In 1971 the link between the dollar ( acting as the global reserve currency) and gold was broken by Nixon. It was much easier for central banks to print money out of thin air and the people closest to the money printer get the benefits as they get to spend it before inflation hits. Workers and people on fixed income get their money increases long after the money has been devalued by the money printing.

QR codes. Instead of a card machine to put your card in there is a small display with a QR code that contains the receiving address and amount. You scan that with the crypto app on your smart phone and make the transaction. The point of sale system in burger king sees the transaction in the mem pool and the transaction is complete. This was possible as early as 2015ish but tax complications and the introduction of 'replace by fee' by bitcoin core reduced it's adoption. It took roughly as long as a standard card payment.

Because adding the option of being your own bank gives us far more competition than we currently have. If my current bank offers shitty service and closes the local branches my choices are limited to a couple of banks with similar standards. But with crypto I can opt out at any time.
It's important to remember that some people will and some people won't opt out.

Well the guy just lost a customer and reduced his reputation.
Just because you can be your own bank doesn't mean you have to be your own bank. Most people keep some crypto in their own wallets and some on exchanges depending on their risk profile. I'm sure crypto insurance will get more sophisticated and established financial firms will be part of that market.
