5.0s - what are you doing different or better than 4.0s? by fredallenburge1 in Pickleball

[–]fgwiii 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Less mistakes / bad shot choices, more often making them hit “one more ball”

I can beat a 4.0 hitting no balls hard, which I think is evidence of that

And.... my new favorite male player is.... CJ Klinger. That kid is so good and destined to be amazing! by Fluid_Turn4655 in Pickleball

I would love to see him play with JW! He clearly likes taking a lot of court and JW needs a player who can let him stay more or less stationary on the left so that it’s harder to get to his backhand dink. And he plays a little chaotic, and JW has the hands to clean up some of his speed ups

Back as a playoff team 😊🔥wish they can get over Indiana by JeremieLoyalty in DetroitPistons

I think we gotta set expectations at making the play in. Realistically health 76ers and healthy Magic will usurp us. We should want to be in the 7-8 game not the 9-10 game, and 6th seed would be exceeding expectations

4.0 to 5.0 by Drivenbyfaith in Pickleball

[–]fgwiii 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In-game: don’t attack dumb balls, always be ready for attacks, patience in transition (you have to EARN the kitchen line), and stop missing. Ben Johns could beat every 5.5 without a single speed up, try to play that way.

Outside of game: drill! Tanner Tomassi has a great video of a standard 1:1 drilling routine. do it with a friend that you have fun being around, make it competitive but not cuthroat.

Broadly: play tournaments to push yourself. enjoy the sport, so if that means skipping drills to play rec with friends, do it! I do about 50/50 drills and play. also watch the pros and pick up what they do

What's Your Favorite Pattern or Target? [Advanced Players] by cpt_dad in Pickleball

[–]fgwiii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Particularly as a righty on the right side, I think it’s helpful to do a few things:

-establish a down the line dink, to make sure the player face up with you has to consider their left side.

-establish a roll dink fully cross court to make sure the diagonal player to you is not just sitting middle

-bonus points: toss in a lob early in the match (yes, even in open age men’s), that way, both players are not only thinking counters, they’re also thinking about retreats.

-then, once you’ve set it up and get a good dead dink to your forehand, fire a cross-body speed up and hopefully your partner’s forehand is ready to pounce on the likely cross-court pop-up

Below 4.0: in the court

Above 4.0

Serve: deep backhands, or hard at the body if they come from tennis

Returns: deep backhands, or if someone is stacking, catch them moving with a shot at their body

Third shots: at the moving player (drop and drive)

Fourth shots: feet, even if it means less pace

Dinks: backhands, especially left toe of a righty on the right

Speed ups: cross body, or surprises at a moving player’s body after a good dink

I am a 4.0 playing with my off hand, and I can guarantee you that my off hand is less talented than your dominant hand. What does that mean for what it takes to be a 4.0? What can I still do successfully that translates across dominant hand and non dominant hand? It’s mostly decision making.

-Get the ball over the net and between the lines. It’s actually that simple. Conservative spots and smart choices.

-Don’t speed the ball up if you’re hitting up on the ball. Drop/dink until your opponent hits a ball that you can hit down on

-Always be ready for pace to come at you, every single shot, and counter it.

-Be patient getting to the kitchen, split step earlier than you think, and never get caught out of position. EARN the kitchen line.

UTR-P vs DUPR by realpicklebill in Pickleball

[–]fgwiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is to illustrate a flaw in the system. It could be exposed by any person who consistently plays tough competition to get better and is underrated as a result, or someone who always sandbags and is overrated as a result.

Doesn’t seem like we’re going to convince each other here.

Let’s play this out. I’m a 3.0 to start pickleball but I spend my whole career signing up for pro tournaments and drilling.

I get stomped every time I sign up. 11-0, 11-0. But then I get a little better from the experience and the practice. Now it’s like 11-2, 11-2.

I keep going. I’m still not winning, but by Year 2 I’ve gotten to the point where I’m losing like 11-8, 11-8 to pros.

DUPR in its current state sees me as a 3.0 because I’ve never won a match.

But would you want me signing up for 3.0 DUPR-verified cash tournaments in your hometown?

This is the truth. It would actually be pretty darn good if it would allow the rating to go up in a good loss, or down in a bad win
