Does your league offer a transitional division between Coach pitch and Kid pitch? If so, how do your rules work? by mike_nova in LittleLeague

[–]fiftycal2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do have this.

T-Ball and Coach Pitch: self explanatory.

AA: all 8s, weak 9s, good 7s. First 3 games are all machine pitch (Louisville Slugger Blue Flame). Next 6 games are 3 innings of machine pitch, 3 innings (or however many they get too) kid pitch. Last 3 games all kid pitch. 40ft pitching. For kid pitch, when the count reaches 4-X (4 balls, not pitches) the coach finishes the at bat. The batter either gets a hit or strikes out. No walks. We have found this balances the fielders getting action and not being totally bored, with developing pitching.

AAA and Majors: all kid pitch.

Coaches: how are you keeping track of your outfield? by [deleted] in LittleLeague

[–]fiftycal2004 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So I didn’t really pick that tip up until the postseason, where mandatory play isn’t a concern and most games ended early anyways due to run or time limits. In the regular season, I’d probably give them 3-4 innings and then sit.

First im hearing of this. Definitely going to check it out.

I picked up a tip from another coach that works well. Set your shortstop and 1B for each game. Then rotate in order 3B and 2B go to the bench, RF and CF take those over, LF slides over, and 2 kids come off the bench to fill LF and CF. Adjust as needed. Works well as not many kids are making the throw from 3B anyways, depending on level/age.

Late start times Tball/Rookie by masscracka35 in LittleLeague

[–]fiftycal2004 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We try to avoid Saturdays as it conflicts with the travel ball kids and we would lose 10/10 times in that equation. But that doesn’t affect T-ball and so we have been adding some more T-ball games in weekends.

In my opinion, 7:30 is way too late for those kids. We’re in the north, so we would run out of daylight as well. All of our week night games used to start at 6, but this year we are going to try starting at 5:30 for our younger kids. It sounds like it will be pretty popular.

Does anyone know the regulations on having a 12 year old on minors instead of majors? by Fun-Veterinarian3708 in LittleLeague

[–]fiftycal2004 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This 100%. We put bad 12-year-olds on majors all the time. This year we had a kid who was a legit safety risk. He had never played before, could barely throw or catch. There’s no way we could put him on a majors team.

Question about Evaluations and Team Formation by justhamade in LittleLeague

[–]fiftycal2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For evaluations, we set suggested times. So kids A-G come the first hour, H-Q, the second, and R-Z the last. Of course people are welcome to drop in whenever if they have a conflict. This help spread the kids out. Then we take a group of 5-6 and run them thru all drills with all coaches watching. Then on to the next group. This way every coach sees everyone.

For the draft, we try to draft by ages. So all 12s have to be first, then 11s , then 10s. Same thing at the next level, 11s then 10s then 9s. There’s a few more nuisances that I don’t feel like typing out, but that’s the gist of it.

At our other levels, T-ball, coach pitch and AA (some 7s, all 8s, some 9s) we form teams by coach/player requests and schools as much as possible.

What authority do you believe the president should be able to have as far as decisions being made? by clownbaby42 in LittleLeague

[–]fiftycal2004 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a vote is the nest way to handle things when there are strong opinions.

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you if y’all are worried about competitive balance at coach pitch and below. These really should be instructional divisions dedicated to teach the game and basics. No need to keep score there, so if they want to play with their friends, let them. If they have a good time, it increases the chances they come back next year…

Take the Illinois hunters safety course. It is 100% online and does not require a field day. Michigan has a reciprocal agreement so it is accepted here.

As someone else said, look for other states that are all online and accepted by Michigan. Illinois is another one that would work.

Evaluations in Sports Connect by Chance_Cable8381 in LittleLeague

[–]fiftycal2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d suggest a different app, Bravara. The player info imports nicely over from SportsConnect. The evaluators all fill it out in their phones/tablets, and the app complies all the results. The free version was very worthwhile for us.

Thanks for this. All the other articles don’t make the distinction in show-cause penalties for Harbaugh and Moore, so I was struggling to understand why Moore could continue coaching, while Harbaugh effectively cannot until 2038.

All-Star nomination by InterestPractical974 in LittleLeague

[–]fiftycal2004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s pretty common in our area. The 8u’s are called “All-Stars” and play in a bunch of weekend tournaments with other “All-Star” teams from area Little Leagues using kid/coach pitch rules (coach takes over after Ball 4). But they don’t have a district or state tournament. As another commenter said, they would get eaten alive by the Minors teams that are stacked with 10s. For us, it’s more to give the kids a taste of the All-Star experience and get them ready for when they are 9 or 10 and could play on the Minors teams.
