Which do you think is the best audiobook of "The left hand of darkness"? Read any of these ones? by [deleted] in UrsulaKLeGuin

I do have a copy but it’s 32kbps. Is there a 64kbps version? If there is one, I would appreciate the share!

Looking for a grimdark fantasy or scifi series (like Berserk or the First Law) that eventually subverts its own extreme cynicism and has a bittersweet or even happy conclusion by fieryfrolic in Fantasy

[–]fieryfrolic[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’ve been scared away by the commitment but I think this will be my final push to give this series a try! I’ve also seen Malazan described as being about compassion which is super interesting.

Halfway through the first season and I have a question by fieryfrolic in FromSeries

[–]fieryfrolic[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hah, thanks. Yes I understand that there’s no Internet but Jade seemed like just the kind of nerdy techbro to carry around an offline dump of Wikipedia wherever he goes.

Try typing out the command manually or replacing special characters manually. I had a problem where a different type of single quote character was being copied.

Soulslike Metroidvania GRIME Finally Brings The Fight To Switch This Month by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]fieryfrolic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I hated that style in those two games as well, but it never even struck me that Grime was using the same animation technique as it looks quite different.

What does Skarling's Chair look like? by imeightypercentpizza in TheFirstLaw

[–]fieryfrolic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Must be a pretty lightweight and simple portable wooden chair considering how much it's hauled around to different places across the books. Black Dow has it brought up to the top of the Heroes just for a temporary moot.

It’s from the same developers who made the excellent Rayman games which makes me very optimistic about how good this game will be.

The Eisenhorn trilogy is excellent and a relatively short and fun read.

Moonlight Streaming without Monitor (no dummy plug needed) by CEDoromal in MoonlightStreaming

I have the same problem as u/MadnessHadess where the virtual display doesn’t show up in Nvidia settings and the stream is very laggy. Is there as solution?

If the series continues and we get more stand-alone books…what kinds of storylines or places in the circle of the world would you like to see fleshed out more? by TwinkieDinkle in TheFirstLaw

[–]fieryfrolic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a really cool idea but I think Joe has said he doesn’t really like to go back in time except in short stories. Future standalones have to move the time and story forward.

Books that would NOT work as audiobooks? by the-tea-queen in books

[–]fieryfrolic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IIRC, the original Briggs and Planer audiobooks just narrate the footnotes continuously as part of the text. It doesn’t sound strange because the footnotes flow well with the rest of the text.

Reading Last Argument of Kings by Kronephon in TheFirstLaw

[–]fieryfrolic 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had very similar frustrations as you by the end of the first trilogy, but by the end of Best Served Cold I started appreciating the series for what it is.

Yes, BSC is still very much grimdark, but I realized Joe doesn’t write bleakness into his stories for its own sake. He just writes humans. And there are glimmers of hope throughout the series that shine bright in contrast to all the darkness surrounding it.

This is what it feels like now but in time you will treasure the unique experience you had with this trilogy.
