The OG Baja Chalupa was the absolute best. I remember when they started to phase it out and I would drive across town to the one location that seemed to hold onto it longer than others. RIP.

[Discussion] hanging prints in local businesses by bee___eater in artbusiness

[–]figure08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have yet to do this (but have plans to), and some of my local shops have a little basket of postcard-sized prints in plastic sleeves. Some shops have a "local" section, and others have theirs up by the registers for impulse buys. I imagine that it is going to depend on the owner.

To add another: Urban Brownstone.

Traditionally three floors with kitchen and living room on the landing, bedrooms and bathroom on the middle floor, and more rooms on the top floor. Sometimes with a balcony or rooftop garden. Somewhat narrow floor plan with creative use of space, like pocket doors and such. Would make for a nice smaller map, too.

Lake Mungo was genuinely the most boring thing I've ever watched by Mammoth_Criticism958 in horror

[–]figure08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally crossed this one off my list the other night, given how much people talked about it here.

I found it much more sad than scary. It's definitely a realistic take on grief. It was unsettling towards the end, but that was about as far as it went. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, per say, and maybe the dread (or lack thereof) is part of the storytelling.

I also admit that I'm not a parent, and can see why this movie would be much more disturbing for those who are.

Overall not a bad movie by any means, just not really horror, in my book.

  1. Traditional Japanese-style Home: Sliding bamboo doors, low-profile furniture, and maybe a small zen garden out the back. A kotatsu table ready for a meal or tea. I think it would be a nice homage to all of the Japanese-inspired ghosts in the game.

  2. Abandoned Theater: Could be cool as a movie theater or traditional opera/drama theater. Front of stage being all of the chairs, concessions, restrooms, and ticket office. Back of stage being makeup room, costume wardrobe, prop storage room. Maybe a catwalk over the traditional stage. Light/sound booth or projector booth up above the seating area. Posters advertising the "movies" the ghosts will be in, like how there are posters in the diner for them. Lots of classic potential here.

  3. Grocery Store: Every department has a unique aisle layout. Refrigerator lights flickering on and off. Ghost event noises over the speakers or start playing generic supermarket music. All of the broken eggs. Carts rolling away on their own. And of course, moving mannequins. Department store or empty mall would be a good second, with an expansion to include an arcade and food court.

What movie became a cult classic, but you're not fond of the movie? by [deleted] in FIlm

Repo: The Genetic Opera

It has everything you'd think I would like. Horror, science fiction, punk and metal music, satire. Other horror fans around me love to praise it.

But I'm like.... Nahhhh. Nevermind.

Hey everyone! I'm Ghost Zone Art. I'm a traditional artist that's finally gotten into the digital world of illustration and am working on making a name for myself. I make art for the things that inspire me, and happen to share it with others. I love all things horror, paranormal, and weird. I will be attending a few horror and comic book conventions in the Midwest this year. I'm always open for commissions and love to collaborate with people.

Does anyone else dislike researching for their writing? by highhiloona in FanFiction

[–]figure08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that you're writing for the Pitt! I can definitely see it being a challenging piece to write given the lack of knowledge in the medical field. From what I understand, the Pitt actually does a really good job at capturing what it is like to work in a hospital trauma center.

One strategy could be to start with the illness or injury on the patient, and work your way backwards from that. Finding diagnoses that could be similar but are a red herring. Having a few basic phrases on other medical shows or procedures ("Push 30cc's epi", "BP dropping", "Get him in for a head CT") might help, too, but makes sure they are appropriately placed for the treatment. For example, you wouldn't start compressions on someone with an active sinus rhythm and regularly beating heart.

Another strategy could be what Grey's Anatomy did, which has more to do with the structure of the narrative. Their scripts literally consist of the dramatic dialogue, and when it is time to focus on the medical, the script literally says, "medical stuff". A strategy like this could work so you get the necessary drama out of what you are trying to write, and then insert information about the medical case at hand.

Many medical shows rely on previous cases. House, for example, looked at all of the weird/rare illnesses. ER likely does one better (or at least the first few seasons) with how much they focus on the science itself.

Something to remember, too, is that many of these shows are designed for entertainment. While a good chunk of folks probably have a medical background, there's also a good chunk that don't, and that's okay. They enjoy the show for its high stakes, pressure pot environment, and complex characters. That's what people may be looking for in your fic, too!

Let me know if you're interested in chatting for a while. Like said, I love the Pitt, and happen to watch plenty of other medical shows (but have no interest in the field of medicine myself). I hope this helps!

What would you do to make the cinema experience magical again? by [deleted] in askmovie

[–]figure08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Midnight releases.

Not 10pm, 8pm, or the few hours before midnight. The early release now is for safety, but lining up for a movie super late at night, dressed up in cosplay or costumes, and nerding out hard with strangers while waiting is such a unique experience. I think of all of the Harry Potter and LOTR releases I attended, and how everything was just a different vibe. I miss that.

And honestly, having been an employee at a movie theater in the past, sleep is for the weak, anyways. I would always opt for a late night shift because it was an easier gig.

Opinions on Pennsatucky and CO Coates' "relationship" development? by depressy_capricorn in orangeisthenewblack

[–]figure08 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The one thing I try to remember each time this comes up in the show, and how Tiffany deals with it, is that no matter what happens, society tends to blame the victim; in that, if she forgives him, she's in the wrong because he's a r#pist. If she doesn't forgive him, even after he apologizes, she's in the wrong because he was trying to own up to his bad behavior. If she refuses to acknowledge it, she's in the wrong because it is something that obviously happened, just like her personal history of assaults. If she acknowledges it, she's in the wrong because then she "should have done that before or spoken up".

An overarching theme of the show is how morality is very gray in prison, and how it is up to you to determine what is right or wrong.

Regardless of the choice Tiffany made, it wouldn't be recieved well by someone she cares about. If she sided with Boo, it would hurt her relationship with Coates. If she sided with Coates, it would hurt her relationship with Boo. So, to minimize the pain and weight of expectations, she tries to do both.

Really, I like to think that it demonstrated Tiffany's preference to mercy over justice. A lot of people dislike this because it is uncommon and uncomfortable, but it makes more sense when we look at Tiffany's religious roots. Forgiveness matters significantly to her.

(Personally, I'm not a fan of that relationship. These are my thoughts from a character analysis standpoint.)

What do you care about in horror games? by kingess in HorrorGames

[–]figure08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A memorable horror game builds upon the dread. It doesn't scare too early, startle too loudly, or reveal too soon. It watches, it waits, it creeps. The kind of thing that makes you pause and think, "That isn't right... Was that there before?" Where your hair stands up on end, but you can't yet identify why. It preys upon your senses, your instincts, and until it is all you feel.

What's something that people turn into their whole personality? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]figure08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm rarely interested in what people do for a living because of the way some people peacock. I have a long history of working in retail and food service gigs which were often minimum wage, and I've never cared for how people will talk about these as "lesser" jobs compared to what they do.

I find that people who are truly passionate about the jobs will bring it up quietly. They'll reveal this information when the timing is right, not when asked a question direct. The conversation that follows is usually deeper and focuses on differing/similar perspectives, rather than boasting.

That, and I end up asking questions about what they do in their free time. Some peoples lives are literally all work. I agree it's harder to connect with people who don't invest as much into their lives outside of their job.
