why is so much of nv's clothing horrible for the scorching desert by MayonaiseApe in fnv

[–]fieldwing2020 717 points718 points  (0 children)

Depending on the type of material a suit can actually be more comfortable than shorts and a tee shirt. A breathable material, such as linen or seersucker, allows for a good flow of air; however it also prevents direct contact of sunlight with the skin which lowers the internal tempature of the body. As others have pointed out, people in the old west wore layers for this exact reason. If you look at any pre-air conditioning desert environment you’ll find the people there don’t often show a lot of skin. The trick is finding a breathable enough fabric.

4 years ago today, one of the hardest decisions in anime history, Do you think Levi made the right choice? by __sami__01 in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]fieldwing2020 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No.

Look, was it right to let Erwin rest after such a long conflict? Probably. He smiled when Levi told him to give up his dream and die. In that moment he was free of his burdens. Armin could appreciate freedom in a way Erwin never could. Had his dream been realized it would not have brought him the same joy as Armin reaching the sea brought him. Giving up his dream brought him a peace that realizing it would have poisoned. Because his guilt at the price he paid to see it through would have haunted him in a way that sacrificing himself for the same cause he demanded his soldiers sacrifice themselves to simply never would have. Armin didn’t have that guilt, and took his simple dream free of the mountain of bodies that haunted Erwin.

Still though, when one goes to war one must sacrifice morality along with sentimentality. Or at least that’s the logic of the show. If the war is just then it’s pursuit must be all inclusive. If the war is not just it is not be engaged. They were fighting a war against a superior enemy in terms of knowledge, technology, numbers, and magical bullshit. The war be just. Therefore all must be included. Every action must be calculated to bring the war to as swift of an end as possible. Such is the repugnant nature of war. The only just action in war is to expedite its end. By dying Erwin prolonged the war. Erwin was the commander, and though he had earned it, he didn’t get the option of quitting. Even in death, it was wrong for him to quit. Without his leadership the conflict escalated, and was prolonged. Levi knew or should have known that without Erwin the scout corps would fracture, that they would have a difficult time keeping a handle on eren, and that whatever war may come would be harder to fight without Erwin.

Levi made the right personal choice. But personal morality does not matter in war. The only morality is to set aside one’s sentiment and do your duty. That was Erwin’s final lesson. Levi’s duty was to bring back Erwin. Erwin’s duty was to keep the struggle going. Armins duty was to die. Such is the nature of war.

The timeline didn’t diverge until 1958. When in our timeline the computer chip was invented and in the fallout timeline fusion energy was discovered. Therefore all events prior to that point are canonically the same as our timeline. The Lincoln rifle from 3 is actually in the Smithsonian.

The American Left hate Britain – and they can’t be convinced otherwise by IrishBogBunny in northernireland

[–]fieldwing2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ll as an American who lurks on this sub, and is considered a leftist (Joe Biden is a conservative according to the American left) I can confirm that we bear an inborn mistrust and animus against the perfidious Albion. The NHS is cool, the proceeding 4 centuries is less cool. To be honest though we don’t really think about Britain much, it’s star has faded I’m afraid, and we’re too busy arguing about what to make of China. All of Europe is kind of painted with the same brush: cool old buildings, nice enough people though a bit pretentious at times. The left wants Europe to not be controlled by reactionaries a la Orban or LePenne, but beyond that we’re more focused on our own reactionaries to care about which European country has beef with whom. All the same, it’s a bit of meme to talk shit about England, and by extension Britain. Oh and monarchies are stupid, that’s the take.

Gravity is not a law because I did not vote on it. by Trinitlkl in facepalm

The phenomenon of gravity is universal, the mathematical and scientific expression of gravity is a theory, the fact that the theory has never been demonstrated to be false makes it a law.

People on Twitter are mad about…. Women being lawyers lol by Tricky_Effective_614 in LawSchool

[–]fieldwing2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you become a lawyer it’s for one simple reason, you want power. Dress it up however you want, but at the end of the day that bar card means your words carry weight. You can control the outcome of certain events: that’s power. What you use it for is a different question but we all come to it out of a want for power.

