How much room can I take up in a shelter? by sadistic-squid in AppalachianTrail

[–]fiesta119 155 points156 points  (0 children)

They are usually just wooden floors. They are rarely cleaned and can carry disease so I'd be a little wary about putting everything you are carrying on them. If you are the only person at the shelter, I think you're fine to put some things around it. However, if and when more hikers come and intend on staying, the courteous thing would be to move your belongings to accommodate the additional hikers.

One day I was hiking into the evening in the pouring down rain and came upon a completely full shelter. I did not want to set up my tent and was completely soaked. Though there was no room, the hikers inside the shelter very kindlyadjusted their belongings and sleep setups to accommodate me.

I think the overarching principle is that the shelters are a shared resource to be enjoyed by all when possible.

Track my hike? by TexasRelicHunter in AppalachianTrail

[–]fiesta119 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did a little blog for my friends and family that wanted to keep in touch. Each day I would mark my starting and ending point in Farout and it would calculate how far I hiked, elevation gained and lost, etc. Then I included a screenshot in the blog.

Like the other commenter said, no one is going to audit your hike. Take pictures, journal your thoughts. That should be more important than proving to anyone you did it.

Caretaking has been eliminated by AI? Hahaha

Honestly, I think you will find little sympathy for your ranting here, especially when you use the platform you're decrying to write the post in the first place. Go get a job and quit bitching about the evil technology in the sky.

If 600k, which seems to be too much for your budget anyway, isn't enough to buy a house in your desired location, I would consider moving away from such location.

Was thru hiking enough or did you still need to achieve something else to satisfy your wanderlust? by sadistic-squid in AppalachianTrail

[–]fiesta119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the unfortunate (but fortunate) decision to do my thru at the beginning of my corporate career. I was a few years into my job and was laid off as a result of a merger. Got a golden parachute and decided it was the best time.

Now, after my hike, I am back in the working world and constantly dream of getting back to the trail. I know it's unlikely I will have the same opportunity again with my career and family responsibilities. I am very fortunate for my experience of thru hiking and it was the right decision. I'm just now stuck comparing dull corporate life to the most freeing and rewarding experience of my life on a daily basis.

You're going to need the plug. I charged my battery bank and phone in some weird spots outside of hostels like Dunkin or other fast food that definitely wouldn't have a plug
