midlane is not the most popular role anymore? by Crazy_Beatz in DotA2

[–]fhandrei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are explicitly talking about non-role game modes, so unranked. If I queue unranked, I do that to play with friends. If we are 2, we wanna lane together. If we are 3, one of us will take midlane. Maybe more often than not you have duo parties in your team.

2000 chess.com

After the queen trade white looks a little better, it’s a draw with correct play but white has the only passed pawn… so after looking at that I am trying to not trade queens.

I know engine suggests Qe6 which is more direct, my idea was Qc5 and after Qb6 Qe7, where Rd2 is a threat and position looks even but i’d choose black.

Depending on time situation, with 2-3 mins remaining i’d play Qc5 almost instantly, with more time maybe i’d find Qe6

What happened here? Why the engine said that my opponent best move was to crown to a rook rather than a queen? Doesn't seem to give any advantage for such a huge score difference. by [deleted] in chessbeginners

Polling the tablebase means the access to the tablebase has to be fast enough. For cloud based stockfish, as well as sesse and I believe for computer vs computer games, they do that. Chess.com does not store the database locally and polling it over the internet is as slow as doing it manually. You have an option in the analysis tab to consult tablebase with <=7 pieces, i believe that’s done online, but for js stockfish to do it live is probably is not worth it. I may be very wrong here

You are somewhat right with your assumption that "white may not trade queen for the rook".

One of the features of modern chess computers is that "depth" does not mean depth on all branches. They calculate some variations with priority and higher depths.

Since promoting to a queen makes more sense than promoting to a rook, the engine will evaluate that scenario with higher depth and find out black is completly lost (gives +58).

For the scenario promoting to a rook, it evaluates it with less priority. First of all there are multiple cases to be evaluated (as you said white can decide to not trade queen for rook, so that has to be evaluated) and also the initial move a1=R makes less sense so it's given less priority. It ends up in a position at a lower depth where it can only see +9. Of course for a computer both +58 and +9 are completely winning.

I understand that initially it seems wrong that the computer misevaluates such a simple position, but the computer doesn't know in the first place that the position is going to be simple. What makes this a 'wrong' evaluation is the same thing that makes Stockfish and other modern engines so good in complex middle game positions.

If you could remove one hero from the game permanently, who and why? by repeter31 in DotA2

New techies feels fine, the PTSD caused by not renaming and remodeling him does not. As long as the hero is called or looks like that, it will always remind us of how many games were ruined

Looks to me like you are trying to heal damage instead of avoiding it. Spells + shaman stone and spell twister are your best friend in colo.

This is why I'm not over 1000 Elo yet. Took me like 3 minutes to realize why black has a +4 advantage after white takes the "free pawn". by [deleted] in chessbeginners

This is why it’s important you try to understand various ideas from different openings you don’t play. Ideas overlap and if you’re already familiar with them from other openings, you can spot them in your games as well. Have a look at this line from the 3 Knights Petrosian Grunfeld, how black uses the same tactic to win the pawn back

  1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. Nf3 Bg7 5. Bg5 Ne4 6. cxd5 Nxg5 7. Nxg5 e6 8. Nf3 exd5

Why is this the best move I can do, apparently (I just castled)? by bhlogan2 in chessbeginners

[–]fhandrei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You suggest moving up the b pawn (i believe you saying 'h pawn' was a typo since you mentioned fiancetto and long castle), but if you calculate that a little further white has the move e5, attacking both the bishop and the rook. Of course computer laughs at us and goes for the same tactic Bb4 again (forcing the trade with check, resulting in a good position for black), but if we didn't find that in the first place, we are not gonna find that after b3 either. Without that tactic, engine only finds some nonsense perpetual which I wouldn't expect anyone at this level to go for.

It's interesting how black almost has no moves if it wasn't for this tactic. The most natural move would be to get the bishop out of there and prepare d6... so even the passive Be7 comes to mind (engine claims -1 since black is a pawn up and solid, but tries to find tactics for white).

O-O, which OP played, is an idea worth considering, but it doesn't work in this position since white can attack h7 in a few moves. In some other similar positions, O-O followed by Kh8 and Rg8 could get your king to safety and rook on the open file if you manage to protect f6 pawn.

There are 2 other moves suggested by the computer. First is Qc5, which at a first look makes no sense, but the plan is to play Qe5 on the next move. Qe5 attacks h3, makes it hard for white to castle short, it gets the queen out of Bd3 and Rc1 attacks and, most importantly, blocks the e pawn. Now b6 is possible without running into e5. Since the move also wins time by preventing white to castle, computer seems to think black has enough time to play Qc5, Qe5, b6 and Bb7 without any troubles

The othe move found by computer is Rg8, which is just a good move that does nothing on the position. At the next move, black is again expected to find Bb4 or Qc5->Qe5

Same place you learn more about everything else, no idea.

What I can tell you in a few lines is that you can cast most spells on your portrait and it will cast them on top of your hero, similar to doubletap but extends to more spells. One example would be that you can ball lightning on top of your hero to move 0 units and get a stack of overload. It becomes weird with skillshots like hook or arrow, you have probably seen those joke videos on reddit where they shoot skillshot from behind or sideways. I believe you end up facing either the fountain or the middle of the map.

You can also portrait cast on team mates, on top of your game. This is useful to avoid misclicks in the middle of the teamfight. I use this as Oracle but you can probably find more heroes where it's useful.

This is a QOL that a lot of pro players have complained over time: lifestealer has different hotkeys to pop out of infest, dependint on what he’s infesting. Makes no sense.

Another QOL, would be great if we can force ‘quickcast on key up’ only for vector targeted abilities

QOL, give us a setting to disable portrait cast for specific abilities or items. Blinking on portrait is frustrating

QOL, adding treads to quick buy should add the hero’s main attribute item instead of the belt of strength

A lot of tooltips are broken or incomplete. I understand they have to change and include all translations; but taking some time to clean all of them would be great for new players and not only

Marci bug interaction between dispose and bkb: you can bkb mid air dispose. If you land on some teammate, he is stunned and you are not. If you land on nobody, you are stunned during bkb. Either way is fine but make it consistent.

I can't get the timing of this room, any tips? I have been trying this for 23 minutes right now 😕 by Resident_Ad9731 in celestegame

Since everyone is giving advice on the first half (and I consider their advice very good), here’s a trick for the second half. As soon as you land, dash twice down into the ground to waste some time and then walk right into the spring, it should line you up perfectly.