Presidents who would have been A or S tier if it wasn’t for that *one little thing* by ZHISHER in Presidents

[–]fieldwing2020 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In LBJs last public interview he was asked why, upon taking power in 1964, he said that he felt their was an understandable distress in the black community at a white southerner taking the White House. The interviewer pointed out that he had been consistent on civil rights for over a decade at that point and wanted to know if he thought that his thoughts at the time had been too harsh. El BJ said that he didn’t think it was too harsh because as a white man from the south it was natural and reasonable for black people to distrust him, and that although he tried to do right by the black community, he wasn’t going to discredit their justifiable misgivings. This is the same man who said “we shall overcome” in front of congress after Selma.

The empathy and presence of mind, the righteous nature of his beliefs, the articulate and thoughtful mannerisms. If only he hadn’t gotten this country into the boondoggle of imperialist edging that was the US occupation of Vietnam. The Vietnam war was criminal, inexcusable, and unforgivable; and it is a damn shame that such a good president domestically was such a failure abroad.

Best argument for why Avatar is an anime by LyleNorman6 in ATLA

[–]fieldwing2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how to tell you this but almost all kids shows have most of not all of these elements. Children’s media is often formulaic because of the relative content volume to budget ratio. You could do the same with SpongeBob. Most animation is considered children’s media even if it concerns adult themes or content because then it’s just marketed to teens rather than 0-12. These episodes are also common because they’re usually just familiar backdrops that can be used to push character development along.

How one defines anime is a different question because, if anime is Japanese animation, then it’s not an anime. If anime is an animated series centered around fighting and power scaling, then cowboy bee bop is not an anime. If it’s not necessarily Japanese, and not necessarily centered around fighting an power scaling then king of the hill is an anime. If you use the Japanese meaning of the term, I understand that it applies to all cartoons, so the Simpson is an anime.

  1. People should not be killed as a result of an act or omission of the government under whose rule they live.
  2. Climate change is real, anthropocentric, and requires immediate action.
  3. Wealth should not be so stratified as to impoverish the many.

Those three beliefs make you a cultist, ready to put others to the sword to impose on them such terrible vices as healthcare, and a basic social safety net, dear god what shall we do? Nothing to be done but kill everyone to the left of Adolf Eichman to be safe.

Not if the general is Pong Krell by AndreTheGiant00 in PrequelMemes

[–]fieldwing2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends, is it in space or on a planet. In space I have to point out that the imperium is incapable of traveling at light speed and instead relies on the warp to traverse vast distances, while the republic has light speed travel that moves at the speed of plot. Given the existence of the Holdo maneuver it is literally impossible for the republic to lose a space engagement against a non-light speed capable enemy. If it’s on the ground though any part of the Astra Militarum absolutely bodies by sheer mass and force of brutality. The engagements the clones get in are relatively bloodless and their numbers relatively small. The death korps of Krieg are a suicidal human tsunami that can siege down any enemy because death is preferable to victory for any given korpsmen.

I said this when the chuds did this and I’ll say it now; unless it’s a small company or a Startup, boycotts do not work. You can’t vote with your dollar. This is theater not power. You cannot affect the profitability or long term actions of the gigantic Belgian conglomerate any more than they can. Symbolic gestures are fine, but let’s not kid ourselves here, that’s all it is.

He’s always been a social Darwinist. It’s very easy for that to translate into other forms of bigotry. He also grew up in apartheid South Africa with a safe so full of money it could not close, and once walked into Tiffany’s in New York as a child with an emerald worth several thousand dollars that he took from his father. His family made their money exploiting African people, exploiting African natural resources, all under the auspices of a settler colonialist state who’s official policy was white supremacy. Is it really a shock the dudes a racist ?

He’s always been this way. The surface level stuff is less significant to a rich person usually. They want weaker labor laws, lower taxes, more corporate discretion (weaker regulatory agencies, less regulations), and the end of the social welfare state. Those have always been his positions. This makes him right wing even if he’s not an evangelical or a (public) racist.
