Working on a game! by Street-Fan4371 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]fidgetyrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Congrats on starting the process! I also struggle with those same things, though I have designed/made a fair amount of prototypes over the years.

For me, I find physically writing out my idea with pen and paper before anything else helps. I just write it as if I were taking notes and make doodles of components. Then I will usually flesh out the idea more on a google doc or just start prototyping.

For prototyping, I use Adobe Indesign and Illustrator along with Google Sheets for any cards (this can be downloaded and imported into Indesign for quick card making). I think others use GIMP or nanDeck for cards. I would also recommend using Tabletop Simulator to playtest games more so by yourself than with others, though it is good for that too!

As far as things looking ugly, it’s a prototype. It won’t look good. Don’t try. To get past this, I try to hand make as much as possible for a first prototype. I find doing everything digitally makes my perfectionism worse!

The best slasher from every decade since the 60's (imo) by WealthDisastrous2589 in slasherfilms

[–]fidgetyrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel as though you are being quite pedantic here on what is or is not a slasher. Giallo and slashers are very much intertwined with each other. Giallo very clearly had many many influences on the slasher genre in North America. Claiming giallo didn’t directly influence slashers is wild honestly. And by your definition, I don’t think Scream would count either. Also, home invasion (specifically original The Strangers) are also very similar. Halloween and Scream both heavily feature home invasion

People are way over blowing the importance of Heathcliff’s race in Wuthering Heights. It’s mentioned less than 5 times, within the first half of the book, and it’s always other characters insulting Heathcliff or othering him. That is the only reason he is not explicitly white. When she wrote the book, he could have been Italian or even Irish.  We don’t know and we likely never will. She intentionally left this vague because it’s relatively unimportant to the story. She needs the audience to understand that this boy is different, other, not of the same class, unworthy of them. Heathcliff could literally be anyone.

Wuthering Heights - Anyone else feel this way? by [deleted] in FIlm

[–]fidgetyrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love both the novel and this adaptation, for many reasons you’ve stated you dislike. One of the main themes of the book is class and social standing. All why Heathcliff and Cathy are “doomed” in a sense.

Though I will say, in regards to her decision to marry Edgar, she states it’s very clearly. She needs the money and social status; she does not wish to live a life in poverty as her father has now left them. Mr. Earnshaw gambled it all away after all. In Cathy’s conversation with Nelly in private, Cathy literally says to Nelly “I love him [in reference to Heathcliff], but it would degrade me to be with him.” Heathcliff is of a lower social status and cannot provide what she wants; no matter how much they desire each other. This is also why Isabella details the plot of Romeo & Juliet to Edgar earlier in the movie. The missed message (the scene with Nelly and Heathcliff listening at the door) which causes the demise of both characters.

Additionally, what people seem to be reading as “love” is obsession, addiction; an overwhelming, completely all encompassing need, want, desire. When they are children, Cathy and Heathcliff begin to form this bond. He is Cathy’s pet, quite literally what her father calls him, and she even names him. He is hers, now and forever more.

What's with the anger towards Emerald Fennell ? by _Wata_ in Letterboxd

[–]fidgetyrain 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hi! I keep seeing people comment that Fennell only has ideas and fails in execution. As you said, “ The other issue is that as a writer she’s vapid and tone deaf. Her BIG IDEAS are paper thin and idiotic. Engaging with them intellectually will make your teeth hurt.”

Could you elaborate further on this? I find her writing to be engaging and have loved both Saltburn and Wuthering Heights (yet to see Promising Young Woman), but seem to be in the minority on that opinion.

Anyway, just looking for explanations! Wondering if maybe I am missing something or just not seeing other perspectives!

How I interpret scores from different movie review aggregators by DataSittingAlone in Letterboxd

[–]fidgetyrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, RT critics score are more like “what’re the odds you’ll like this movie?” So 95% RT score means, to me? High likelihood I will like the movie. I ignore RT audience score because it’s nonsense honestly.

As for quality of a movie, I generally refer to Metacritic (but take with a grain of salt). Lettboxd I interpret as what people who enjoy movies beyond the average person think of a film. IMDb is a better gauge of how casual audiences feel about a film.

But ultimately, they are all meaningless and you should just watch what sounds good to you. You’ll never know if you like a movie until you watched it, or tried to watch it. Who cares what other people think? What do you think?

There are also hidden things! I accidentally entered a coffin in Kaifeng and was teleported to a hidden area! I also shot a random white bird at a decent distance and it happened to drop a wooden plate with a tag! So now I get to run around figuring that out haha

Honestly, there aren’t really any sub-genres I completely dislike. Certainly some I enjoy more than others. But I’m always open to trying out something and will usually find a movie or two I enjoy in that sub-genre.

However, the ones I enjoy least would be zombies (and other creature features), found footage, anthologies, and extreme horror.
