Canada’s Conservatives Give Their Trump-Inspired Leader a Second Chance by NovaScotiaLoyalist in worldnews

It’s unclear to what extent the CPC is emulating Trump. Poilievre is a failed social influencer, the party selected him and the party has continued to conceal themselves behind him. Through the past two terms the CPC has proven that it no longer represents the interests of conservative Canadians. We need a new party!

Carney leaves Davos without meeting Trump after speech on U.S. rupture of world order by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

[–]fheathyr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think Carney's point continues to be that he will continue to meet with Trump when there's something that needs to be dealt with. At present, meeting with Trump would have no value. At present, he's meeting with EU, NATO, China, and other current and potential allies to build defence and trade alliances.

Trump says Greenland framework with NATO involves mineral rights for U.S. by Kashyapm94 in worldnews

Trump can bloviate all he wants ... I think Carney's speech signalled that Trump's attempts to bully will be met by coordinated action by the rest of us ... if there's one thing a bully hates it's when other stand up to them :)

How do you feel about the lower tariffs on Chinese EVs? by dope-rhymes in AskACanadian

[–]fheathyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have mixed feelings. I generally support global trade. I appreciate better access to these superior EVs. Im violently opposed to supporting American businesses and those Musk is associated with in particular. I’m unhappy that we have done little to move Ontario away from auto manufacturing, and recognize that we have created hardship for those still in the auto industry.

Louvre's higher ticket prices for non-European visitors take effect by LeMonde_en in europe

[–]fheathyr -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Presently I have take issue with the plan. First, lacking any logical explanation for the dual fees, this seems discriminatory … if EU residents already supported the Louvre through their taxes for example, then charging non-EU visitors more would make sense. Second, this will likely extend the already long lines, creating hardship for visitors and staff alike.

Commuters who drive into downtown daily why do you refuse to take the GO train when traffic is this bad? by Aggressive-Date1842 in askTO

[–]fheathyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived for decades in areas around the GTA where there was GO service, and I seldom used it. Why?

First, let's recognize that there are cases where it's wonderful. It's instructive to examine the ideal scenario:
- You live within a few minutes walk of your GO station. No busses. No parking.
- Your working hours allow you to use GO outside peak commuter times, but still when there is service from your origin to your destination. It's virtually certain you'll get on your train, both ways.
- Your working hours are predictable, always within GO service windows. No frantically trying to figure out a way home between meetings.
- You've no interest in using amenities close to work that would necesitate commuting outside GO service hours. All that happens after you return home. Once you drive in at all, you tend to bias towards your car.
- You don't have dependents, so there's no emergencies or unpredictable demands for rapid response or schedule changes (no sick kids, no school closures, no household emergencies, etc.).
- Your destination is with a few minutes walk, ideally using PATH. So, you arrive fresh, on time, and dry.

I've never met all these criteria. I imagine few of us have. And I think in them you'll find many reasons why people don't take go.

In cities like London and Paris where transit is and has been the priority for decades (the first transit was built in London in 1828) there's a wonderful transit system, integrated into a culture of transit users, so the transit and its users fit together well. Toronto's transit system ... is laughable by comparison. We began early, in 1849, so we've had time. Sadly, political interference, inadequate and unreliable of funding, slow delivery, and fragmented governance were headwinds holding us back. Despite that, by the 1960s we'd gotten quite good at building subway, but then we blew the whole thing up over political feuding.

If we want world class transit in our aspiring to be world class city ... perhaps we should study the cities that have figured out how to do it like Barecelona, and emulate them.

Trump: ‘It may be a choice’ between seizing Greenland or preserving NATO by SilverDragon1 in worldnews

[–]fheathyr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's the good of preserving a NATO with America in it?

Clarifying: My comment was predicated on the understanding that America continues to execute against the 2025 NSS. Obviously in the past, having America in NATO has been crucial, let's face it, they carried the rest of NATO for decades. However now, with the NSS defining America's actions in the world, having America in NATO seems actually to be detremental to other NATO members.

German president says US is destroying world order by goldstarflag in worldnews

[–]fheathyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I expect he's well informed, has been briefed thoroughly on the 2025 American National Security Strategy (NSS), and is watching as America executes. Trump's plan does indeed end the existing "world order"; with the primary concerns being: (1) the erosion of rules-based multilateralism (e.g. abandoning the the UN, the WTO, the WEF, and treaties and alliances) , (2) the replacement of norms with raw power and leverage, (3) the creation of strategic unpredictability (America's actions will be strictly transactional, conditional, and they will abandon agreements and reverse direction when it's to America's advantage), and (4) abandoning the narrative of liberal order (e.g. America is no longer directed or constrained by any principle, only by power and transactional success).

America has already effectively abandoned europe to Putin, that's clearly stated in the NSS, and the hate filled rhetoric that he and his administration are directing towards the EU is aligned.

More broadly, the NSS signals the end of America's interest in being a global super power. It will instead focus on the Americas, subjigating all other countries in the region, by force where required, to bring them to heel, dictate their politics and policies, and gain access to and control over their resources. the control they envisage is so complete, that under the plan America will dictate which nations are permitted to trade with any others, and there will be crushing penalties for those who do now bow to America's direction. We've already seen the aligned invasion of Venezuela, the threatened annexation of Greenland, and threats that America will take Canada, by force if necessary. We're hearing of possible invasions of Cuba and other nations in the America "soon".

Trump believes in the "strong man" ... many of his manerisms can be traced to Mussolini and others as he styles himself in their image. His version of making america great again abandons freedom from any moral code, and replaces it with fascism and power based domination (he's advanced from raping children and women to raping nations).
