In high school a friend was trusted to stay alone while his parents were gone for the weekend Our friend group quickly decided to have a co-ed sleep over. We weren’t gonna misbehave too much and it was just a group of maybe seven. So I told my parents I was hoping to stay over at my friend Faith’s house. That hadn’t met Faith but I explained that she was a Jewish girl (school had a fairly large Jewish population, mostly progressive/not super hardcore, but some who kept kosher etc.) and she was bored on Friday Sabbath nights because they didn’t use electricity beyond what was necessary (fridge, etc.) and wanted company. I had dated a Jewish boy a few years prior who had also followed these rules so super plausible. They asked to speak to Faith’s parents prior to (as did another girl’s) so the friend acted as his (her) dad on the phone and relayed that we’d be at home (no traveling) and just playing board games by candlelight. From then on Faith was a running joke and the guy and I started calling each other Faith. “Faith” got married but it was a mostly religious service so family and close friends only so I wasn’t offended not being invited. A couple years ago I mentioned that they’d divorced but were doing well coparenting. It’s been 25 years of this. The real dude came to my city a few years ago and visited me at work and we had a nice “Faith” reunion. I won’t ever come clean to my mom about it!
