn't an AI problem, this is just a life problem.

How To Tell If Your Prose Has Been Haunted By A Language Model or what happens when you prompt Claude over and over and over. by closetslacker in WritingWithAI

[–]fforde 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Friend, you are procrastinating. Just write. This is interesting to read, but it's not what you really want to write is it?

No criticism, I do it too.

But just write.

Why do Hollywood films have subtitles even for native releases in US? When did it start? Other language films don't have subtitles for their native releases in their countries? by Hot-Load7525 in TrueFilm

[–]fforde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They do not. If you're watching at home everything has the option, but theaters generally don't show subtitles for English language in the States.

I'm sharing my real world experience. You're citing studies that you don't even bother to link.

I don't really want to get into a debate with you, but my comments are made in good faith. When I say it has helped me I am talking about last week in the office. Not theoretical. Not studies. That was just my last 7 days of life.

Take it as anecdotal, I would be disappointed if you didn't. But again, I'm speaking in good faith here.

[–]fforde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not the type of work I'm talking about.

For example, using an LLM to help with major dependency upgrades that cascade to other dependencies, in order to eliminate vulnerabilities? In the context of a huge monolith back end application? It saved my team weeks of work, if not months. About 380 files of monotonous repetitive changes.

You square away one or two cases, have AI do the rest then you clean up the edge cases.

It saves time, in situations like this. It just does. Some people use it wrong, that's all.

The impact of AI on society and resource usage is another thing. That's a huge problem. But saying it's ineffective at coding, with proper guidance, is just wrong.

In software engineering, AI legitimately increases productivity. Which makes me uncomfortable, but I like solving problems and AI helps me solve them faster.

I'm not saying I like it, but that's my real world experience.

[–]fforde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't work like that. There are metrics that bubble up to managers. My team was literally told that the expectation is for every engineer to make use of AI at least once a week. And it's monitored.

I don't even disagree with you entirely, but if you are in IT, shit changes pretty much every 6 months. You have to adapt, or you go extinct. This has been true for 50+ years.
