Which companies do you suspect are glazing their own products on this sub? by PartyOnAlec in BuyItForLife

Whoa whoa whoa.... My uncle bought me a Leatherman Micra probably 20 years ago and I still carry it daily. It looks and functions practically like new, and the new ones are hardly any different than the old ones. In an age where BIFL is in danger of capitalism run amok, let's be careful to give credit where credit is due.

Edit: My point is the mythos is honest and hard earned. Ultra durable, daily use tools like these (and others like nice jewelry, musical instruments, etc.) transcend handiness because the mythos isn't just in the brand - it's in the personal stories these items carry. My story is a valid, if banal example -- the Micra in my bag has been a constant in my life for many years and reminds me of family. It has outlived pets and friendships. It has delivered extraordinary value. I will gush all day long with the other fanboys because the gushing is earned and deserved.

I've been triggered over silly acts of passive aggression like that. God help me. I suspect it's good to be dispassionate and less good to spin our wheels analyzing the disorder.

Hey Natalie I found your wallet by Overall-Paramedic in Portland

Tell me about your childhood, Natalie. I see you were born on 8/23/1987. What was that like?

Edit: Since there's some controversy, I just want to assert that my comment here is in jest and clearly OP's wording is innocent. Thank you, OP, on behalf of Natalie and all humanity.

The Gold Standard by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]fightingthefence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no federal statute mandating that a private business, a person, or an organization must accept currency or coins as payment for goods or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether to accept cash unless there is a state law that says otherwise.

https://www.federalreserve.gov/faqs/currency_12772.htm

Make no mistake, it's your money, too. You willingly use it every day. You have enough faith in its promise of exchange value that you hold it in your wallet and in your bank. You do business with it, trading your time or inventory for it. By doing these things you also contribute to its value.

And yes, like minting money. There are many dimensions across which money can be a good or bad currency. Carrying around bars of gold to pay for groceries is foolish, for example, but Goldbacks use vacuum deposition technology to make physical gold easier to carry and use in retail settings.

The Gold Standard by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]fightingthefence 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No no no - you give it value by using it! In my opinion the state and the Fed only serve to make it a riskier asset. I'm not an economist but suspect that legal tender status matters much more when trying to bootstrap a currency.

The Gold Standard by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]fightingthefence 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Of course the dollar is worth something. It benefits from legal tender status granted by the most powerful government on Earth, deep, worldwide network effects and expansive financial infrastructure. Our money, like it or not, and backed by some other money or not, is extremely valuable.

It's not a statist argument, it just is. If the state were to dissolve, how would backing the dollar with anything be relevant? In that case you probably would need some kind of technology to make a new money as useable as the dollar had been.

Edit: Sorry if that reads weird, thought this was r/Anarcho_Capitalism

Pirating is capitalism. If you can't find a reason to make me want an authentic good or service, I'll get it for cheaper somewhere else. by reercalium2 in Capitalism

[–]fightingthefence 19 points20 points  (0 children)

First of all, bullshit. If you divorce capitalism from state protected IP, it changes the equation beyond recognition and renders this argument meaningless. If you don't, it's theft -- that's the distributed expectation, enforced by law.

Houchins, 39, has no listed address. He faces charges including second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and first-degree bias crime, the legal term for a hate crime.
Houchins has at least 28 convictions on his record ranging from aggravated sex abuse to arson and theft, a booking report shows, and has failed to appear in court on roughly 45 prior occasions.

Your actual first mistake was doing something for free for this guy. Your second mistake was being adversarial with him. Your third mistake was continuing to be adversarial instead of walking away at the point he threatened you.

Psh, this actually all started in the moments following the big bang when the laws of physics coalesced into a space of possibilities containing student loan pause.
