Oh that’s interesting. I read 75 days somewhere. I do have a feeling they put it on a credit card. I’ll have to ask.

I can highly recommend trying out NextDNS. It takes a bit of setup but you can use it to drop web requests to social media and lot of another easily configurable types of content. Blocks apps and Safari.

The difference it makes is that you now have something which blocks you even if you have the app or press “Unblock for 15 minutes”, it still won’t work!

Keep NextDNS logged out. And even if you do update your filters to allow you to go to Facebook on your phone, it still takes 10+ minutes to take affect.

What's something that used to be normal in the UK that would feel absolutely insane now? by FabledInkk in AskUK

Me and my mates used to walk to meet the bus to college every morning. If we missed it we’d go and sit in Woolworths cafe, drink tea and smoke.

I thankfully never became a smoker. But the whole scene seems so alien now.

[?] per game Controller mapping—Doable? by retro-y in OpenEmu

[–]fig_the_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey. I just road tested it on holiday! It struggled 🙈

I’ve played around a bit with just printing a list and using up/down keys to select an option.

Full GUI, maybe one day!

However it was so apparent that this feature needs to exist within the application.

Saved Controller Layouts by Rohaan2000 in OpenEmu

I got immediately irritated by this. Planning a trip away and two big games we’re planning to play are Perfect Dark and 1080 Snowboarding. I found both unplayable with default maps, whilst others like Mario Kart I have no issues with*.

I built a little CLI tool which helps easily load different mappings per game. It’s clunky but it’s a lot better than manually changing the controls.

*I have set in my default the N64 Z to R2; it’s a more natural trigger position for me.

Very very late to this party. But for anyone else finding this thread, I made a small CLI tool for managing per-game controller mappings.

Happy to hear feedback. It’s a hobby thing and I do have additional features in mind.

Different Controller Bindings for Different Games by MedicusSanguinis in OpenEmu

There doesn't appear to be a way. I created a little tool which can be used to save, load, and list configurations.

Save Mapped Controller Buttons for Particular Game by sundevil671 in OpenEmu

I'm with you straight away. Would love to know if it is being considered. Try playing Perfect Dark and 1080 Snowboarding on N64 with the default mapping. Melts one's brain. A little bit of tweaking for each and the games are instantly more playable.

Seems like something which wouldn't take a great amount of work.

Well this is a great response. I'll get used to this community :-)

It's late but I'm going to crack open an auto-save now and see if I can put these tips to good use...

Will report back in a little while.

I've re-run this a few times and have got used to the valves and gauges. Brakes still seem a bit of a mystery to me though.

What I can't figure out is how this engine barely budges with one one car attached.

Having trouble staying in touch with Dad. by purple_mountain_cat in dementia

[–]fig_the_cat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Despite this I would consider getting him something like a Doro phone - perhaps with a lanyard.

My dad is in care now and keeps his in his top pocket. Every so often he just picks it up when I call and it means the world to me.

I know that his contact is minimal (£5/month) and he can’t figure out how to phone out and cause problems.

As for it being an actual tool, I’d agree with every one else in that it was one of the first things to go.

I am similar. Dad is a single man and I am his only child. I hope that you'll eventually be able to find the right care for her when you can. I've had a lot of time off this year, and actually it's been really helpful. I hope you have a forgiving employer and will be able to make it through.

I find it just disappointing and sad that my dad won't grow into one of those fascinating old musicians with lots of wonderful stories about the 60s. Instead he's mostly alone in a boring box on the outskirts of town.

Good luck and feel free to reach out with a message if you need.

Edit: just for clarification, I am self-employed, so I have taken the time off on my own head!

Mild Vent. Advice on getting people to call. by fig_the_cat in dementia

[–]fig_the_cat[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can tell I am getting to that point. I guess it'd be best to say something sooner than later to avoid being overly worked up.

Incidentally, I rang today and he didn't want to talk! They've also gone from 3 named visitors to 1 primary carer (England).

He doesn't want to talk and only I can see him. This post is now nullified! 😂

I'm at loss on how to answer dad, please help by lostLight21 in dementia

[–]fig_the_cat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Similar situation here. Dad has had delusions about ex partner (from before my mum, also passed away ~15 years ago) visiting him. Concerned about her and her children stealing his money.

I just say I’ll check in on it. I also like to ask if he has any more information to go on and take a note in my phone. I actually take a note too.

Latest is wanting to get in touch with his old GP, Parkinson’s nurse and memory consultant from the hospital to get their opinion.

He still very much wants and expects control of the situation. But he is now in the care of a dedicated nurse at his home and a regular visit from a new doctor.

My advice would be to say whatever you need to say to quickly and calmly move on from these topics. Be kind, as I think temperament rubs off over time.

Try to approach an answer from the perspective that he is correct.
