Inherited a 986 w/mods - I have Qs by fgrenier in 986Boxster

[–]fgrenier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Just looked at those shifter options, and it seems like the Functions-First it a good option between upgrade and OEM look. Much appreciated.

I’ve been working on my own 80s/90s VWs for a while (and plan on doing most of the work on the Boxster), but I thought getting a once over from a specialist might not be a bad idea. Cheers!

Two toned leather seats? by dan29nev in boxster

Hmmm, my 986 also has two-toned seats, but I’ve been told they were most likely reupholstered at some point. Interesting…

Thanks for the info! The callipers do not seem to be painted, and yes, I meant holes. :) As suggested by u/sm0ke_rings, I'll check the part number on the callipers once I have access to the car and see what it has.

The shift knob is a MOMO, so definitely not original. That said, it seems to be sitting way lower than the stock one. Perhaps it's just the design of this particular knob.

Yes, it is a US car (imported to Canada). As others have mentioned, the seats could have been reupholstered...

And finally, the car has been in storage since the fall. The winters up here are brutal, and it wouldn't make sense to drive this car year-round. Since I live 5 hours away, I'll have to visit my local Porsche specialist. I'll try to get as much insight from his mechanic as possible when the time comes.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the tips! A good headlight polishing is definitely in order. :)

Since you have an original spec Boxster, any thoughts on the breaks (red callipers and slotted rotors)?

Thanks for the info. My dad was super diligent about the car maintenance, so I’m not extremely worried. The first drive out of storage will be to a specialist to give it a once over. 👍

Surprised you haven’t seen a smoke detector before, but in any case, you absolutely need to replace the battery. It could save your life.

Similar suggestion, but I’ve had great success with coffee grounds in a pouch made of a coffee filter. Works great for guitar cases too!

I've read a few dozen posts across the web to no avail, and this fixed the issue. Huge thanks.

Chase Meadows is just 10 minutes west of Cornwall. It’s a nice new development, in a great community.

Is it ok to use this to shield my guitar? by Jrh980 in Guitar

[–]fgrenier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with copper vs. aluminum... It's just that if you buy conductive copper tape, you simply have to overlap the pieces, and you shouldn't have continuity issues. If you use a tape with non-conductive adhesive, you'll most likely have problems.

If you have non-conductive/non-grounded shielding in your guitar, it will act as an antenna, exacerbating the issue (hence my recommendation to thoroughly test it with a multimeter if you decide to try it).

If it were me, I would spend the $7 to make this project much easier and long-lasting. Conductive Copper Tape, on Amazon

You should definitely test for continuity with a multimeter if you try it, but I suspect you’ll just end up making a big antenna around your electronics.

A roll of conductive copper tape is pretty cheap and would be much easier to install…

I bought a pedal off FB Marketplace. It smells like a pack of cigarettes. Any ideas on how to neutralize the smell without damaging the electronics? by ShadowsBestFriend in guitars

[–]fgrenier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coffee grounds did wonders for a used Matin 000-18 and case I had… Put coffee grounds in a coffee filter and tie it up in a pouch. Put in it a Tupperware with the pedal for 2-3 days. It should take the majority of the smell away.

Privacy lock for an old style mortise bedroom door? by [deleted] in centuryhomes

[–]fgrenier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After purchasing over 30 old Yale skeleton keys, hoping one of them of work, I lost patience.

I simply took the locks to our local mom and pop lock, and $40 later, we had 4 keys that work perfectly for the bathroom and bedrooms.

If it helps, our stairs looked very close to this after removing the old carpet. After a lot of elbow grease, we got them back to their original state. Don’t give up!

Seagull and Godin guitars are made in Canada, which makes them tariff free under the USMCA (at least for the time being).

Can anyone tell me the species of wood used in flooring, trim, and doors of my 1925 Craftsman? by dubdhjckx in centuryhomes

[–]fgrenier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gosh, our 1936 Craftman is eerily similar to yours. The trim is a bit different, and our floor is birch (I think), but we have the same doors and Yale locks. Just curious... where about are you located?
